Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Meeting of minds

A Mission Post by Ensign Tasinder Solani & Lieutenant Commander Dyhei Liducca

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Chief Science Officer's Office

Timeline: MD3, 0800

Tas was up bright and early that morning, which surprised him after the amount of blood wine he and K'Otek had consumed the night before. He felt fresh and well rested as he zipped up his uniform. He made himself breakfast, Ktarian eggs on a bagel, and read back over his PADD again. He had taken plenty of notes on scientific mapping of the Gamma Quadrant before he came aboard so that he was as up to speed as he could realistically be.

As he sauntered down the hall, a wave of nervousness came across him. He had only ever worked for Dr Park. He had enjoyed a good working relationship with her over the last few years but it suddenly dawned on him that he didn't know what to expect from Lieutenant Liducca. He barely knew anything at all about her.

He considered drawing up her personnel file again as he waited but decided against it. He stepped into the Science Lab and took a quick glance around the room.

At the other end of the room stood an Andorian/Betelgeusian officer flanked by, and in conversation with an enlisted human male and a Rigelian male officer. The conversation ended when Dyhei, the hybrid female, smiled and gave the other officer a friendly wack on the shoulder with the PADD that she carried. Turning to go, her vision fell on the Ensign standing a few paces into the room, he was unfamiliar to her but there had been a few new arrivals. "Mornning Ensign, your either a lost medic or one of my new arrivals, either way welcome to the Science decks." She shot a sideways glance to the Scientists Mate, "Dec is he one of mine?"

"You've got three yet to report two Petty officers and an Ensign Solani, is that you son?" Came the response after the male enlisted made a quick check fact check.

"It is," Tas confirmed holding a hand out to greet his superior officer. "Ensign Tasinder Solani reporting for duty, Sir."

"Nice, very professional. Well done." Dyhei responded with a smile she hoped would put him a little at ease. "Well as we're both here I guess I'll give the tour of or part of this colossus. Interested?" She asked deciding that would be the best way to get a deal for the new officer.

"Of course, Sir." Tas replied. He hadn't had a chance to see much of the Elysium up until now and so a tour whilst meeting Liducca was welcome. He stepped out into the corridor with the Lieutenant and asked, "How long have you served aboard, Sir?"

"Nto that long as it happens. A month at most, so even I'm still getting used to where everything is and what the whole set up is capable of." She responded frankly as they stepped into the corridor, and she tried to work out what the best order was to do the tour in, before defaulting to stellar Cartography as her first port of call. "Thankfully people like Dec and a few other of the enlisted techs have been around for a while. Advice point Number One, be nice to Lab techs, they know where everything is."

Tas concurred with the senior officer as he looked around. He basked in the buzz that a Starship enjoys before departure, listening out to the sounds of crewman excitedly discussing their first mission, repair teams patching up last-minute refits to the minor systems, computer read outs of technical data. It was exactly the fresh start that Tas had wanted. After most of his life on Risa, then Bajor and then a space station, he had enjoyed very little of the advantages of warp technology; being able to explore and discover. He was pleased that the Elysium would give him the chance to do so.

As they came to Stellar Cartography, Tas inquired of Liducca, "If you don't mind my asking Sir, what is your own specialism?"

"Hey that's my line." DyheI stated before smiling and the hooking her thumb at the door. "This stuff, Stellar Cartography, and a little Astrometrics. Started out as a assistant technician on one of the old Steamrunner-Class worked my way up. There's just something about how things work and interact that I find captivatting." She enthused, her natural love and fascination bubbling to the surface, she strove to resigned it in a little by returning the question. "And yourself, what's your field of choice? What gets you?"

The young Risian drank in the new information and smiled politely. "I actually just did a stint in Astrometrics on DS3." he replied, glad to have something in common with his superior. "Though, it's more of a minor for me." he admitted. "Xenogeology is my forté. Stems from my work on Risa's climate control science. I find the make-up of planets and their geography fascinating."

"Interesting, from what I understand while the Gamma Quadrant has been charted, many of the planets and stellar bodies have not been studied in any great depth." Dyhei commented with genuine interest, her thrill of having something new to go at was evident, as was having someone in the department who would be well used during missions. Having thumbed the door control as they spoke she gestured inside. "Well as you can see, this is quite extensive, it occupies two decks worth of space and is three sixty and fully holographic display, rivals starbase setups so I'm told." She added with a beaming smile, allowing Solani an opportunity to have nosey it he wanted, while asking "How did you come about working with the Risian weather net? It's quite specialised I understand?"

"It certainly does," replied Tas, taking in the impressive structure. "My whole department on DS3 was half this size." he said. The room was impressive and Tas was quick to take note of geological and ecological data being displayed on information panels to one side of the holographic planetoids. He knew he was going to like it here.

"This data the system is processing can then be sent to other specialist labs on the ship?" he asked. He had spotted Geotech, hydraulic and topographic labs on the Elysium readouts and was keen to see what they could do. He may even have some ideas of how they could be utilised to their max but he would wait until he got to know Liducca first, some department heads were touchy about newbies suggesting changes immediately.

"Absolutely it can. To be honest it's something I've always tried to encourage, specialisms that share a common source of interest to share data,we get a better more complete picture that way." Dyhei admitted in responce to the question, she fervently believed in the free flow and free exchange of information. "There plenty of process by it'll in to facilitate that, but they can always be improved right?" At this point she realised she could bounce from one lab to the next, rambling as she did or find a lab that he'd interest for the man so she asked. "Have you read up on the ship at all, is there anything you'd like to see next?"

Like music to his ears, Solani jumped at the chance to broach the subject of the specialist labs. "Actually, I did clock that you had Geotech, hydro and topographic labs on Deck 45. I'll admit I've been itching to see them." he replied eagerly.

"Let's go and have a look then, there's a turbolift point on the corner." She responded positively, stepping back into the corridor and waiting for Tas to join her, as they walked she admitted. "I haven't actually been down there yet, for one as far as I was aware we've had no specialists in those fields up until now, for two I'm still learning the facilities at my disposal having only bean aboard just over a month."

Tas smiled at his new superior officer. "I'm pleased to have given you the excuse to take a peek, Sir." he replied. They made their way down to the turbolift and stopped at Deck 45.

Most of Deck 45 was the Starfighter Wing's facilities so they needed to walk a while to get to the specialist labs.

"You know," Tas said as they made their way down, "the combined processing power of the specialised computers in the four labs down here would be quite something if they could collectively process data collected by Stellar Cartography."

"I suppose it would." Dyhei responded with a flicker of smile. "Do I detect a recent brainwave or something that been percolating since you looked up the specs?" She asked hoping to draw out whatever he was thinking of.

Tas paused. He considered whether or not he should mention anything, he had barely even seen the place yet. It had been his intention to wait and so he decided to hold off for now. He laughed it off warmly, "Oh just letting my imagination go a little. If it's all the same to you, Sir, I'll spend a few days getting to know the team and then bring a formal plan to you."

"Sounds like a sensible idea, I've been though that transition myself recently so I understand where your coming from." The hybrid officer agreed as they finally made there way to the section that housed the labs in question. "Maybe a look round will help the imagination, please, ease be my guest."

The Topographic Engineering lab was much bigger than Tas had been expecting. The middle displayed a 3D holoimaging table with what appeared to be a desert landscape created on top of it. Tas was impressed by the display but immediately starting making connections in his head about how it could be used.

"Lieutenant, I have a proposal for you...." he started.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Guess who's coming to dinner?

A Mission Post by Ensign Tasinder Solani & Lieutenant Commander Sthilg & Crewman Recruit K'Otek

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Solani's Quarters, Deck 15

Timeline: MD4, 1900

Tas was pleased that the CMO, Dr Sthilg, had agreed to dinner. It was especially challenging joining an established crew when there didn't seem to be many new crewmembers that he had come across so far. Hosting and making people feel welcome was a natural part of his Risian identity, Risa being a pleasure planet known for being particularly welcoming of offworlders.

He took the time to prepare a Klingon meal with his best know-how (and a bit of guidance from K'Otek). K'Otek didn't usually cook but for this, he made an exception. He had a natural curiosity about Sthilg's time in the KDF.

The gorn doctor had finished his shift down in medbay before heading to his dinner. Pressing the door alarm the gorn politely stated. " It's Sthilg."

Tas greeted the Doctor warmly and beckoned him inside. "Happy you can join us, Doctor. We were just viewing a recorded transmission of the Risian Hoverball final if you'd care to watch?"

" Not a fan of the sssport, but you can leave it on. I don't mind." The gorn replied politely.

Tas escorted the Gorn to the seating area while K'Otek joined them.

"So Doctor," the Klingon started eagerly. "Tasinder tells me you served in the KDF? I imagine the work was more thrilling than a federation ship. Less blood in the sickbay?" he asked with a sharp-toothed grin.

" We certainly had more injuries down in the sssickbay. Oh, the amount of timesss I had to kick the cook out so I could work. I misss the Klingtonk. Ssshe was a fine vesssle. " The gorn responded.

K'Otek laughed loudly. "The best measure of a Klingon crew is how busy the doctor is," he grinned once more. He poured three glasses of blood wine out and raised his goblet high. "To past victories and the stories yet to be told."

" kaplah." The gorn replied in his best Klingon. " To long gone friendsss. May they find peace in the great beyond."

The trio drank and put their goblets down and Tas beckoned them to the table. He had prepared a buffet of Klingon food so the Doctor could choose what he preferred to eat. He took a slice of Rokeg Blood Pie and asked the Gorn, "A move from KDF to Starfleet is quite a jump, Doctor. Was that a hard decision to make?"

" It'sss always hard sssaying goodbye, but i had no one to keep me in the empire. The lassst of my house had entered ssstovokor during the domnion war and my contract with the KDF had ended. " The gorn replied as he took a small selection of food. His voice showed a clear sign of sadness and loss.

"I'm sorry," Tas replied in a quiet voice. "I didn't mean to..."

" No need to apologize. They will alwaysss be with me along the long road of my life." The gorn said tapping his chest where his heart was located.

K'Otek, who had been hovering behind watching the exchange, stepped forward and slapped Sthilg across the Gorn's back. "Aha!" he cried. "You have a warrior's spirit, Doctor." The tall Klingon, winked at Tas, who was still slightly nervous about having induced such an emotional impact on his dinner guest. The young Risian smiled back and tried to shake off the feeling, focusing on his Risian need to play the good host.

"I find Starfleet daunting for those who have served elsewhere first," Tas continued. "I came from a civillian background, myself. You didn't get the diversity of culture and experience that Starfleet officers, even on as diverse a world as Risa."

" I'm a doctor. Not much difference in my line of work. People always need putting back together and life needsss to be brought into the world." The gorn replied taking a sip from the blood wine.

"A universal constant, I'm sure," Tas agreed. "Agh," he moaned aloud, pausing to look at the holoviewer. "Looks like T'Matrec of Vulcan is set to win again this year."

K'Otek grinned, showing his sharp teeth once more. "Only this round. He'll be up against Cetheril'sh th'Ronam of Andoria next. She was trained on Kronos. Much deadlier variant of Hoverball, isn't that right Doctor?"

" Indeed." The gorn replied as they watched the game. " The amount of times I had to patch up the family or Jinalli stand as a testament to that."

The trio sat on the lougne chairs, wriggling gagh on their plates, for a few moments watching the game, enjoying the sight of the impressive T'Matrec run rings around his opposition in the arena. The game was fairly one-sided but provided sufficient light entertainment and conversation for them them as they ate.

Suddenly, Tas' eyes were met with an instant moment of complete darkness. He stood but by the time he was on his feet, the lights were back on. He glanced at the holoviewer but it showed nothing but static.

K'Otek tapped at a panel on the wall, "The data link is gone. The whole game lost. Damn weak Starfleet engineering!" he cursed.

The gorn tapped his wrist computer. It was still working so it must have been the computer. He was about to say something when it did bleep with an alert. " Sssorry gentleman, but they need me down in sssickbay. Thank you for the food. We shall have to do this again. " He said politely as he stood up.

After the Doctor had left, Tas looked over the computer panel that operated the holoviewer. Unsatisfied, he started to take it apart.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Flirting with Flowers

A Mission Post by Lieutenant JG Shiannah Shannas & 1st Lieutenant Michael Andrews

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Arboretum

Timeline: 1900 hours

Corporal Don Dulaney looked over the Arboretum. It was spectacular with multi hued plants and varying sizes of trees and bushes. The scents of lilac, lavender, honeysuckle and jasmine were the stronger ones... to him anyway. His head in the rainbow clouds, he didn't see her til it was too late. "Oh. I'm terribly sorry, Lieutenant. I wasn't paying attention " he said, dropping the flowers he'd picked earlier.

Shiannah looked up, lost in the reverie of her thoughts and memories, suddenly surprised to be surrounded by multi-hued blooms and petals tubling to the decking. She looked at the officer who'd bumped into her, a tall bloody towerings the word she thought, looking up at the tall Marine Officer whom she wasn't aquainted with though had seen in briefings.

"No problem, 1st Lieutenant" Shiannah replied, as ever a glass of wine in her hand. "Lt JG Shiannah Shannas, Intel section" she introduced herself.

Don looked a bit amused at her. "Lieutenant. I'm only a corporal. Andrews is the 1st luey. I'm just a lacky compared to him and the sarge" he said.

"I like it here... every ship should have an Aboretum" Shiannah mused as she looked around. "Makes it all so less... mundane"

Don looked around again but his eyes were drawn back to Shiannah. "I'd have to whole heartedly agree, ma'am. I could find a little peace and solace here myself " he smiled at her.

Shiannah winced inwardly at the 'ma'am' reference though, she knew, that the Corporal was only being polite as to her rank rather than her age... Or so she hoped. Her hazel eyes were drawn across the multi-deck deep Arboretum and the mixed personnel milling about the various area, cafes and other refreshment places.

"Peace, I have found, can be somewhat over-rated" Shiannah quiped as she paraphrased an old Cardassian saying she'd overheard on a few occasions.

"Maybe. Lieutenant, but with peace comes prosperity. I know war only brings prosperity to one side. To the victor go the spoils, I believe " he tried to smile at her. It was out of respect he referred to her as 'ma'am'. Age didn't matter to him.

"I was on Bajor during the occupation... Long story so I won't go into the gory details... The Cardassians 'won' and occupied the planet and system for many years yet, from what I saw and have learnt since, the 'spoils of war' whatever they were, it was not worth the cost" Shiannah said seriously with a sigh as her thoughts drifted back to those terrible and troubled years. Then, with a slightly strained smile, she tried to lighten the mood. "Would you accompany... How may I say it? A more 'experienced' lady for a drink?"

Don smiled at her. The Cardassian occupation of Bajor was a troubling time for everyone. He may have only been a corporal but even he could see the hurt in her eyes. He reached up and took her hand. "Only if you call me Don, Shiannah" he said then offered her his arm.

"Thanks... Don" though she patted his hand though didn't take his arm, hoping he wasn't offended though she wasn't looking for a relationship more than friends at the moment Life is too complicated enough at present... though when is is not? she thought as they walked together.

Shiannah walked across the Aboretum, marvelling at the display of flora on a functioning SF ship... more like a restive garden than a ship of the line. She wondered what her old Cardassian mentor would have thought of such a gaudy display? The aged Gul, wherever he was, would have no doubt laughed at the waste and would have constantly moaned about what he saw as SF unneeded frivolity.

She stepped towards a bar and ordered a white wine from the human barman and turned to Dulaney. "What do you fancy?" she asked politely.

