Duty Shift Times

Alpha Shift:Time: 0800-1600

Also known as the day watch, Alpha Shift is the primary shift for most senior officers. The ship's CO commands the bridge along with up to three other department heads. Alpha shift reports to their posts at 0745, 15 minutes before the shift begins in order to ensure a smooth changeover from Gamma Shift.

Beta Shift: Time: 1600-0000

Known as the swing watch, Beta Shift is the second shift in the day and begins in the late afternoon. The ship's XO commands the bridge and is usually accompanied by at least one other senior officer. Beta shift reports to their posts at 1545, 15 minutes before the shift begins in order to ensure a smooth changeover from Alpha Shift.

Gamma Shift:Time: 0000-0800

Commonly referred to as the night watch, Gamma Shift is the last shift in the rotation and begins at midnight. The bridge is commanded by either the Second Officer or a Department Head, and he/she is usually the only senior officer on the bridge. Gamma shift reports to their posts at 2345, 15 minutes before the shift begins in order to ensure a smooth changeover from Beta Shift.