She was quite fetching and he was enjoying her company. "I'll have a glass of cabernet, please and thank you " he responded with another eager smile.

Shiannah raised an eyebrow and returned his smile. "And there was me thinking all you military types were beer drinkers!" she said with mock surprise though she ordered the drink. "How are you finding it on the Elysium... For me it's a bit more relaxed than some of my previous postings" she added.

"This is actually only my second post. My first was on Camp Archer on Mars as a rifleman. Lots of action there. It's one of the main training centers in the Federation " he said then cleared his throat. "Thank you for the drink. Not all marines drink beer, Lieutenant" he said then handed her the flowers."I was going to put these by my bunk in the barracks but I think they'll be better off with you " he smiled, putting one in her hair, behind her ear

Shiannah nodded her head and smiled though she thought the young man was a bit presumptious Gods i'll be blushing in a minute she thought to herself as she sipped her drink again.

"I've been to Mars though, unfortunately not to Camp Archer" Shiannah mused, absentmindedly brushing her fingers through her long hair though making sure she did nor loosen the scented bloom behind her ear. "Actually, in my youth a few years ago... though I'd be pleased if you did not mention it... I climbed the southern fissures of Olympus Mons. Which, by the way, is not that difficult in the lighter Martian gravity. An old... friend of mine was an accomplished climber" Shiannah explained.

Don listened to Shiannah. "My lips are sealed, Lieutenant. I never went to Olympus Mons. Studied some metallurgy in Red Rock Canyon though "

"Now, if you like climbing, the rim of the Rhiasilvia crater on the asteroid Vesta is a real challenge... perhaps you'd care to on join me on the holodeck one day? I have holo programs saved of both Mars and Vista " Shiannah asked with an open invite.

"That would be an awesome day. I look forward to it, Shiannah. Good thing I'm not afraid of heights, right?" He grinned at her.

"With the asteroid's 5 hour rotation and... tricky gravity well, it can be something of an experience" Shiannah explained just as she heard her coms beep that she had an incoming message. She finished her drink and nodded to the Corporal. "Unfortunately, Don, it seems that work beckons... We do keep rather irregular hours in the Intel section" she said. "It was nice to meet you... Don and let me know when you're free for that 'date' in the holodeck and I'll book some deck time"

"Oh I will.Shiannah... i will. I look forward to it" he grinned. Hoping she'd offer a kiss.

Shiannah left the bar and, after a few paces, glanced over her shoulder to see if the young Corporal was still watching her... She smiled when she caught his eye and winked. Turning back she strode away towards the turbolifts.

Don was heart struck as she sauntered away then winked. All he could do was grin back and wink. His next adventure was going to be exciting.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Where we Stand

A Mission Post by Lieutenant Commander Matias Grronkil & Commander Liselle Qwyyn

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Main Engineering

Timeline: MD4 - 19h00

Liselle Qwyyn blew out a heavy sigh as she stepped off of the turbolift at deck 38. Her mind was afire with a thousand fluttering embers as she made her way into main Engineering. She wasn't entirely sure what she was doing; but she had reached a point where her building notions of second guessing herself had finally overwhelmed her self-doubt.

Standing in Engineering now, she held her PADD to her chest as she turned about, looking to catch a glimpse of him.

Matias was thinking of Liselle. Why was he so attracted to her? They seemed to have been going in circles trying to meet, but never had gotten around to it. But then, there she was. "Welcome to Main Engineering, Commander." he said.

"Lieutenant," she greeted him with a nod. "I -- um -- before you were -- there were these flight assessments? What I mean is that I wanted to show everyone -- I mean, I need to assess everyone for flying -- not the ship, but you know...the shuttles? Gods, of course you know the shuttles --" she took a deep breath, releasing it slowly. "Sorry," she said sheepishly. She hugged her PADD tightly to her. "I get like that sometimes when I'm nervous. What I was trying to say was -- is there maybe somewhere we can talk?"

The Commander saw she was nervous. He had made it a point according to the custom of his people never to look a superior in the eye, as that constituted a challenge. He wanted to put her at ease, as she was usually very confident. "Of course, Commander," he said. "Let's go to my office." He led the way. He also felt nervous, but tried not to let it show.

For her part, Liselle didn't understand his unwillingness to look directly at her. All the better that she had come down here in the first place. Her suspicions were obviously correct, and it was time to say something to him about them. "Lieutenant," she began slowly. She set her PADD down on his desk and turned back to look at him -- though still he avoided eye contact with her. "I want to tell you something, and it's not going to be easy for me to say."

"Please, go ahead," he said. He wasn't a telepath or empath like some races, but with his animal nature, he could read another's body language very well. It was often a matter of survival for his kind. He saw his habit somehow made her nervous. "Forgive me, Commander, it's bred into me never to look another, especially a superior, in the eye. Among us Grral, it is considered very rude unless we wish to challenge them. But please, go ahead." He leaned against the desk waiting.

"On Risa. During the away mission," she began, "you remember how I suggested that we pose as couples? Of course you remember that. What I mean is -- what I'm trying to say is -- I just wanted to apologize to you. I have a hard time reading people sometimes. Okay, all the time. Naturally, it's an extra challenge when it's with a brand new lifeform like yourself, and I got the sense that you were uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable. I hope you realize that it was just for the sake of the mission, and that I didn't mean to disrespect you or anything," she said. "I just don't want us to get off on the wrong foot in our professional relationship."

Matias looked down on the floor. "I understand," he said. "But it wasn't you I was uncomfortable with. It was me. It was reminding me of the mate I lost in death back on Grral. I miss her so, and it is why I left my home to start anew here in this galaxy and on this ship. I was trying to forget, but you remind me of her. It awakened feelings I had forgotten. I know you weren't trying to disrespect me." He looked up and at her for a brief second before looking away again. Tears were in his eyes. "It taught me that I have to face my feelings and not run away from them as I have been doing. It's the only way I can recover. Forgive me for as humans say, baring my soul to you. I know it was just an act, but it was becoming real to me, and I was afraid." He wiped his eyes on his sleeve.

He continued. "This won't get in the way of our professional relationship, however, not unless you want it to be."

Liselle blinked. She swallowed. Something was happening here, and she wasn't at all certain how she felt about it. She swallowed again. She needed to talk to someone, to help her understand what was happening, what she was feeling. She needed Dyhei or Phoenix. "I - I don't know what to say," she finally managed. "I actually mean that. I'm terrible at saying the right thing. Expect me to say the wrong thing any moment now." She was hugging the PADD so close to her now that she nearly thought it possible she might break it. What was he saying? What wasn't he saying? "I didn't mean to bring up painful memories. I seem to do that to people a lot lately. I ask too many questions. I want to ask you a thousand questions right now, to be honest. I find you absolutely fascinating. I've never met anyone like --" She stopped herself. She was going to mess this up, and she didn't want to. She looked away from him. "I should probably go."

"Sit down, please," said Matias, sitting down himself in a chair and opening his hand to another. "You are safe with me. I felt safe to confide in you about my feelings. He was trying to make her comfortable. "It appears we both have a lot to talk about, but I won't press you. I find you fascinating as well. And you're doing fine. I don't find you saying anything wrong." He couldn't have her go in that state. He hoped to get her composed. "If you want to go, you can, or stay if you prefer. Just take it slow, and you'll be all right."

She couldn't help but blush as she sat. Though Qwyyn desperately felt the need to fit in, and tried much too hard to do so most of the time, she just as easily found herself feeling uncomfortable, awkward even, whenever someone made an effort in that regard for her. She tucked a loose lock of hair behind one ear, and she looked up at him. "You haven't been in this galaxy very long, or even on this ship for that matter. I'm sure everything here seems new and exciting. Gods, I remember what it was like when I finally got off my homeworld," she said with a nostalgic sigh. "There are a lot of things you don't know about me -- things that in my people's experience often doesn't sit well with a lot of other species. More than that, I'm worried that you might be latching on to some of the first people you've met here. Which is not a problem. I mean, that's good. We all like you. I...like you. But...I don't know if I'm the person you think I am."

"That is what I would like to find out," said Matias. "I've been around too much in my galaxy and yours to rush into anything. I'd like to take it slow. I've been cautious myself, and I have been unsure whether I fit in around here. I would like to get to know you, and maybe you could get to know me in time. You should have seen how long it took for me to get to know my beloved Mrranno. People thought we would never get together. It's like this ancient Terran song I recently heard.

We've been traveling in circles

Sucn a long long time

Trying to say hello...

I'll meet you halfway

It's better than no way

we have find some way to get together..."

He didn't share the rest of that Partridge Family song, but went to the main point. "I'm willing to take my time as I'm sure you want to."

Qwyyn wore an ear to ear grin as she listened to him recite the lyrics. When he had finished she closed her eyes and nodded. "That was very sweet," she said genuinely. "I wish I had some gesture equally as touching to offer you. Actually, there is this --" she took her PADD from her chest and turned it around so that he could see its contents. "Flight assessments," she explained with a laugh. "The oldest damn excuse that flight control has in its book to start a conversation. I really did want to talk to you. I had to force myself to just get my butt down here and start talking. And I'm glad I did."

Matias saw it and laughed. "K'rrama zogath murrrr," he said, quoting a Grral proverb. "Let any event spark a renewal." as he translated. "I'm glad you did come so we could bring this out in the open. We have some things in common already. Some of my Engineering crew call me the big bad wolf. I hope to show you that I'm not." He grinned.

She shared the smile. "I promise to give you a chance to escape all of my preconceived notions," she agreed. "But whatever you may or may not know about the Trill, I want you to hold off on reading anything more. The Starfleet dossiers on my world are a little...clinical. Off-putting, to say the least. Promise me you'll let me explain what my people are all about."

"I will. And too getting to know me, when so little is known about the Grral, will be interesting. Getting to know each other, not just stories about each other is half the fun." He patted her hand as he said it.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Senior Staff Dinner

A Mission Post by Commander Phoenix Lalor & Lieutenant Jaeih t’Noramei-McKinley & Commander Liselle Qwyyn & Commander Gary Taylor & Commander Aurelia Holmes & Lieutenant Commander Matias Grronkil & Lieutenant Commander Tate Sullivan Ph.D. & Lieutenant Commander Sthilg & Lieutenant Commander Dyhei Liducca & Lieutenant Dante Xithia & 1st Lieutenant Michael Andrews

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Deck 4, Captain's Formal Dining Room

Timeline: MD5 20H00

Phoenix had needed to do this now. She needed to get her senior staff in a place where they could all relax and get to know each other. With a number of new faces, mingling with the not so new and the old timers, of which, she realized was two, her and Qwynn, she needed to get them to at least acknowledge each other.

So she invited Senior staff only, to the newly refurbished Captain's Formal Dining room. She had, had it changed from Starfleet formal to a more relaxed atmosphere, with less harsh lighting, and the chairs around the large circular wooden table were comfortable. At one end was a number of low couches around low coffee tables for pre dinner conversation. It was there, she sat, a glass of wine in her hand as she waited for the senior staff to appear.

Gary had received the summons to come to the Captain's Formal Dining Room. He was curious as to the reason, so after checking to make sure he looked presentable, wiping away invisible dust and smoothing wrinkles out of his uniform and checking to make sure he didn't have anything stuck between his teeth, he headed for his destination. Arriving, he entered and saw Phoenix already there with a glass of something in her hand. "Is it that bad Captain that you're drinking already?" He gently joked with her.

She smiled. "No it's not because of anything bad." She waved him to have a seat. "I figured it was time to have dinner with the senior staff. Without partners. Just the senior staff." The coffee tables were covered in pre-dinner snacks and on a sideboard were a number of different beverages.

Gary took a seat in one of the chairs across from her. "A get to know you dinner?" He prompted then continued, "Makes sense to me. Should be enlightening." As he leaned forward and took a couple of cheese covered crackers. "Have to say the arrangement is most impressive and lends itself to a more relaxed get-together."

"Indeed." She grinned. "And it has been a while for some since they have relaxed."

He plopped a cracker into his mouth, and after chewing and swallowing, "Good." He smiled at her, "Like you?" He ventured as he ate the other cracker.

"Among others" She admitted. "I never expected to be granted the full command of this ship. hell, I never expected Sharr to do what he did, but I have a crew that depends on me, and I am glad to be able to say that the crew is handling the changes well and that this time, for the senior staff to chill out and such is needed."

"You deserve to be Captain, Phoenix. You've handled the stress and the responsibility of being Captain, remarkably well." He was about to say more when the dining room doors hissed open and Dr. Sthilg entered.

For the ships doctor being called to the captains was a rather pleasant change from his after shift paperwork. Making sure his uniform was clean he ducked below the doors top and stepped into the formal dining room. " Captain, lieutenant commander it's good to sssee you. " He said politely.

Turning in his chair, Gary greeted the CMO, "Hello Doctor." He answered pleasantly.

Phoenix smiled at the Doctor. "Please come in, sit down and relax Doctor."

The gorn smiled as politely as his reptilian face could allow before he slowly lowered himself into one of the chairs. After making sure it would hold him he reached for a few of the crackers. " Well, you'll be pleasssed to know the crew isss in a very good ssstate of health." He said as one of the crackers vanished into his mouth.

Matias was next to come in. He was dressed in his finest as he got the invitation to the Formal Dining Room. He saw the crackers and took one.

Liselle followed soon after. She had spent an inordinate amount of time in front of the mirror to ensure her hair was absolutely perfect before arriving. Normally an hour or two before duty shift was enough time to ensure that her presentation was as perfect as could be, but in a more intimate setting like this, she was extra careful in addressing every last detail of her appearance. She stood awkwardly by the door, unsure of where to put herself.

"Those crackers are good Mr. Matias," Gary told the CEO then saw Liselle enter and stand by the door. "Liselle! Come on over here and join the crowd." He said to the Chief Flight Control Officer. "You have to try these crackers."

She smiled, despite herself, blushing with embarrassment and appreciation. You're a lucky girl, Lia, she thought. She walked over to the table and took a handful of crackers into one hand, though she didn't eat. Instead, Qwyyn turned to Phoenix. "Everything looks just lovely, Captain."

Lia entered and stood looking at everyone in their dress uniforms, she wasn't in her dress uniform. "Sorry Captain, I don't yet have a dress uniform. I'll retire from this official dinner and resume my duties on the bridge". She was dressed in a long blue dress with a white bolero jacket and black court shoes, her com badge was placed on the jacket collar. She smiled at the assembled senior staff and made to leave, her embarrassment clear for all to see.

Gary was up and at her side in an instant. "You'll do no such thing! You're second officer and a member of the senior staff and you are staying. " He took her hand and led her to where the others were. "Try the crackers. They are fantastic!"

She looked between Gary and the Captain, "I don't think you have the rank to make that choice Commander, it's up to the Captain. And I will abide by her ruling". She stood at attention and awaited the Captain's answer.

Gary scowled at her, "Why are you being difficult Lia? You're a senior officer on this ship. Do you honestly think the Captain doesn't want you here?"

Lia shook her head, "I'm incorrectly dressed, and I'm only here by the Captain's request. If she feels I haven't made an effort, she is at liberty to ask me to leave. Despite the wish to remain, Gary, I have to be told by her. I'm not being difficult, only diplomatic".

"You are being difficult and stubborn Lia. There is no dress code. why can't you just accept this and have a good time?" Gary told her.

"Then why is everyone else in Dress Uniforms?" She asked, "I was under the impression when I entered that there WAS a dress code, that's why I said what I did". She now felt really stupid, why did Gary seem to enjoy doing this to her?

"You know what? I want you to stay but if you don't then I won't. It's as simple as that. I don't want you to feel like you're being singled out. I don't understand why you can't see that."

Lia went and sat down, she decided that an argument was not the thing to do. She would sort this out later, quietly between themselves.

Phoenix raised an eyebrow at the end of the 'discussion' Something was definitely going on here. But she forced her face to remain calm. "Well now that is settled, we are still awaiting a few members of our group. Once they arrive, we can get started," she said brightly.

As she waited she looked around and saw how well Liselle and the Wolf were getting on, oO Those two are going to really hit it off Oo she thought.

Wondering what all the fuss had been about and feeling slightly thankful it had descended into the way of the KDF of settling things the gorn grinned slightly as he slowly sipped on some water. Wiping his mouth with a napkin given his mouth wasn't built to work with humanoid glasses. " Hasss anyone heard any newsss from back in the Federation. I don't get to hear much down in the medbay." The reptile asked hoping to move people away from the recent outburst.

As Dyhei entered it was clear she'd managed the fashionably late thing without too much effort, which was more down to her not great organisation skills than any design or hers. But still a party was a party and even if her wild days were gone, she still liked the social part of these things, in keeping with this she'd gone for the almost cliché little black dress but kept it the right side of elegant. She entered in time to hear the big Gorns Federation events question, to which she volunteers this useless tact. "Well I here jumbo tube grubs are up in price, dry spells on some farms affected the size of some, and the Ferengi are being Ferengi about that. Apparently, it's serious, if you like tube grubs!" She added a smirk to lighten her fact

Michael showed up to Lalor's dinner. He was still sort of new here so considered it an honor to be invited. "Greetings everyone, " he said to those assembled.

"Ah Lieutenant, come and sit down with everyone," Phoenix waved him into the group.

Lia sat and munched on the crackers, she decided they were not bad and resolved to liberate some when the party was over. She glanced round as the room filled up, Gary didn't seem to care for her company.

Gary walked over to where Lia sat munching crackers. Coming up behind her, he reached around to grab a cracker as he sat down beside her. "See? these are good." He said starting a conversation. "You look very good by the way."

She looked up at him, "I try to look good, don't always get it right. Have I upset you lately? You seem a bit off, or are you still put out over the nebula thing?" She turned to face him as he sat down, "I thought we'd put our differences aside on the holodeck, or have I said or done something else I'm not aware of?" Lia looked at the floor and fiddled with a cracker, "I don't want to fight, but I don't want to have to walk on egg shells every time we meet. I think our little argument may have caught the Captain's eye, what do we tell her if she asks?" Looking back up, she smiled slightly. "If we intend to be a couple we need to trust one another, but we also need to support one another no matter what. And losing it over dress codes or any other misunderstanding isn't the way to go". She spoke quietly and directly. Lia knew Gary may take this all the wrong way but she had to put her side of it, "Why don't we start this evening again and this time we do so as a couple, and we both swallow our pride and support the other?" She smiled at Gary and hoped he understood.

Gary listened as Lia spoke. One thing he was and that was a good listener and he waited for her to finish before replying. "You got it right and no the nebula is water under the bridge." He looked at her and spoke with a quiet intensity. "I don't want to fight either and I definitely don't want to walk on egg shells." He looked in the Captain's direction and shrugged, "Why do we have to tell her anything? It is a private matter between us and leave it at that." He paused and grabbed another of her crackers. "I want us to be a couple and I've always have supported and trusted you." He added simply. "This wasn't about the dress code Lia,it was about me wanting you to stay and be here with me and me feeling as if you were fighting me for wanting you here." He smiled at her "As for starting the evening again and swallowing our pride, I say that is an excellent idea."

Smiling Lia leaned forward, "Oh one more thing Gary". She pointed at her bowl of crackers, "These are mine, go get your own crackers". She started to giggle and hugged the bowl closer, almost daring Gary to try and take another cracker. Lia was glad they sorted their problem out, now she could relax and enjoy the rest of the evening.

A fake pout came to his face, "Now Lia, part of being a couple is sharing." He said as he reached for the bowl to get a cracker. Her giggle sounding like music to his ears. Like Lia, he was glad they had weathered this first little storm. Now a relaxing and fun evening beckoned.

Passing the table of snacks and drinks, Dyhei picked up a drink something fruity and non-alcoholic, on her way across the room. She made a beeline for Liselle, giving a little wave and smile as she approached. "Not a bad place this isn't it, boss lady sure has an eye for the not your average that for sure. So how have you been Liselle?" She asked

Matias was munching on some crackers and then got a drink himself. He saw what Dyhei got and it smelled good, so he got it. He wondered if this was the extent of the dinner.

"Good evening, all" Dante greeted as he lumbered through the threshold of the room. Opting for something a comfortable, yet formal, Dante had chosen to wear a pair of black skinnies, a slim-fit gray shirt, a casual dinner jacket and a bow tie. He also wore a dark tan belt that matched his brogues. He hobbled over to the congregation and grabbed himself something alcoholic, "Lieutenant Dante Xithia, reporting and hungry" he smirked.

Jaeih entered silently, still fuming over the sudden departure of the now former chief of Operations which had shoved her back into her former role. She was going to speak with Phoenix about it at another time. She was dressed down in jeans and a tank top as she headed for a glass of wine.

Tate entered the Captain's dining room wearing a simple blue sundress and a pair of beige sandals with wedges. It wasn't very often she was out of uniform, but when she had the opportunity, she liked to be comfortable and to explore her feminine side. She had been somewhat of a tomboy growing up, but enjoyed embracing all sides of herself, whether that was her femininity or her capacity for empathy.

She smiled at the people who met her eye as she entered, just taking a moment to absorb the sights and sounds. She generally preferred one-on-one or smaller gatherings, but she recognized this would be a good opportunity to get to know everyone a little bit and to see how the group dynamic played out overall.

Sullivan relaxed in the more informal environment and took the opportunity to grab a raspberry lemonade.

Phoenix did a headcount and nodded with satisfaction. That was everyone. She stood and cleared her throat and held up a hand for silence. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you for coming." She waved a hand to the large table, circular in nature. "Please take a seat. It does not matter who you sit next to." So saying, Phoenix led the way to the table.

Grabbing Gary's hand, Lia headed for the table. "Come on slow poke, let's get settled before the rush". She giggled again like a school girl, "I think middle of the table should be the best place, what do you think?" She looked at Gary.

Gary's fingers wrapped gently around Lia's hand as he felt a rush of emotion at the softness of her skin. Her giggle sounding so delightful, so refreshing. as she led him toward the table. "Sounds good to me." He answered in agreement.

Liselle sighed as she noticed the gesture.

Dante quietly made his way to the seat next to the head. The position would provide him with the best view of the others. This would mark the first time he'd been provided the opportunity to witness their team socialise outside of work. He was intrigued to see what he would learn.

Once everyone was seated, Phoenix glanced to the back of the room, and the large low rectangular table beside the back wall was slowly filling up with food by servers from the kitchen. "I figured that a smorgasbord would be an idea. I had the chef prepare a number of different dishes across all cultures represented here and even some that are not, like Klingon. I will admit that your culture Matias and mine took some doing, as yours is so far away, and mine rarely exports things. But you should find a variety of foods to try and enjoy. So help yourselves. There is also a selection of different beverages from Earth, Betazed, Vulcan and even a smuggled bottle of Huey wine from my home world... it's as about as potent as Romulan ale." she added to warn them about the golden beverage. "After we have eaten, I would request though your indulgences while I make some announcements." she grinned and then stood. "But that is for after we eat!"

Lia sat and thought about what to eat, this could be problematical. How could she check about tomatoes, she headed for one of the servers.

Gary rose and followed Lia. He was curious to see just what Phoenix had the servers prepare. He was especially curious to see if gagh and perhaps a bottle of Bloodwine had made it to the table.

Dante followed the pair eagerly, hoping some of his favourite Betazoid meals had managed to make their way into the captain's menu. His time on Betazed had led to him eating mostly Betazoid meals, and he'd left with a taste. He quickly spied a delicious looking side salad filled with Oskoid leaves, a Betazoid delicacy that made the consumer feel warm. He also witnessed a small bottle of Uttaberry wine.

As he grabbed what he wanted, he smiled appreciatively at the effort their Captain had put into the dinner.

Matias was glad to see some of his native foods. He also liked the look of the Klingon rokeg blood pie and got some as well. He got what he wanted and sat down at the table.

Arriving at the server, Lia pointed and asked. "Which ones don't have tomatoes in them?" The server waved his hand over most of the dishes, Lia helped herself to what looked like chicken. She then picked and prodded at various other dishes before returning to the table with quite a large meal, she looked for Gary he seemed to be down by the Klingon selection.

Gary was down at the Klingon section. He had grabbed a bottle of Bloodwine and after mulling over whether to get some gagh or not he passed. He didn't want Lia smelling that on his breath so he got a slice of blood pie and made his way back up the table getting some what he hoped was roast beef and mashed potatoes and a roll before making his way back to where Lia was, he sat down.

She glanced at Gary's meal, "Oh I seem to have a date with a Klingon warrior, just don't think you're going to use your mating rituals on this little lady. My Broad Sword is more than a match for your Bat'leth, or even your Klingon sword". Lia smiled as she spoke, knowing Gary admired Klingon rituals and weaponry. ''

"Who me?" Gary replied teasingly. Leaning toward Lia he whispered, "I wouldn't think of such. The only mating rituals I'll use on you are the ones for a proper lady such as yourself. Besides my Bat'leth is being cleaned."

There was an empty space beside Matias. He also had some fried chicken on his plate and something they called cool slaw or something like that. He also had a burrito. He had what looked like a beer with it.

Having loaded up her plate with a little bit from each selection of cuisine, causing two thing quite a large portions size and as she would dis covered towards the end of her meal a congealed mass at the center. Dyhei looked for a place to sit and as it happened there was one by the wolfman chief engineer, the hybrid slid self down into the chair. " I had trouble deciding." She said to him with a smile. "Looks like earth cooking there, how are you finding it?"

-About an hour or so later -

After they had all eaten and relaxed around the table, Phoenix stood and waved an ensign into the room. The Ensign carried a tray with 6 small boxes on it. "Now for fun." She quipped. "If I can have everyone's attention please."

Gary turned in his chair, smiling at Lia as he did so he could see better to what Phoenix had planned next for the evenings activities.

Lia looked puzzled at the tray with the boxes, "Ah Gary, you got any idea just what she got planed?" Somehow Lia didn't think this was gonna be fun, but hey she was the Captain.

An infuriating smile was plastered on his face as he quickly changed the subject, "Sssshhhhhh!. Captain is going to talk and I don't want to miss what she has to say."

"Jeez, little miss goody two shoes", Lia fired back.

Phoenix looked at the two of them. "Do you two want us to wait?" She asked curiously.

"Sorry Captain, just curious. And trying to get a handle on what you had planed, no disrespect intended", Lia said openly.

"Patience grasshopper." Gary said softly.

Taking a breath, Phoenix took the tray and dismissed the ensign with a soft thanks. She placed the tray before her on the table and picked up a box. She held it in her right hand and looked out at the senior staff "Being captain of this ship, was never expected, but it is an honor I intend to uphold. And it has its advantages. I get to do cool stuff like this. Lieutenant Grronkil, please stand."

Matias stood up. He wondered what he had done.

"It is with great pleasure that I hereby promote you both to Lieutenant Commander." Phoenix held out the box. "We thank you for your tireless service and hope you know that it is appreciated."

Matias gasped. It was an unexpected pleasure. He bowed. "Thank you, my alpha, I will endeavor to live up to your confidence." He took the box and opened it. He fastened the pips to his collar.

Phoenix reached and picked up the next box. "So next on my list is, Lieutenant Sthilg, please stand."

The big gorn did so carefully standing up and moving his chair back.

"It is with great pleasure that I hereby promote you to Lieutenant Commander." Phoenix held out the box. "We thank you for your tireless service and hope you know that it is appreciated even if people avoid your sickbay." she added with a smile.

" Thank you, captain. Will have to make sssure i wear the correct pipsss tomorrow. " The gorn said as he took the black pip.

Phoenix picked up the next box. "Lieutenant Liducca please stand." she motioned to the Science Chief.

Looking in the Captain's direction, Dyhei rose slowly not quite sure what to expect at this point despite the last two promotions. "Yes ma'am."

"With great pleasure, I hereby grant you the rank of Lieutenant Commander." Phoenix smiled at the Science Officer.

Completely unsure of how to react, she stood there for a moment or two, resisted the urge to ask if this was a wind up, instead repeated what she assumed she was supposed to say. "Well thank you Commander, it's an honour I will endeavor to live up too." Before sitting down quickly, the little box clutched in hand. The

n with a smile, Phoenix let her gaze drift over the group as she picked up the next box. "Hmm next on my list is, Lieutenant Commander Holmes. Please stand Commander."

Standing up slowly Lia looked her Captain in the eye, "See now I knew something like this was gonna happen". She smiled at both Gary and the Captain.

With a half grin, the Erisian held out the box in her hand. "It is with great pleasure, that you are hereby promoted to full Commander."

Lia started to choke, "Say what?" She couldn't believe here ears, "Full Commander? Thank you Captain, I was half expecting a transfer to the Laundry department after the trouble I've caused". Lia sniffed as she held back tears, "I'll never doubt that your the Captain again, honest". She said, recounting her mistake on her very first day on board.

Gary leaned forward and gently squeezed her shoulder. A smile in his eyes as well as in his voice. "Congratulations Lia. It is richly deserved."

Turning round Lia now openly showed her affection for Gary by kissing him, "Thanks, I think you knew. Probably had something to do with it".

Gary returned the kiss. a radiant smile on his face,"I'll never tell."

Jaeih began the round of applause for the currently promoted.

Dyhei added her applause to the mix, genuinely pleased for all that had extra pips, the ones she knew well enough definitely deserved the thank you and the leg up that was provided.

Phoenix waited until the applause had stopped. "Now onto my next victi... i mean person." she smirked. "Lieutenant Commander Taylor. Please stand."

Gary stood slowly, squared his shoulders and faced Phoenix waiting for whatever came next.

"Not two months ago, this ship returned, without a captain, without a proper executive officer, lets be by the gods honest. You came on board to, lets be frank, give experience to the training wheels that I still to this day have. And I appreciate it. More than words. So with that in mind, it is my extreme pleasure to promote you to Full Commander." She held out the box with a smile. "You should have been full commander from the start. And you would have been, had the CO being different. But now you are the rank you should have been. Congratulations Commander Taylor."

Gary smiled warmly at Phoenix as she spoke of his arrival aboard the Elysium. "Thank you Captain. Thank you very much." He accepted the box. "Don't want a different CO." He replied honestly. "The honor is mine to serve you and this fine group of officers and crew. From where I stand you don't need those training wheels. You've graduated to riding without assistance. Thank you again for this honor. I hope I never give you reason to regret it."

Smiling Lia looked at Gary, "You deserve that, oh just one question though. As I got mine first, do I out rank you?" She burst out laughing after she said it but quickly checked herself, her admiration for Gary clear for all to see.

"I believe that I will never regret having you as my XO Commander." Phoenix replied. Then she reached for the last box. "I do hope everyone will allow me one last indulgence. This one has been, to my mind, a long time coming. One, I wanted Sharr to present, but as we know that was not possible. Lieutenant Commander Qwyyn, please stand."

Qwyyn rose to her feet, smoothing her uniform in front of her as she did so. She felt terribly exposed standing there in such a large social setting. One-on-one she felt more than comfortable with each of them (Matias perhaps being a bit of an exception at the moment) but it was a different feeling altogether when she faced them all at once. Strangely, she was reminded of the notion of facing a firing squad.

Phoenix knew it was strange to do this out of order but, her long time friendship with Liselle was the reason she was doing it this way. She held the box between herself and the Trill. "I spoke to Sharr, months ago. While we were stuck on that horrible planet, about crew I felt needed the promotion. Heaven knows, Magnolia had no idea about anyone or what they did, so he listened to me. But things happened which put this on hold. Lieutenant Commander Liselle Qwyyn, it is my great pleasure, believe me, I had to keep this from my blabber mouth sister so I could do this as a surprise, to promote you, to Full Commander Rank." Phoenix smiled at the Trill. "I believe the extra pip will look good on you Liselle."

Qwyyn eyes instantly reddened. The shock of Phoenix's words came so quickly that she had no opportunity to put up any kind of a fight against the emotions that overwhelmed her. She cupped her hands over her mouth and nose, her fingers trembling. Surely, she should have expected something like this after witnessing all of the other promotions, but it was still too much to hear those words spoken aloud.

More-so than the notion of getting the promotion to Commander was the sentiment behind it. Phoenix had always been a close friend, but she was also incredibly professional. She was excellent at finding and keeping that balance. It meant the world to her that Phoenix thought her deserving of such recognition, that Sharr had been a part of that conversation and that he had agreed. It would have been one of his last acts on her behalf as the old CO of the Elysium.

Even if she could have kept her composure through all of that, it meant more to her than she could express to hear Phoenix refer to her as a sister. If she had failed to hold back the tears, she sure as hell wasn't going to be able to stop what happened next. She grabbed Phoenix into a hug, pulling her tight against her.

Phoenix laughed and hugged her friend back tightly. "Congratulation" she said softly in the Trill's ear. "You earned it." Gently she pulled back and grinned at her.

Now it was Gary's turn to lead the applause as Liselle was promoted. As the applause died down he stood. "Officers of the Elysium, I would like you to join me in a toast to Phoenix Lalor our commanding officer and my friend. She may be a Commander in rank but make no doubt my friends she is a Captain through and through. She worried about being big enough to sit in the center seat. A worry totally unfounded. She is more than big enough for the seat with nerves of steel, and the heart of a lion. Here's to you Captain!"

Phoenix's smile was slightly abashed and she gave the team a nod. "Thank you commander"

Dyhei raised her glass, it felt right for this commanding officer. Which made for refreshing change. Although the whole event, of promotions and toasting felt a bit surreal, and a little to formal for her to be fully comfortable.

Michael raised his glass ."To the Commanders " he said.

"To all," said Matias. "All of you deserved it." He applauded with the rest.

Lia stood and raised her glass of fruit juice, "Love and light to both Captain and fellow crewmates, and to you Gary success and love". Then she sat back down, and let the rest join in.

Gary smiled at Lia as she offered her own toast. His mind drifting for a moment and wishing Caitlin could have seen this. She would have been so proud! But somehow he knew she saw it and was smiling happily down at him. He raised his glass, "To the Elysium." He offered simply.

Qwyyn's ears perked at the sentiment. She dried her eyes with careful dabs of her finger in the corners. She found her feet again and reached down for her glass. Her eyes took in each one of them in turn. She was quiet for so long that some probably expected her to stay there forever. She raised up her glass. "To our family."

Tate was content, if a bit wistful. Her belly was full with delicious food and drink and it would be clear to anyone observing this gathering the crew had warm feelings toward one another even as they were still getting to know each other in some cases. Still, she recognized a small group of them had been through things Sullivan didn't know about, making the Elysium as much a strange environment to her as it was a familiar one. She couldn't help but wonder if she would ever truly know the extent of what those familiar to her had been through.

That was amusing for another time, however.

As the toasts went around the room Phoenix had to smile with pleasure at the level of joy in the room. She hoped it lasted.

Before she could speak her own toast the deck pitched beneath them, the table tilted, chairs and people toppled over as the room shook and the lights went out. "What the?" she got out as she hit the deck with a muffled curse. The emergency lighting came on. Phoenix scrambled to her feet but the deck kept rocking. "Party time is over everyone! Get to your posts!"

"What the hell!" Gary shouted as he was pitched onto the floor.

Matias left first. This was his job, and he would find out why the power went out and how to restore it.

Scrabbling to keep her feet, Lia grabbed Gary's arm. "Ok lover boy, I think its time we vacated this get together and got to the bridge". Not even thinking about changing she headed out the door, "If the turbo lift is out, its gonna be a long climb down in this dress. Any ideas Commander?" She asked Gary.

Like everyone else, Tate was stunned when she was suddenly thrown to the floor, her second glass of lemonade now part of the carpet. She didn't know what the hell was going on, but it quickly became apparent the lifts were out and they would all need to climb to get to their respective destinations. In Tate's case, that was either the bridge or sickbay. Until she knew more, she figured her safest bet would be to head to the bridge. "I'll join you on the bridge, sir, ma'am," Tate offered it to Gary and Phoenix.

"Couldn't agree more Lia." Gary answered as they headed for the door. Gary hesitated only an instant before he replied. "Yes, we make your dress into a skirt. It will be less cumbersome and free your legs if we do have to climb."

Phoenix passed them and slapped a ... dagger of ornate design into Gary's hand. "Use this. I want it back though." And then she went to the nearest hatch to open it.

Gary opened his mouth to reply but Phoenix was already moving to the nearest hatch. He looked at Lia. "You ready for me to do this?"

Nodding her head, Lia agreed. "Yeah but not to short ok, I don't want to be flashing my underwear on the bridge". She smiled as she spoke, "And one more thing, remember I'm underneath this thing".

"Don't worry. I will definitely err on the side of modesty. Gary bent down to cut the dress, looking up at her before he did so. "Lia. how could I ever forget?" A smile crossing his face as he spoke.

Faking anger Lia looked down at Gary, "Commander Taylor, you are so dead once this emergency is over. And if your hand goes above my knee one more time, I'm gonna make you regret it". She wagged her finger as she spoke, "That's private up there you know, it's me stuff".

"Yes ma'am." He answered in mock reproach. "I know it's private Lia and I promise to remain a gentleman. Now may I please begin my alterations?"

Looking up Lia nodded, knowing if she watched she would blush uncontrollably.

Liselle's eyes lingered on Matias as she left the dining room. She had thought maybe she would finally speak to him for the first time since Risa, but she hadn't found the courage or the words. Another time.

Gary with dagger in hand, choose to make his cut a couple of inches above Lia's knee's. It would give her legs the freedom she needed to climb as well and perhaps more importantly ensure her modesty. Thankfully the dagger was sharp and he was able to make a smooth cut. A few moments later he was finished. "Not bad, not bad at all." He muttered. "A Taylor original." He looked up at Lia, "Okay Lia, I'm finished. What do you think?""

Lia looked at her new short dress, "I'm glad I wore tights, nobbly knees were never in fashion. Right lets get to the bridge". She headed for the hatch then stopped, "You want to lead, my underwear isn't for public display".

Gary made no comment other than a shake of his head and a smile that graced his lips. Moving past her he opened the hatch, "Onward and Downward." As he climbed in.

The now Commander Holmes followed behind, she glanced up and swallowed. oO Flippin' 'eck, that's a hell of a climb down Oo, she thought.

Gary was unaware of Lia's thoughts as he began the long climb to the bridge. "Don't look around." He cautioned Lia.

The tipping and roling of the ship had Dyhei sat on the floor just down from the table. By the time she'd pulled herself up, it seemed to have been decided the turbo lifts were out and it was a good old fashioned climb. "At the risk of sounding awkward, permission to head for Stellar Cartography, I think a bigger bank of sensors will be needed."

Dante sighed as he clumsily pulled himself up to his chair. The fall had added more pressure to his shin that was preferred causing the area to hum with pain, causing a groan upon hearing that their only option was to climb down to the Bridge.

"I'm going to need a hand getting to the shaft" he called out gruffly, an unmistakable hint of embarrassment poorly hidden. Given that he hadn't found any data prior to whatever had happened that would have him prepared, Dante would be useless until he reached the Bidges CIC.

Dyhei who was close by at the time, looked across seeing the intelligence officer in need of aid, stepped towards him on his injured side. "Consider it given, lets get the weight of that leg shall we, come on"

"Thank you, Lieutenant Commander" Dante replied as he eased his arm over Dyhei's shoulder, "I should really have used my cane shipside, but station life has made me complacant" he joked grumpily, "hopefully the replicator system is still operational"

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - What Now? Part 1

A Mission Post by Commander Phoenix Lalor & Avalon

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Various

Timeline: MD 5 2200- onwards

Previously on the Elysium...

Beta shift. With the senior staff, having a private dinner, at the express wishes of the Captain, the Beta shift bridge crew was manned by junior officers and assistant department heads.

Officer of the watch, currently in charge was assistant chief of Security, Lieutenant Stiegalle. It had been an uneventful period. Nothing but the detested nebular behind them, and space before them.

So uneventful was the duty shift that the crew were not really expecting anything major to happen.

So when the ship bucked suddenly like a horse not wanting to be ridden, the bridge crew were tossed from their chairs, thrown to the deck plating and the lights went out, plunging the bridge, and the entire ship, into darkness.

Solani blinked several times before realising his eyes were open but the lights were out. He had sharp pains across his right leg like a rod of metal had been pierced through his thigh. He felt the warmth of blood dripping down his head and the metallic taste in his mouth. The blinking lights of the consoles let him see enough to locate a chair, with which he proceeded to drag himself up off the deck. His leg was most definitely broken and no weight could be put onto it. He glanced around, squinting in the darkness.

"Everyone..." he started but his voice was weak and didn't work properly. "Everyone okay?" he tried again.

Alfonse was at the Security Officers console when the lights went out, "Aw crap!!" he shouted as he landed on his backside. "Hey everybody, sound off so I can tell if everyone's ok. I got sore arse but other than that I'm fine, why haven't the emergency lights come on?" He steadied himself against the console, the darkness robbing him of his balance. "Come on now guy's, sound off".

"Solani here," Tas called out. "Injured but functional. No access to sensors or science systems." he informed them, tapping his blank console.

Ken Waters groaned from where he lie on the floor next to the conn. His first thought was for Captain Lalor -- Phoenix. He grit his teeth and forced the thought to the back of his mind. Right now it was time to do his job. He could be a concerned lover later. Ken pulled himself back into his seat and tapped futily at his console. "Flight control is out," he announced with a sigh. "We're drifting."

He noted Solani stated he was injured, "Ensign Solani, how badly at you injured? SCPO Waters, see what you can do with what you have. My console is out and for some reason the emergency backup systems haven't kicked in". Feeling his way slowly he tried to locate his way towards Solani, but just kept bumping into things.

Tas considered admitting how much the pain was tearing through his leg but decided that the ship needed a Science Officer more than brutal honesty. He replied, downplaying it. "Just a few scrapes. Trying to see what I can do to get sensors back." Solani crawled under his console and took off a panel. He began dismantling some of the power cells, seeing if he could identify damaged components to bypass.

As the lights slowly came back on, Alphonse could now see just what state the bridge was in. "Jesus H Christ, what the hell happened?" This was bad, and how it happened was a complete mystery.

"I can't tell," Solani groaned, lifting himself back to his console having finished his tinkering. "Sensors are down but I have basic access to our last scans before we hit...whatever we hit. High energy readings, total exposure across the entire bow, heavy radiation in the forward sections...I'd say we hit it pretty head on." he reported.

[Bridge]

Emergency lighting came on slowly, as the emergency power filtered through.

Intelligence Ensign Aldek shook his head, rubbing at his high forehead where he'd bumped it during... whatever had happened to the Elysium. The tall Vulcan looked around the large Bridge of the Elysium as the emergency lighting strips came on giving the Bridge a half shadowed and eerie atmosphere. His long fingers tapped across the Intel Board though, as far as he could tell, the console was not functioning. Everyone was back on their feet and, as far as he could tell, no-one was seriously injured.

A flicker of light in the centre appeared, and Avalon appeared in transparency mode. "Ships systems are on emergency power." it announced.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Michael was returning to the barracks when the ship rocked. He was in a crouch then power went out. As emergency power came on, he stood and got his balance. =^= Andrews to Raynar. What the hell was that, Jim?=^=

Jim Raynar was double checking the barracks. With 1LT Andrews at the SSD, he took it upon himself to act as 2IC of the marines. He was just finishing with the ship rocked and main power went out. The darkness didn't last long, as emergency power kicked in. =^=Sgt Raynar to Bridge. Have we been hit?=^=

Hearing Raynar's voice perked Alfonse up, =^="Hey Marine, what the hell did you do down there? As far as I can tell, we didn't hit anything and NO we weren't hit. You got any casualties down there?"=^= He was trying to sound upbeat, truth to tell he was scared out of his wits.

[Officers Quarters, Deck 17]

After being thrown from his bed and finding he had a few bumps and bruises but nothing that appeared too serious, Jonathan got himself dressed and stumbled into the corridor as the emergency lighting did a poor job of lighting the deck. Moving cautiously he made his way to the diplomatic office and entered. He moved as quickly as possible considering the low light and keyed his code into the department's computer, seeing if there was any information that might explain what had just happened. Unfortunately the computer held no data in regards to their current situation just the usual run of the mill low level political talk. He was tempted to contact the Captain but held off. She was probably busy with much more pressing matters. He would contact her once he, knew more of what was going on.

=-=-=-=-=-=-

Shiannah shook herself awake, bleary eyed and threw the silk covers off her bed. She blinked in the half-light of the Emergency lighting strips overhead and along the base of the walls of her quarters. Tying her hair back she tapped coms from a wall mounted console though the whole thing seemed dead. As yet there were no warning klaxons or any sign that the ship was under attack at least not externally! she thought, shivering at the grim memories of the Elysium's previous voyage. "I don't need that much excitement" she muttered to herself and, once dressed she wondered what to do...

=-=-=-=-=-=-

Jim recognized Stiegalle' s voice from the cargo bats investigation. =^= Lieutenant Stiegalle. Things are shaken up down here but 0 casualties=^= he said then Andrews' comm came in. =^= Sir, not sure what's going on. Bridge says no hits or bogeys=^=

Michael thought briefly. Too many unknown variables right now. =^= Jim, muster the men and start teams on a deck search. I'll be on the bridge=^= he replied. Then headed for the J-tubes.

=-=-=-=-=-=-

Gary was making the long torturous trek to the bridge via the Jeffries tubes, Lia was behind him making the same trek. He had fallen into a routine of such putting one hand in front of the other and pushing with his legs from one rung to another. "How you doing Lia?" He shouted down to her as they slowly neared their destination.

Lia was breathing hard, but was still able to reply. "Oh just dandy Commander, I've lost a very important dress. I'm climbing down the side of a bloody mountain, and I feel like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. Other than that, it's been a wonderful evening. How are you doing?" She plodded on one rung at a time, as to what had happened that worried her somewhat.

Matias had taken off his uniform so he could more easily go down the Jeffries tubes to Engineering. He could always pick up a spare uniform there. He went like a wolf on the hunt.

=-=-=-=-=-=-

Despite the climb, Gary was able to smile at Lia's comment. "Now, now. I'll buy you another dress Lia. I promise since I was the one who destroyed your current one. As for climbing down the side of a mountain, you are doing fine. We're almost to the bridge. I'm sorry about your discomfort. I'll make it up to you." He answered even though he wasn't exactly sure how. He decided to keep her talking, keep her mind off the journey. "The evening wasn't a complete loss Lia.You had a nice meal and you got a richly deserved promotion." He pointed out.

Trying not to giggle, Lia stopped and took a breath. "Are you for real? Gary what planet are you on?" She failed to stop the giggles, "Ah crap, what the hell. Can we just get to where we're going, before the rest of my clothes suffer".

From further down the tubes, a voice called out. "Enough flirting you two, get down here we need to open this hatch!"

Phoenix and others were gathered by an exit hatch. It was blocked and all attempts to open it had failed.

Gary heard the shout and sighed, "Coming Captain." Then softer so only maybe Lia could hear, "No one has time for romance anymore." As he picked up his pace to open the exit hatch Phoenix and others were at.

"Romance is not on the menu right now, but I'm going back to liberate them there crackers", Lia said as she gave Gary a dig in the ribs.

"I heard that." Gary acknowledged with a smirk.

LTCMDR Matias Grronkil's Personal Log - Personal Log

The following is a personal log from LTCMDR Matias Grronkil.

Personal Log,

Lt. Commander Matias Grronkil

Chief Engineer

USS Elysium

My crew and I have been working hard to get essential operations up, the main power, the weaponry, and shields. So far, there has been some success. What is that term humans use? Yes, with duct tape and bubble gum, whatever they are, the systems are stuck together with them.

It's been hard, but we'll keep working until we get it right.

There has been a new development in my personal life. Liselle came and we spoke. It's possible a relationship will develop between us, if the fates decree it to be. She reminds me so of my lost mate that it pains me. She is so understanding. We have much to go over before we can develop anything of substance, but I know we can do it.

Both have been challenges greater than any I have faced since I left my home galaxy. I don't regret leaving, but sometimes I find myself staring in that direction. It has been an adjustment getting used to my new life here, but Liselle may be the key to it. If I don't scare her away.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Two of a Kind

A Mission Post by Lieutenant JG Jessinia Kopl-Johnson & Lieutenant Dante Xithia

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Academy Complex

Timeline: MD4 - 0745hrs

Although he had suggested meeting with the Elysium's previous Intel Chief the day before during his meeting with Shiannah, the mission had distracted the Lieutenant to the point that by the time he had returned to the CIC it was unreasonably late for him to summon the Jessinia. Instead, he'd decided he'd pop into the academy the following day, hoping she'd be available for a quick chat.

And here he was.

He limped his way through the thin stream of Academy personnel as they rushed to their offices, or to take part in pre-lecture conferences with their faculties. All around him, officers of various trades scuttled about, their noses buried deep within the PADDS. Dante felt severely out of his depth. Even after such little time, he found himself longing for the solitude his office, or the Bridge's CIC promised.

Reaching what he thought was his destination, the young El-Aurian scanned the screen of his PADD for confirmation before ringing the bell to the door that separated himself and the Elysiums previous Intel Chief.

She'd been carving up the curriculum, Ahh, the Academy.. she remembered it with little fondness. Most of its lessons, dangerously wrong. Not Her Class... Her door chimed and she did a sweep of the entry, disappointed to find an El-Aurian on the other side. Must be her "replacement..." She corrected her manors and tapped the entry code...

"Good morning, Junior Grade" Dante greeted politely as he entered the room, "I was told you would be the best person to acclimate me on the Intel situation prior to my arrival?"

In contrast he was a pup. younger and rather well put together. Hopefully he had the skill to match.. "Good morning Lt. I understand your taking the helm of the unit... Hopefully, we'll actually get to work together. get something accomplished that will actually do some good..."

"I assume most of our interaction will be on a consultancy basis, Junior Grade" Dante countered apologetically, "Your responsibilities are significantly different now that you've decided to teach. I'm sure I'll have plenty of excuses to drag you into the CIC though" he smirked.

He was good. Intel had a lot of people, she'd never worked with this Lt. He sidestepped the Real issue. "Well, I am a single mother now. Not that Anyone truly retires from this Line of Work..." "Think of me as the card up your sleeve you only pull because the Captain told you to." He, of course, would have access to her record. and would learn just what sort of agent she was. Time would tell If he could reconcile what he would learn with the given objective...

"Of course, I would never request your assistance that would jeopardize your family" Dante confirmed calmly, "Hence, I will only be requiring your assistance in a consultancy capacity only, leave the fieldwork to the agents with less to lose. In my book, retirement is retirement".

She highly doubted that. The universe was merciless. "I'll be able and ready." "Is there anything you might want me to include in the curriculum?"

"Truthfully, I've not had time to acclimate myself with the current curriculum, I've been busy getting up to speed with the Operational signs of the assignment. I will, however, have a look when I get some free time. I must admit, however, my duties have been very mundane since the Dominion War, I might need to enroll for a few field agent courses myself" he joked.

She chuckled at that. "We shall see Lt. Here when you need me..."

"Good, I have a feeling I'll need to pull upon your expertise sooner, rather than later" Dante admitted.’

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Intel Review

A Mission Post by Lieutenant Dante Xithia & Lieutenant JG Shiannah Shannas & Ensign Aldek & Avalon

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Deck 34, Ops

Timeline: (MD4) 09:35

ON:

Shiannah looked across at the tall, skeletal thin Vulcan as Ensign Aldek [NPC] tapped away at a control panel in the uber-complicated perhaps over-complicated? Surveillance and Reconnaissance Operations Center, which being something of a mouthful, was usually just referred to as the Deck 34 Ops. She pursed her lips as she watched Aldek's long, thin fingers dance across the touch sensitive board.

"I do suppose you know what you're doing, Ensign?" Shiannah asked with an arched eyebrow. She had been signed off on the various systems and horrendously complicated surveillance equipment though, to be fair, she couldn't remember what half of it did. So she'd brought along the Vulcan for 'technical' assistance and as a sounding board for her ideas.

Aldek looked over, both eyebrows arched (a not unusual expression for a Vulcan).

"I was trained on the full listing of S & R Ops Centre two weeks ago... If you'd care to check my Training Review File occasionally" the Vulcan replied bluntly as he looked up from the various screens which were now showing views of walkways, jeffries tubes and areas of the Elysium that Shiannah had not seen before. "By the way, sir, what exactly are we doing here?" the Vulcan asked in his monotone voice. I

"Part of the ongoing Intelligence Review" Shiannah explained not entirely truthfully though she let the Vulcan's pointed remark sllde... for now. "I also want to check out some of the 'issues' surrounding the ship's last Mission. Want to dot the i's and cross the t's as we used to say"

More like you're bored and the replicator's run out of your favourite vintage wine the Vulcan thought. Though, wisely, he did not share his views with his immediate CO. He paused as, as he was testing the system something had arced over the ship's systems and he found that his efforts were being traced by someone... or something.

"Most curious" Aldek mused. "I believe our incursions are being monitored..."

Suddenly a hologram of a rather attractive, if vexed, human female appeared.

"...By the Elysium's ECH, Avalon I believe?" the Vulcan continued somewhat unnecessarily.

Avalon studied the intelligence officers for a moment. "Is there a problem Lieutenant?" She asked curiously.

Shiannah looked over at the ECH and wondered where it/she ranked when not in her 'command' mode? Holographic crew members seemed all the rage these days since Voyager's EMH had, himself, became something of an unwitting celebrity a while ago. She arched an eyebrow as the female hologram seemed to be wearing an extremely well-tailored holographic uniform Envy? getting all catty at your age! Tut tut Shiannah thought to herself with a thin smile.

"Not at all, Avalon... If that is how you like to be addressed?" Shiannah replied after a moment gathering her thoughts. "Ensign Aldek and I were undertaking a review of intelligence and security procedures and protocols which is, I believe, within our remit" she explained with a slight shrug of her shoulders. She glanced at Aldek who, catching her eye, nodded and stayed silent (which in itself was a small miracle). "Following, how can I put it, the obvious... shortfalls following recent events aboard the Elysium"

"Avalon is my name, and the correct designation. You refer to the acts of sabotage and lack of knowledge around those individuals. The Elysium's AI prior to myself, was a lot more involved with the security of the vessel. My own involvement has been scaled back as per Commander Lalor's request."

"Ok..." Shiannah replied with a curt nod of her head, not entirely sure how to take the ECH's remark as she'd always considered Holographic crew members to be linked with the ship's systems rather than a separate entity from the ship's own AI. "As part of the security review would it be possible to undertake an overview of your predecessors security links?" I know I'm just fishing Shiannah thought to herself as she wondered just which systems the old ECH had had links too and, curiously, why it had been removed?

"Avalon," Dante greeted as he entered the room, whilst he was under no delusion that the hard light projection was the mere manifestation of some extremely dense and complex coding, he also appreciated her sentence, "whilst you do that, compress and transfer any crew related reports, personnel files included, of anyone included in the Andromeda incident, focus on those who still remain on the Vessel" he ordered as he finally sat.

"Sorry, for that, there's no point waiting when she can conduct my request in the background," he apologized to Shiannah.

"Now, Avalon, Please answer the Lieutenant Junior Grade".

"The former AI, ALICE was altered by Admiral Sharr to have greater autonomy in the security and day to day activities of the ship. She would respond only to Sharr, though on occasion she responded to the Current Captain and the then CHENG, One Ephraim Parish. Her prime role was to protect Admiral Sharr. I am downloading the information now into that console" She pointed to a console beside them. "As for your request about crew who died and left, that information, is a matter of public record at the express wishes of Commander Lalor. It is available on that terminal." She pointed to another console. "Of those who remain from that time, there are currently 50 people, Commander Lalor, Commander Qwyyn included in that number. And the new Chief Engineer, who is an inhabitant of the Andromeda Galaxy. A number of senior staff transferred to new postings or left starfleet completely. And of course, the Admiral and ALICE remained behind as payment." Avalon tilted her head. "This is a matter of public record Lieutenant. Commander Lalor has never hidden any of this."

"Thank you, Avalon" Dante muttered as he headed towards the console, downloading the information to his PADD once he got there, "I'll review this privately, later." he explained whilst returning to his seat, "How are we coming along with the review?"

Shiannah listened, her head cocked to on side and she looked over to Ensign Aldek making a quick "take a note" signal with her hands which the thin Vulcan nodded in agreement and made a few shorthand notes on his PaDD. She wondered if, perhaps, more of the AI ALICE remained in the core systems of the Elysium than Avalon knew?

"Ongoing..." Shiannah replied to Dante with a non-commital shrug. "We... that is Ensign Aldek and I, will continue to review security and intelligence procedures and I will forward a report on our findings and recommendations to you once we have liaised with Security.. Would that be sufficient?"

He regarded the pair thoughtfully for a moment, "A review of the ships active security procedures aren't within our remit at present. Before we collaborate further, I'd like the opportunity to speak with Commander Holmes in order to define how we'd like the departments to collaborate" he rubbed his chin as he pondered further, "over the next seven days I will be reviewing the departments P-Files* to make sure everybody is currently qualified and competent with regards to their assigned roles. Once I've finished, I'll require your assistance setting up a training program that we will then present to the Academies Intel rep"

He rose from his seat slowly, "Also, I want a team that consists of more than just yourself and Aldek. I'm sure plenty of your fellow subalterns will jump at the opportunity to participate in a leadership tasks such as this".

"Thank you for your assistance, Avalon" Shiannah said to the ECH though, as ever, she found it hard to think of the holographic construct as a 'real' member of the Elysium's crew. "Can we continue to network with you in regards to the Intelligence Review?" she asked the ECH.

"Of course" Came the calm reply.

"Ok, we'll move on and we'll keep everyone informed," Shiannah said after a moment nodding to Aldek to finish up with his PaDD as she wanted a word with the pointy eared geek in private.

"You may leave now, Avalon. Thank you for your assistance" Dante nodded towards the holographically projected artificial intelligence. He had no doubt he would need more for her eventually.

"You are both dismissed," Dante called after the pair, "don't forget to assemble the team as ordered" he added.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Getting Assigned part 1

A Mission Post by Ensign Gareb Endilev

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Starbase Gamma

Timeline: MD 6

Ensign Gareb Endilev was making his rounds in one of Starbase Gammas adjacent medical bays when he got flagged down by a sophomore grade cadet assigned to shadow him. He was hesitant at first to have said shadow but in the past few days he had grown to appreciate the young mans youthful common sense. A trait he found lacking in other 18 year old cadets. He placed his tricorder down on a nearby biobed in order to give the young cadet, a caitian, his undivided attention.

"Yes, Cadet." Gareb said. "What can I help you with?" he asked.

Gareb was handed a padd. "I adjusted my study like you suggested. I think it works out better. I just wanted to let you give it the "once over."

"Sure thing." Gareb said. "Step into my office." he said. "Age before antennae." he said, gesturing for the cadet to enter ahead of him.

"Sir, regulations state..." he started to say, Gareb waved him off however. "I know. I'm informal in that way though. As long as you do your job, everyone's equal to me."

The cadet nodded and went on it and seated himself. "Can I get you anything?" the MO asked.

The caitian shook his head no. "Fair enough." Gareb said. he settled into his seat and began to read the report.

He nodded as he read. Made "uh huh" noises as well. He handed the Padd back. "What about the emphasis on the why for the procedure. For example, we use Hyronalin here." Gareb took a breath.

" But why?"

"To mitigate the effects of exposure to triolic radiation?" the Cadet said.

"Bingo! Why didn't you put it in here? Never assume we know. We want to know that you know. Does that make sense?"

"Yes sir." the Cadet replied.

"Good. Just add that in and then your report is good to go."

=/\= Captain to Dr. Endilev=/\=

=/\=Endilev here=/\=

=/\=At your earliest convenience, report to my ready room.=/\=

=/\=On my way=/\= Gareb replied. "Take over. I shouldn't be long. Work closely with Dr Prymm until I get back." The Andorian hybrid then grabbed his uniform tunic top and went on his way.

Meeting of the healers.

A Mission Post by Lieutenant Commander Tate Sullivan Ph.D. & Lieutenant Commander Sthilg

Mission: Episode 0: History Speaks

Location: Councillors office.

Timeline:

Having been on his feet most of the day the gorn was rubbing the tiredness out of his eyes. Trust some ensign to slip whilst sword fighting and almost hack her partner's arm off. Still, both were fine now and under his orders to leave the holoddeck safety on. Still, he just had to see the counsellor and he could get some hours sleep.

Waving his hand over the door alert he spoke as politely as he could. Having called ahead he knew she wouldn't have any patients, but it was always polite to ask. " Commander Tate it's doctor Sthilg. Are you free?"

Looking up from the notes she had been editing, Tate smiled and offered a pleasurable sigh. "Most definitely, Doctor. I would very much appreciate a break from my documentation and reading. Please, feel free to come in and rescue me," she said with a chuckle.

Stepping into the room the gorn gave a polite yet tooth smile. " Nice to meet you, Commander. I apologise for being ssso late. Medbay as always keeping me busy." He said extending his hand.

Sullivan shook the doctor's hands, suppressing the primitive instincts she had to bolt from the room. She had never served with a Gorn before, but she had enough professional training to let those feelings wash over her. "That's perfectly understandable, Doctor, please, feel free to make yourself comfortable. May I get you something from the replicator?"

" Klingon ssspice tea if it has it. " The gorn said sitting down noting her body language reaction to him.

"I think that can be arranged," Sullivan offered with a grin. "I can't speak to how well it will taste, but I guess you'll find out." In short order, his tea was delivered to him and Tate was sitting across from him once more. "I have never served with one of your people before. I was quite intrigued when I learned you were to be our new CMO."

" You'll find I'm not what can be described asss a normal gorn commander. Mossst consssidersss me a mutant or I sssuffer from brain damage." The MD replied taking a sip of the tea very carefully to avoid spillage due to his reptilian mouth.

Tate frowned. "Why is that, Doctor?"

" You don't get many of my ssspecies working in advanced medicine and even less working in ssstarfleet. Most consider working with the Klingonsss to be bad enough, but the federation..... Ssstill I didn't decide to do this job to win my people approval. " The gorn replied grinning to himself.

"So you're a bit of a rebel," Tate replied with a grin. "That begs the question, why did you decide to become a doctor and enter Starfleet?"

" A very long story. You sure you want to hear it? " The gorn replied.

Tate smiled. "We've got time, and if I'm not willing to listen to your stories, who would be?" She added with a chuckle.

" Well, then we'll have to ssstart at the very beginning. Over to hundred years ago I was nought, but a sssimple young gorn trying to find his role on my family'sss colony. I tried everything and it kicked my assss back in reply. The only thing I had any ability to do without messssing it up was helping the coloniesss healer. Turns out i was rather good at it. "

The gorn paused holding his drink as he gripped the drink tighter.

" Then the Federation ssship crashed and everyone ssstarted dying." He said the sadness boiling up in his voice. " It dug sssomething up in the sssoil. A disssease that made people wither and die in front of your eyesss. By the time I and the Federation doctor found a cure most of the colony was dead. "

The gorn paused again as he started into his drink.

"Some people would turn away from medicine after an experience like that," Tate offered. "I'm curious to know what it was that made you continue to pursue it after a trauma like that?"

" A promise i made to my last sister as she passed on. I promised her that I would do everything i could to stop it ever happening again." The gorn replied weakly grinning mostly to himself.

The counselor could appreciate the doctor's motivation to find purpose and meaning through tragedy, but she also couldn't help but wonder if his past might get in the way of his ability to cope with the tough realities of his job. " that sounds like a pretty challenging promise to keep given the work you do. I'm certain you've had to confront a great deal of loss and cope with the lack of control over what happens to your patients. How do you manage that given the promise you made to your sister?"

" Every time I fail I hear her sssaying to stop moping and make sssure it never happens again. I'm over four hundred yearsss old I wouldn't have made it thisss far if I couldn't pick myself up and keep going." The gorn replied giving the counselor a warm grin.

"Fair enough," Sullivan offered with a smile. "Still, that doesn't mean you haven't stumbled along the way, right? Sometimes when people stumble naturally, they still struggle to find healthy ways to cope. I'm wondering, has that ever been an issue for you?"

" Off courssse I've stumbled occasionally. Ssstill can't remember the few weeks after I lossst Jinalli and Sss'kach. Hell, I've never taken losssing any of the girlsss I love well. Guessss it'sss a curse of my long lifespan. " The gorn replied letting out weak sigh.

"I know how you cope with losing your patients. You said you hear your sister's voice urging you not to give up into do your best to prevent such a loss next time. I'm wondering, how do you cope with more personal losses, like when you lost Jinalli and S'kach?"

" With the help of my friends mossstly. I'm not afraid to asssk for help when i need to and i alwaysss want to make sssure it never happensss again."

"I'm glad to hear you're not afraid to ask for help and that you have support from your friends. I think we can agree, however, we don't have as much control over our lives as we might hope for. Making sure it never happens again is a bit of a tall order." Tete was still a bit concerned the doctor put a lot of unreasonable pressure on himself, but it certainly wasn't unheard of for a healer. She had no specific reason to withhold him from duty. He was certainly saying all the right things and not attempting to hold anything back in her view. "I see no reason not too clear you for duty," Sullivan replied.

" Good to know my head isss firmly screwed on straight." The gorn said grinning. " Are there any patientsss with isssssuesss I should be made aware of?" He asked bringing out a medical record padd.

"I'm not sure, to be honest," Tate answered. "I've had my hands full just tackling the crew's psychological needs. I'm sure the staff can bring you up-to-date. That said, you do bring up a good point. I know both our professions require strict confidentiality, though I'm hoping we can work more closely as a team because physical issues can create psychological ones, and vice versa. Of course, I will always make sure any crew member is aware if I feel the need to reach out to you or any of the medical staff, but I think it would be wise to keep an open line of communication. Anyone injured as the result of a crime, for instance, might also benefit from having a counselor to talk to immediately."

" I will. While I'm here ssshall i book you appointment for a medical checkup? You haven't been to sssee me yet." The gorn asked briging up his wrist computer.

"Absolutely," Tate replied. "Naturally, I have to set a good example," she added with a smile. "Do you have any time today? Might as well strike while the iron is hot, as the saying goes."

" I have a free appoitment in twelve hours. Think you can make it?" The doctor replied with a grin.

Tate made a show of considering his offer before smiling and saying, "I'll be there with bells on."

" Well then i'll sssee you then." The gorn replied as he stepped through the door.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Something In the Code...

A Mission Post by Commander Aurelia Holmes & Ensign Tasinder Solani & Ensign Aldek

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Deck 44, Intel data Centre

Timeline: MD4

ON:

Aldek paused as a recurring 'error' message came up on the wall-mounted screen of the Data Centre. The Vulcan pursed his lips and, with patience, tapped across the control console with his finger tips. His lips tightened as the message came up again and, despite his own training and in-depth systems knowledge he couldn't fathom the whereabouts of the technical glitch came from. With an un-Vulcan sigh he sat back in the chair and had a quick think. After a few moments he tapped coms.

=^= "Ensign Aldek requesting technical assistance from the science or engineering department in the Intel data Centre, Deck 44" =^=

=^= Ensign Solani, Science here. I'm on Deck 45 so I'll come up. On my way. =^= Tas replied and put down his PADD. He was curious as to why Intelligence would need science support when they had very good scientifically-minded officers themselves. He stepped out into the long corridor and made his way toward the turbolift.

Security Chief Lia Holmes was monitoring internal communications, when she heard Aldek's request. Remembering her own problems with the sensors, she now chose to continue monitoring the transmissions just in case of further problems. Tachyon radiation could cause allsorts of problems with equipment, this could be another.

Tas scanned the room with his eyes as he entered. Every room was new to him at this stage but having never seen an Intelligence centre before, he was curious. He caught the eye of the Vulcan Ensign and approached. "Ensign Aldek? Tasinder Solani, Science."

"Ah, yes greetings Ensign" the Vulcan replied with a curt nod of his head. "Perhaps you can assist me with the technical systems here. I seem to have come across a recurring error on this console... I have undertaken all the usual required technical recovery and redactive scenarios available though, unfortunately, to no avail" Aldek explained in his monotone voice If he advises me to 'switch off and back on again' I will not be amused the Vulcan thought to himself.

Tas openly admitted, "Well, computer science isn't my forte...er, but I have some experience of data process technologies." he quickly added, hoping he hadn't lost the confidence of the officer. He tapped the panel and tried to bring up some readings. There was a block evident. He started with a tachyon sweep, recent days had taught him even the smallest trace could be damaging to even to most robust of systems.

"It'll take a few moments to show any tachyon readings," Tas said cheerily. "So, what exactly is it you're processing?" he asked.

Aldek looked over, tight lipped as he knew his superior (Lt Shennas) would not be happy if he was loose lipped about his actions.

"I'm undertaking a retro-active security review on behalf of the Elysium's intelligence section... Unfortunately the full details are restricted because of ongoing intel and security clearance" the Vulcan explained as honestly as he could. "Basically we don't want a repeat of the... unfortunate recent incidents aboard the Elysium".

The young Ensign nodded, sensing he didn't have enough clearance to know exactly what it was he was trying to solve. He monitored the tachyon sweep as it came through to his tricoorder, though was almost disappointed when it showed nothing. ~Never that simple~ he thought to himself.

Aldek watched as Tas completed the tachyon sweep though, personally, thought the problem was not linked to the Elysium's current predicament. He continued to watch and evaluate the strata of code and system information that scrolled down the screen as Ensign Solani completed the tachyon sweep...

"Stop there, please" Aldek said suddenly, slapping his palm on the control deck. He'd seen a nodal point amongst the flowing code that seemed out of place and, touching the screen, scrolled the code back and highlighted the couple of lines that were now, obviously, out of place from the other programme information and various sub-routines.

"See... there" Aldek pointed to the rogue code out to Tas. "What do you make of that? Linked to the subroutine for the Intel Data Link..."

"That code seems off," Tas agreed. "Have they...been changed? It's almost as if they've been rewritten manually."

After a few moments thought Aldek tapped coms.

=^= "Ensign Aldek to Commander Aurelia Holmes... Would you please check the systems we are currently accessing in the Intel Data Centre, Deck 44... We are currently monitoring the Intel Data Link" =^= An extra set of eyes on the problem may be what we need the Vulcan thought.

On the bridge, Lia was some what surprised to get a call from the Data centre. =^="Ensign am I searching for anything specific?"=^= Lia started a full systems check for that area, but nothing stood out as yet. =^="Holmes to Aldek, apart from what appears to be missing data. I have found nothing worth reporting, are you having difficulties?"=^=

=^= "Not difficulties, so to speak" =^= Aldek replied somewhat testily via the ships coms as he tapped across the screen, highlighting the data he'd found and forwarded it to Commander Holmes screen on the the Bridge. =^= "As you can this data is not standard to the ship's system... or even standard to SF protocols" the Vulcan explained. "I believe it to be some kind of insurgent encrypted data... a kind of 'spy-ware' subroutine that is passively linked to the USS Elysium's Intel data Link" =^=

Lia rechecked her findings, =^="Holmes to Aldek, I have your `encoded data'. And your right about it not being Elysium or Star Fleet standard, but I find it doubtful that an Alpha quadrant species would have placed it. Which leaves only a Gamma quadrant species as they would have most to gain, but as we haven't been in contact with any how was it placed aboard?" She posed the question to the Vulcan, knowing that he have some kind of answer at the ready.

"It may be possible for the data link to be changed remotely but it would have been clocked by sensors and security systems. Why didn't the ship pick up that kind of external access?" Tas wondered aloud.

Aldek shrugged and raised an eyebrow, though up-to-date with most Intel systems he was not a trained data analyst. He thought for a moment before replying.

"Unfortunately I am not a trained data analyst though we can logically presume one of several obvious methods were employed" the Vulcan replied in his monotone and methodical manner.

"Firstly the encryption was inserted recently directly onboard via a ship's system or a data-link console..." the Vulcan explianed in his usual long-winded manner. "Which would mean a level of access and computer skills better than I personally possess. Secondly the encrypted code was... what is the human term... piggy-backed, I think you call it, subversively from some external data source attached or hidden within an otherwise seemingly innocent data file or communication. Though, as Ensign Solani has stated, why was such an incursion not spotted by the ship's AI or numerous data security systems and protocols in place? Thirdly a body, group or individual onboard or at some in the Elysium's history inserted the code as a way of subvertly monitoring the Intel data Link for reasons unknown"

The Vulcan paused for a moment. "Either of the options are... unsettling as to the high level of skill, complexity and technical ability. Obviously whoever responsible has gained access to the higher computer functions and records of, at least the Intelligence database. We can, therefore, reason that they mean the Elysium harm" Aldek expressed his concerns to the others, pursing his lips. troubling indeed the Vulcan thought.

The Vulcan then stretched his fingers and ran a few algorithms across his PaDD as, with Solani's assistance, he broke the data node down to its composit core subroutines though much of the data was either scrambled and/or encrypted Fortunately we are close to the Intel encryption section the Vulcan thought to himself.

"I'd welcome your feedback?" the Vulcan asked Solani and Holmes over the coms.

"Manually entering this into the data link from a computer console on the Elysium would have taken hours to break down, recode and encrypt. I'm questioning how somebody could have been accessing the system that long undetected or how they could have done it remotely." Tas replied honestly, feeling somewhat out of his depth. ~I wish I'd paid better attention in Computer Science 101~ he reflected with regret.

Aldek nodded in agreement the level of sophistication by whoever was responsible was a concern for everyone aboard.

"What would be our best course of action?" Aldek asked Holmes over the coms.

=^="During our transit of the wormhole, our sensors went off line. After detecting something close to the port quarter, we are still having problems with the sensors. Now could another vessel transmit that data from outside the Elysium? Especially if our sensors were playing up and the shields in a weakened state?"=^= Lia posed the question to Aldek, being Vulcan he more than most would be able to logically work out an answer. =^="As for a course of action, could you trace it back to find an entry point? Or even find residual energy from how they did it?"=^=

"It would be difficult to scan for energy," Tas observed, looking again at the data, considering what Aldek had said about piggybacking. "But we may be able to identify when it was placed. Even the basic levels of computer clearance will show us the time indices of alterations to code. I'm assuming somebody has covered their tracks but there is still likely to be a gap or jump in the rest of the code' time entries."

Aldek listened intently considering Ensign Solani's input.

"If I may add the intrusive software node... or whatever we want to call it is an ongoing evolving programme. Think of it as kind of a separate organism within the host system inserted there to look into the Intel data Link and either record it's findings or forward the gathered intelligence to whoever installed it at a later date when initiated. As far as I can tell it does not forward a signal or, presently, is aay way linked to an external device and only stores the data it gathers for later retrieval. Therefore I would suggest, for the moment, that we only remotely monitor the intruder data node while gently removing its software links from the more involved and higher level intelligence systems. If we are patient we could possibly lure the intruder out when they try to check their data and instantly record what station and at time it was accessed and by whom as Ensign Solani suggested. Perhaps, with some technical assistance, in time we could ir required feed false data and intel through the node thus making it work for us?" Aldek asked.

=^="Question Ensign's, I can't monitor every station. Any suggestions on which sections would be the most likely to be accessed?"=^= Lia knew this needed to be solved, she had a few idea's but perhaps the other two might have a better idea.

Solani considered this for a moment, reflecting on how they would know where abouts the access would come from. "I'm not convinced we can narrow it down," he admitted. "However, we may be able to split the workload of monitoring for the access between multiple computer processes so our detection can be quicker."

"Actually I believe it would logically possible, perhaps with the assistance of a computer specialist, to tag the encrypted data so to report as and when it is accessed for the retrieval of the stored information and by which station and at what time" Aldek suggested. "Then it would be a simple and less protracted matter of using the security feed to see who was accessing that particular station at the time and the access codes used"

Tasinder nodded in agreement. "I'll have a computer specialist from Science prep the appropriate coding."

The answers she got left Lia confused, =^="Ok guy's, you do what you have to. Then report to me and inform me of what you need from my department, Ensign Solani what time frame are we looking at?"=^=

=^= Give me an hour and I'll find a specialist =^= came the reply.

Aldek nodded though was always surprised by the oh-so Human requirement for continued discussion ad infinitum when a possible and totally logical solution was to hand. He sighed an un-Vulcan-like sigh as he sat back and rubbed at his jutting chin.

"Excellent" the Vulcan said after a while. "I will keep my CO, Lt Shannas, and the Intel department informed of our findings" Aldek continued. "I will also keep an eye on the Intel systems affected and keep you updated. Thank you for your help, Ensign Solani, I may require further assistance and will keep you informed also" Aldek said. He closed down his PaDD, his own thoughts distant.

It took them a bit but they got the hatch open and soon the bridge senior staff entered the main bridge on Deck 18.

Phoenix looked at Lieutenant Stiegalle. "Report Lieutenant" she said as she briskly walked to the center chair.

Alphonse glanced around the bridge, "We're kinda screwed, we have no idea what the hell happened. The only thing I can say for sure is that, Ensign Solani has been injured. All other stations have failed to report, save for the Marines. And they appear to be fine, and have no casualties". He stood looking like a naughty school boy that had been caught, "Captain, I really have no clue as to what the hell happened".

Jaeih moved to her console and relieved the person there but there was not much she could do.

Gary had stepped out from behind Phoenix and moved to his chair He was looking at initial damage reports coming in to the bridge. "Life support is undamaged, Sensors are down. Engines are on line." He rattled off all while reading more reports coming in.

Thanks to Dyhei, Dante eventually clambered on to the bridge, he muttered a thank you before slowly limping off to the CIC, "I'll go over the logs downstairs, Ma'am" he called out before descending the stair case. He thanked the gods for the railing as he relinquished some of the burden that had been placed upon his frail leg. Downstairs would be a first aid kit stocked with mild painkillers, he'd likely need to see the doc after this.

Phoenix nodded. She herself moved to the view port behind the main screen. And she stared. "Ok... there is nothing out there. No debris, no other... hold that." She called out "Taylor, Holmes, get here. Liselle, we have a manual steering column. You and Waters get it prepped in case we need it. Someone run down to Engineering, we have a ship inbound!" She could not make out the make or anything clear yet. Just the blue haze of a deflector.

Lia glanced at the console, "Stiegalle, get the hell off the bridge! Head for the armoury, grab yourself a security detail on the way and guard that sucker until further notice". She looked at the Captain, "Somehow I don't think this is gonna end well, if I remember correctly from the battle logs of the Defiant. The Founders used this tactic to place a spy on Federation ships, they used a long range transporter and when challenged played dumb". Moving towards the Captain she continued to talk, "Now this may not be the Founders, but it maybe a species which has acquired their technology". Stopping she now waited for the Captains response.

"Maybe.." Phoenix considered it as she tried to get a better glimpse.

Gary stared out the view port, there was a ship out there but it was too far away to make out any specific details . "Captain, I recommend we launch a Valkyrie as an added security precaution as well as it giving us information about this mystery ship. I'll fly the Valkyrie."

Michael popped in on the Bridge just in time. "Captain. Commander. Might the marines assist? " he asked.

Gary nodded at the young marine as he waited for Phoenix to make her decision on his proposal to fly the Valkyrie. "I'll see you on the flip side Lieutenant."

"Do it. Launch the fighters." Phoenix said softly.

Gary nodded and turned to leave the bridge. "I'll contact you once I'm outside and can see just who or what this other ship might be." He glanced in Lia's direction but said nothing as headed to the nearest lift.

Liselle stepped over to Lia's side. She set her fingers gently on the woman's arm. "He'll be fine," she said quietly.

Lia turned and smiled, "Thanks Liselle, but somehow I think I'm going to have to get used to this. But then, do you ever get used to it?" She was pleasantly pleased it was Liselle who was helping her, she hoped both she and the CEO would hit it off. "How's it going between you and Matias? You make a good couple you know, he's a good looking guy in his way".

Qwyyn's eyes darted to either side. "It's...going...." she stammered and she shook her head. "I honestly don't know how it's going, or what is going on. Maybe after we get through all of this, I can actually take a moment and try to get a grasp on things. You and Commander Taylor seem to be doing just fine?" she prodded. In honesty, she wouldn't so much mind hearing some bad news on that front.

Picking up a slight note in her voice, Lia looked at Liselle. "Oh it's not been all flowers and romance, there have been times I could have killed him you know". She glanced at her console as it flickered into life, "Look Liselle, if we get through this in one piece. Do you want to talk? I'm not much of friend if I can't listen, if you want to that is". She smiled at her friend and hoped they could talk, for some reason she felt a connection to Liselle.

Qwyyn hesitated a moment. She wondered exactly what Lia had in mind. This talk could prove to be very productive. On the other hand...

Liselle was willing to give it a shot. She nodded. "Yes. Absolutely."

"Manual steering is ready," Ken Waters announced. His eyes lingered on the Captain, grateful to see her in one piece.

Phoenix nodded at Ken. "Thank you Senior Chief." She glanced around the bridge. Everyone was slowly getting back to normal, but without sensors they were flying, or in this case drifting blind.

=ENGINEERING=

Matias finally came out on the deck that Engineering was in. He was aware of his state of undress, but he was furry and it didn't seem to matter much. He did rush to his office where a spare uniform was. He was seen by his crew and there was a lot of snickering. "The Big Bad Wolf is here at last!" somebody said.

Matias came out fixing his collar. "All right, fun's over," he said. "We need to restore power to the ship and then find out what happened. Let's get started."

Matias and his crew worked hard around the clock. After analyzing the problem, he knew this wasn't sabotage, but some other phenomenon. Finally, they succeeded in restoring power to the ship. Emergency power switched to main power. He had to cut off non-essential operations until it was fully implemented.

[Bridge]

Ensign Aldek secured the Intel console and began running a few measures though was limited by the emergency power. He looked over the the ECH, Avalon, "I concur that Commander Taylor's recommendation to launch fighters as a defensive measure is a good one" the Vulcan said with a nod. "Also, with sensors down, perhaps the Valkyrie could check the hull for external damage?" he added with a raised eyebrow.

Once the pain killers had begun to do their work and Dante found himself able to move more freely. He'd abandoned the CIC for the upper levels, keen to grasp the opportunity for reflection this situation had provided them. Spooks, as a rule, tended to find it more difficult to just drop right into a crew. Dante was no exception to this rule. He needed to watch them at their best, he felt this ongoing incident would be nothing less than eye opening.

Heading directly for the Intel station, an almost redundant position now the CIC below was open to them, intent on getting stuck in.

"Ensign," he opened once he was within feet of the console, "I need you to take over in the CIC" he ordered as he glanced over the taller Vulcan's shoulder at the readings displayed, "I need you to begin compiling a report based on what we know so far, adding to it as we get more information. I want as much detail as possible ".

Aldek nodded and "Acknowledged, LT" the Vulcan replied though, from what he could gather so far, the Intel report would be somewhat threadbare on facts and heavy on speculation. "I will see if I can take some up-to-date readings from sensorsand consoles throughout the ship and see if we can get some kind of coherent map of what happened and a timescale" he added, picking up his PaDD and headed down to the CIC.

[Armoury]

By this time Alphonse had arrived at the armoury, =^="Stiegalle to the bridge, I'm now at the location you ordered me to with a security detail. Anyone care to tell me what I'm here for?"=^=

Catching the message from Alphonse, Lia responded. "If I had an answer then I would tell you Lieutenant, for now just stay there and stop anyone. And I mean anyone from entering that location, unless the Captain or myself clear it". She couldn't explain it, but she felt that something was heading that way.

=^= Matthews to Raynar. Jim head to the bridge and assist anyway you can. I'm assisting Cmdr Taylor with the Valkyrie =^=

=^= Aye Sir=^= Jim replied then headed for the bridge.

-=-Fighters launch-=-

Moments after leaving the bridge, Gary was buckling in to a Valkyrie and going through his checklist. Once he had completed it he took off and exited the Elysium's massive shuttle bay which also housed the Valkyrie fighters. =^= Taylor to Elysium, have launched and heading toward the inbound ship. Will tell more when I get closer.=^=

“Acknowledged” came the static reply. The comms seemed to be affected.

Gary frowned as the reply was static filled, ""Taylor to Elysium, your reply is 'dirty' (filled with static} See if you can clean it up." He suggested.

Suban Mallix [NPC] strapped himself into the 'chair', checking through obilgitory pre-flight on the Valkyrie. The Andoran was already running late as the Crew Chief had wanted to double check something with the bird before take-off - Probably not easy with things running on emergency power on the Elysium. He'd seen the CO, Commander Taylor take off and was impatient to get going. Though, despite this, he knew he had to wait for a full pre-flight check and the all clear...

Moments later Suban was out in the Valkyrie coming in on the CO's starboard wing. Suban winced as his ears were filled with static and he dialed down the volume before signing in to ship-to-ship coms. =^= "WO Mallix on your Starboard wing, Commander" =^= he reported in over coms and settled back, eyes sweeping across the Valkyrie's board and sensor array awaiting orders...

Gary's reply was instantaneous. He was glad to have backup. =^=Very good Mr.Mallix, maintain your position there, watch your board we don't want anything or anyone sneaking up on us." As they pair continued on course toward the incoming ship.

Michael suited up and launched his Valkyrie. The static was irritating. "Commander, coming up on your starboard wing" he said to Taylor.

"Hearing Andrews, Gary nodded to himself and toggled his comm. "Very good Mr. Andrews, Take up a position on my port side if you please as Mr.Mallix is already on my starboard wing "

Suban Mallix 'squelched' the coms to signal he'd understood Taylor's instructions. The Andoran checked the Valkyrie's LR scanners and noted the coordinates where the Elysium had 'painted' the incoming vessel. Checking the board his antennae twitched as, as far as he could see, the incoming vessel was coming in with shields up and at full impulse there seemed something familiar about the sensor readings though it was still too far out to for the Valkyrie's sensors...

"Roger that Commander " Michael replied, adjusting his position to come alongside Gary on the port wing.

===== Bridge ====

Jim popped out from the j-tube. "Captain. 1LT Matthews asked I report here to offer marine assistance " he said to Lalor.

"Thank you Sergeant. Please work with Commander Holmes and her team."

"Aye Captain " Jim replied then turned to Holmes. "Commander, shall i send a squad or 2 to Lt Stiegalle?" He asked.

"Sgt. Raynar, that would be a good idea. And see if you can set up a couple of roving patrols as well, I have a nasty feeling about that incoming vessel". Lia pointed at Raynar, "Tell them to keep their eyes open, for anything out of the ordinary".

"Aye Aye Commander" Jim replied with a salute. =^=Raynar to Stiegalle. I'm heading your way, Lt. Sending roving patrols on all decks =^=

Alphonse couldn't believe his ears, =^="Hey Raynar you old convict, glad your with me. Do you have any idea what the hell is going on? Because I don't have a clue, and my section is kindda jumpy"=^=.

Jim laughed to himself. =^= Stiegalle, you pup. Seems we're gonna be partners for a while. The nebula is playing havoc. I'll meet you in the armory =^=

====Main Sickbay====

It took a bit for Tate to arrive, but she finally made it to sickbay, her emergency duty station unless otherwise requested. Given the excitement outside, she figured it was the best place for her to be. As she expected, the medical staff were buzzing, moving from place to place with careful but expedient efficiency. Rather than interrupt the flow of activity mid-stream, Sullivan joined a nurse handling triage. The faster they could prioritize patients, the better of they'd all be.

-=- The Oncoming Vessel-=-

As the Elysium fighters moved closer in defensive formation, the outline of the oncoming vessel became clearer and clearer. It was the hull of a Sovereign Class vessel. Federation. And it was obviously under full impulse as it powered towards the oncoming fighters.

"It's friendly... or at least Federation" Suban broke silence on the ship-to-ship coms. "Orders, Commander?" the Andoran asked. Strange that the Sovereign Class vessel has yet to announce itself or identify itself to the Elysium? And it's getting mighty close and well within coms range? he thought, he had a niggling suspicion in the back of his mind. Like that feeling you get at the nape of your neck when you know someone is silently watching you Or I'm just freakin paranoid Suban chuckled to himself.

Michael had a nagging feeling something wasn't right with this. "Commander, shouldn't we have had contact from them?" He asked, indicating the Sovereign class vessel.

Gary didn't answer Andrews immediately he was checking his sensors and running a scan on the incoming Federation ship. "Quite right Mr. Andrews." He switched frequencies to contact the ship. "Attention incoming Federation ship. This is Commander Taylor of the Federation starship Elysium, do you require assistance?" As he waited for a reply he checked his scans and saw interference was playing havoc with the readings. Mr. Andrews, Mr. Suban, maintain defensive positions until we know what is going on."

Suban acknowledged then pulled back slightly, checking through the Valkyries weapons and sensors... for a moment the ECM light flashed on his board that someone was doing a sensor sweep. It looked for a moment that someone war targeting then the board went quiet again...

A moment passed and then they got their reply.

"Attention oncoming fighters. This is the starship USS Strikers Light, Commander Storm commanding, from Starbase Gamma. We require no assistance. We are here to render ours."

Suban sighed in relief, the Andorian's finger untensed from the triggers of the Valkyrie as he switched the weapons systems back to 'safe'. He sat back in the chair loosening the straps and awaited further orders from the CO or the Valkyries withdrawal order from the Elysium...

"Understood Strikers Light."Gary replied before he contacted the Elysium. "Taylor to Elysium. Captain, it's the USS Strikers Light. A Commander Storm in command. They say their here to offer assistance."

The reply from the Ely came through. "Acknowledged Commander. Escort them in please."

"Understood Elysium." Gary answered, switching com frequencies he again contacted the other Federation starship. "Commander Storm, we've been instructed to escort you to the Elysium. If you follow us please." Gary then spoke to Suban and Andrews. "Mr.Mallix , Mr. Andrew, we've been instructed to escort the Strikers Light to the Elysium. Please flank the ship while I lead us back."

"Will do and understood" Suban replied quickly all the while shifting the stick and giving the Valkyrie a little extra boost to loop over and around the approaching ship and taking up s position to the port and slightly to the rear of the USS Strikers Light. "Taking up escort position upon the port-side flank of the USS Strikers Light" the Andorian dutifully reported his position to Taylor and then settled back. He randomly flicked through his eclectic in-flight music selection Weird how one moment you're ready to go all guns blazing, adrenalin rush central, like some holodeck training sim the next your sitting back and playing escort to a friendly Sovereign Class... he thought just as an early recording of "Reelin' in the Years" by Steely Dan* kicked in over his headset which made him grin.

Suban Mallix sat back in his seat aboard the Valkyrie and escorted the Strikers Light in, his antenna nodding slightly to the music.

"Very good Mr. Mallix." Gary replied and heard the beginning of "Reelin in the Years". As he moved into the lead position as Mallix and Andrews took up flanking positions on either side of the Sovereign class Strikers Light. he decided to add some music of his own, and soon "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" was blasting through the cockpit of his fighter. Once that was done he began to lead the group back to the Elysium though inwardly he was wondering how the other starship knew to look for them. He shook his head, he could get his answers when they reached the Elysium.

Michael kept his position on Gary's port wing as they escorted the Strike Light back to the Elysium. Something just didn't sit right with him. His muscles began to tighten. {That means trouble} he thought

The Strikers Light followed the fighters back to the Elysium.

==ENGINEERING==

After power was restored, the next thing on the agenda was weaponry. The phasers needed to be recharged as well as shields and torpedoes. They began work on that so the Elysium could be defended. Matias would not rest until this was accomplished. "Come on, come on," he growled to the board as the weaponry slowly increased in power.

["Mr Grronkil, Tell me do we have engines?"] Phoenix called down from the bridge.

"Warp engines are still offline, my alpha," said Matias. "We are working on that. We have impulse, shields are at 90%, and we have phasers and torpedoes."

"Thank you very much for that Mr Grronkil. Your teams efforts are appreciated." Phoenix replied with honesty.

"Thank you, my alpha," said Matias. "I will keep you posted on our progress."

=/\= Bridge =/\=

Phoenix turned to Ken. "Set our course back on the previous heading, 1/2 impulse. Lets not ram the Strikers Light."

"Yes, Captain," he said, his relief evident in the breathe he exhaled. Quieter, he whispered to himself. "Gladly."

=/\= Strikers Light=/\=

On the fully operational Strikers Light, Commander Theodore Storm studied the sleek lines of the Elysiums class as it came into full view. Around it, its fighters swarmed as bees around a hive.

"Open Channels."

The Communication officer nodded and opened the channel.

"Attention Elysium, this is commander Storm, of the Strikers Light. I'd normally say, welcome to the Gamma Quadrant, but it seems to be rather wrong in this situation. What is your ship's status?"

["Commander Storm, this is Commander Lalor, commanding officer of the Elysium. Our status is this. We have impulse, 90% Shields, and defensive capabilities. No Warp. And we have no idea what happened to our ship."] The young officer appeared on the screen.

"You probably hit one of the Anomalies from the nebular. Not unlike those which were in the expanse to be honest. But these are a lot rarer. We can assist with repairs, however, if your warp is out, it will take a while to restore , a couple of days if you were hit by one of the anomalies." He noticed the woman's face as he spoke and saw her grimace at the fact that her ship was now limping to Gamma Station.

["Well that ...no human word for what I want to say really."] Phoenix replied. ["I don't suppose you could tow us to Gamma Station please?"]

Storm studied the young officer. She had manners that was sure. "Of course Commander. I will send my engineers to assist yours as well. Call your birds home Commander. We will get your ship in tow as quick as we can."

["Thank you Commander Storm. Elysium out."]

=/\= Elysium Bridge =/\=

Phoenix turned to her crew. "Engineering, prepare for towing. Helm, make sure our course remains steady. Commander Holmes, secure from red alert and call our birds home please."

"Acknowleged, my alpha." said Matias. "Prepare for towing." he said to the crew.

Lia nodded, =^="All stations, all stations this is the bridge. Stand down from red alert, repeat. Stand down from red alert. That is all"=^=. She then switched channels, =^="USS Elysium to all Valkyries, return to mother. Do you copy?"=^= She waited for some kind of a response.

Inside his fighter, Gary heard Lia's call to return to the Elysium, "Understood Momma Bird. the chicks are returning to the nest." a smile gracing his lips as he said it. "Mr. Andrews, Mr. Mallix, time for us to return to the roost."

"Permission to do an extra fly-by sensor sweep of Momma Bird for external damage" Mallix asked over ship-to-ship coms. The Andorian didn't think the sweep was totally necessary though he thought he could do with some extra 'stick' time in the Valkyrie.

Oh hearing the request Lia decided it might be a good idea, =^="Roger that fly-by, but stand off to a safe distance. Not that you should need reminding, then bring that chick home in one piece. Elysium out"=^=.

With a grin on her face, Lia answered. =^="Don't bust any feathers Commander, I'm sure your nest is right where you left it. Elysium out"=^=.

"No worry on busting feathers Momma Bird. Gosh I hope so. I'd hate to have to build a new one." Gary bantered.

Things had happened fast, and her littles had been freaked out... If not for her other responsibilities, her students, Jessinia would have been hard-pressed to contain her unnatural fury. Not that she had a target. As soon as her students reported in She released them to the use of engineering. and security. It would be good experience. All that was left was to ride it out. Yeah...

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Gamma Arrival

A Mission Post by Commander Phoenix Lalor & Commodore Karlos Evans-Kyler

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Starbase Gamma

Timeline: MD 6 11h00

The large space station loomed large before the Elysium as she all but limped into dock.

Towed/Guided by the Strikers Light until they had gotten back to warp, the Elysium's crew had spent the intervening hours repairing what they could and making sure the injured were taken care of.

Phoenix had managed to get changed and showered and now sat in her chair, feeling marginally better with no sleep. 'Time enough for that when you die' she thought as she watched the station grow larger on the viewer.

She hit her comm. ["Attention Crew of the Elysium. We are arriving at Starbase Gamma. You will have time for R&R once we are docked and if you are not required for repairs. We will be here for a week before departure."]

That said, she turned her attention back to the viewer. As they entered the internal docking area, the communications officer notified her of an incoming call.

"Commodore Evans-Kyler is on the comm for you Commander."

"On Screen." The screen cleared and Phoenix inclined her head politely. "Commodore." She said softly.

The older man looked at the young commander in the centre chair and held back a sniff of disapproval. For one of commander rank and the age of the female officer, to be in command of such a vessel.... ["Commander Lalor. Welcome to Starbase Gamma."]

"Thank you Commodore. We appreciate your hospitality."

The man approved of manners and it was nice to see that in a young officer. ["You have been cleared for docking in bay 35. Your crew will have access to the station while we assist with repairs."]

Phoenix nodded. "Thank you Sir."

The Commodore gave another nod and severed the connection.

Phoenix took a shallow breath and watched as docking was completed. A week in dock would allow all to have time to relax.

Once Docking was completed, she turned to the bridge crew. "Commence shut down of non essential systems. Then open the docking hatches so we can let engineering teams onto the Ship." She paused "Avalon, commence R&R rotation. "

So saying she vanished into her ready room she had a bad feeling about their time here. And she wanted time to think.

LT(JG) Ja'Marcus Brandt's Personal Log - High Hopes and Chance Encounters

The following is a personal log from LT(JG) Ja'Marcus Brandt.

Ja'Marcus sat in his bunk, aboard a small transport ship, en route to Starbase Gamma, dressed in a pair of black BDU's, and a white t-shirt, both copiously stained, ripped, and filthy, after having participated in a tactical simulation the ship's sec/tac officer had invited him to be a part of. He had the lights dimmed, and a piece of soft-music playing in the background. He wasn't sure which piece, but some sort of electronica, with a bit of hip-hop blended in, by the sound of it. Leaning back he placed his hands behind his head, and settled in. "Computer, begin recording personal log." he said, and waited for the affirmative beep.

"I can honestly say I have high hopes for the new assignment I've been given. It's on one of the most advanced, and definitely one of the biggest ships in the fleet. Plus it'll be a chance for me to get to work with one of the more interesting members of the fleet as well, the non-human chief engineer, Matias Grronkil, a Grral, which I've never had any experience with. I've read up on him, and his species, and he seems like a good guy, but it also seems like it will be a bit of an adjustment. I've already been in contact with Teegan, and James, and somehow Teegan is actually going to be able to swing a couple days of leave on SBG so we can see each other. I didn't even know her ship was going to be in the area, but I'm glad it will be. It's been almost three years since we saw each other last.

"James won't be anywhere near there, of course, and his chances of getting leave would probably be slim to none anyway, but that's alright, we ran into each other a few months ago, purely by chance, and got to spend a few hours catching up. For now I will take what I can get. I was a bit surprised when I was accepted for the position I've been given though. I'm relatively young, and though I do know my job quite well it's still not exactly something I'd really expected to be given. I applied more out of curiosity than anything, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I'm looking forward to getting to meet Commander Lalor, as she seems like a very interesting person to work with. There were a few other members that stood out to me, but I can't recall their names right now. So, suffice it to say that I am getting more and more excited as the time draws near, and we get closer to our docking at SBG.

"For now, I'm exhausted, that tactical simulation we ran through today lasted for ten hours, and I don't think I've done that much physical combat simulation since I took my tactical classes at the academy. I'm going to get out of these filthy clothes, and take a real shower tonight, to lessen the soreness come tomorrow. Here's hoping that will do any good at all..." he said, letting the thought trail off. "End Log." he said, and then swung his legs off the bunk, and stood up, stripping his shirt off as he grabbed the towel he'd thrown over his desk chair on the way to the shower.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Getting Assigned part 2

A Mission Post by Ensign Gareb Endilev

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Starbase Gamma

Timeline: MD 6

Gareb exited the secondary sickbay of Starbase Gamma and started to make his way through deck 56 to find the nearest turbolift. On the way there he realized that he was only in a lab coat and not "proper" uniform. He made a mental note of that and continued on his way to the lifts. He entered an empty one. "Deck 25." he ordered. The car whisked him on his way and within minutes he was there. He made a beeline for his quarters. He hung his coat up and transferred his communicator badge to a duty uniform tunic. Wasting no time, he put it on on his way out.

He walked straight back to his lift. "Deck 12." he ordered. Not long after he stood at the CO's door.

"Enter." came a voice from within. Gareb did so and was offered a set, which he gladly took. "Can I get you anything, Ensign? I have coffee."

"That sounds nice, sir. Thank you." Gareb replied. He was handed a saucer and china cup emblazoned with the UFP seal. He thanked the Captain,

"Dr Endilev. You've done something terrible here while at Gamma." he said, looking at one of the many pads on his desk. Gareb started to speak but was cut off. "In my hand are several of your performance reviews, and they all say the same thing. Shameful acts of efficiency! Good at his job. Helpful to junior personnel! I could go on." the CO said

Gareb was dumbfounded. He just decided to go with the flow. "Sir?" he said. The CO slid a padd across the desk. "Orders to report to the USS Elysium. MO and Instructor."

"Instructor?" He asked. The CO nodded. The pair discussedthe particulars of the assignment, eventually culminating in the assignment of a cadet. He was informed that the cadet had already been brought aboard.

Gareb was dismissed to pack and beam aboard.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - New blood

A Mission Post by Ensign Gareb Endilev & Lieutenant Commander Shrytaat Zh'echilnoth

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: USS Elysium, deck 12

Timeline: MD 6 15h00

Gareb, fresh from beam in decided to waste no time. He got a set of quickie directions and immediately set out to get the lay of the land regarding the Academy's facilities. As he made his way through the ship he took a minute to make his own map as he went. He entered a turbolift and ordered it to take him to his new destiny.

He arrived and began to get his bearings.

Shrytaat was going over her listing of crew and finding she had a new instructor, had made her way down the halls to the Offices of the lecturers. She stopped outside the medical Instructor's office and rapped on the door.

"Already?" Gareb said as he had just sat down. "It's open!" he said, interested to see who his first visitor may be.

The tall andorian entered. "Ensign Endilev?" she asked brusquely. "I am Lt. Commander Zh'echilnth, the Academy Commandant." She held out her hand human style, "Welcome to the Elysium."

"Thank you." Gareb said, taking her hand. "Pleasure to meet you, Commander." he added. He gestured to his replicator. "May I offer you something?"

"No thank you Ensign. I thought I would introduce myself to you, and answer any questions you may have around the ship and your posting." Shrytaat replied.

"Thank you." Gareb said. "My main questions would be on the curriculum. Is it lecture, hands on, or a little bit of both?"

"I would like to see it be both. We have a very good CMO here and he would be a great help to you and your students." the Commander replied.

Gareb nodded. "I'll remember that." he said. "Also would my focus only be on the medical students? What I'm trying to say is this. Are other department cadets learning first aid and such?"

"Each cadet will need to take the basic first aide courses as per their curriculum. But your main focus will be Medical cadets." Shrytaat replied her head inclining as she did so.

"Understood." Gareb said, nodding

"I would also suggest getting to know your colleagues both within the academy and outside. I want my team to interact with the regular crew as much as possible. It will assist with integration of the cadets which will be our eventual goal."

Gareb nodded. "I'll do that." he said.

Shrytaat inclined her head, her antenna twitched slightly. "Then I shall let you get settled in. The majority of the Crew and Cadets are currently on R&R and exploring Starbase Gamma, so you will have a couple of days to settle in before our departure."

"Thank you for thinking to stop by, Commander." Gareb said.

The Commander nodded and turned to the door. "Oh and Ensign, enjoy your time here." She then left without another word.

Gareb nodded. "i'll do that as well." he waved and then logged into his console.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - A Series of Fortunate Events

A Mission Post by Lieutenant JG Ja'Marcus Brandt & Commander Phoenix Lalor

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: TBD

Timeline: TBD

Ja'Marcus materialized on the Elysium, choosing to beam in instead of wasting time going through the station, and then through the massive ship that would be his new home in the coming months, and hopefully years. He was dressed in his normal duty uniform, just in case they needed to put him straight to work, but was really hoping to get at least one day to spend with Teegan, since she'd managed to somehow get a few days layover of her own.

He quickly made his way to the Commander's ready room and pressed the small button to announce his presence, and then waited to be allowed entry.

Phoenix looked up from her paperwork and called out "Come!" As she stood up and straightened her uniform.

Ja'Marcus had seen pictures of his new CO, but they hadn't prepared him for the reality. She was a stunningly beautiful woman. Tall, and lithe, and in some ways even intimidating, though he was quite sure it was unintentional. He stepped into the office and cleared his throat. "Lieutenant J.G. Ja'Marcus Brandt, reporting for duty, ma'am." he intoned as evenly as he could. He was always nervous with new assignments, and this one was obviously going to be no different.

A momentary puzzled look crossed Phoenix's face and then it cleared. "Ah yes, the Structural Engineer Specialist Matias told me was coming." She smiled and held out her hand human style. "Welcome to the Elysium Lieutenant."

Returning the smile with genuine warmth Ja'Marcus held his own hand out, shaking hers. "Yes, ma'am, that would be me. Thank you, for the welcome!" he said as he released her hand. "And also, thank you for accepting my application. I know I am quite young to be serving on so prestigious of a ship, but from a structural standpoint I can't imagine a better place to be than on a ship this big, learning how to keep her together, and how all the many systems have to be integrated to keep it all running smoothly. She's truly an impressive feat of engineering." he said.

"Aye that she is, and our chief engineer loves to keep her perfect, so you will be a welcome addition to the crew if you can assist with that." Phoenix said waving him to a seat. "And do not worry about youth Lieutenant, I am 25 and youth is no barrier on this ship."

"That is quite good to know. And, I am so sorry to spring this on you when I've just now come aboard, but I do have a favor to ask. If the CEO approves would it be okay if I have at least one day before I officially come aboard and get to work. My wife is on SBG as well, and I was really hoping to get to spend at least a day with her. We haven't seen each other in quite some time." he said, hating himself for even asking before he'd even been put to work, but sometimes you had to do what you had to do. "If that would be a problem I can completely understand, and we can work out a way to see each other during my off time." he quickly added, suddenly nervous.

"That is no issue. Though you could have requested she join you here. The more crew the better." Phoenix replied calmly. "I am all for family being together."

"Be careful what you wish for." Ja'Marcus said, jokingly. "I've got a husband too, and he's a marine." he added at her perplexed look. "But, in all seriousness, we are all incredibly happy with our careers, and the way we've been able to manage our time together. There's no need for us to serve on the same ship. Besides she is quite comfortable on the medical ship she's on. With most of the crew being Denobulan she feels much less isolated." he said.

"Well if any of you change your mind, let me know ok? I believe family should have the opportunity to be together."Phoenix said calmly. She sorted through PADD's. "Have you been given your cabin assignment?"

"I will definitely do that." Ja'Marcus said, instantly warming to this woman, who, for her age, was surprisingly wise, and a touch motherly in her apparent caring about the emotional wellbeing of her crew. It was good she had such a big ship, otherwise that motherliness could cause an unwieldy tangle when it came to families. He knew how hair-raisingly complicated that sort of thing could get. He figured it out when he went back to Denobula with Teegan for the first time. He still had nightmares about not remembering names, and familial connections to this day. Pushing those thoughts aside he shook his head, "No, ma'am. I came straight here once I came aboard." he answered her question.

She held out a PADD. "I make sure I have copies of everything just in case" "Your cabin assignment. And as we have a few days more before departure, I do not see an issue with you getting time off. After you see Matias, you should be fine to go I am sure."

Ja'Marcus took the proffered padd, and smiled, "Thank you, ma'am. I will head down to see him now." he said in reply. She hadn't said it in so many words but he was obviously dismissed, and stood, turning to leave. Engineering was quite a ways away, and he wanted to see it, almost more than he wanted to check in with his new chief, but nowhere near as much as he wanted to see Teegan.

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Code of conduct

A Mission Post by Cadet Senior Grade Toumun

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Starbase Gamma

Timeline: MD 12, 2300 Hours

Somewhere behind him, a Bajoran cradled a broken nose and blood dripped down the man's arms as he howled about the pain. Toumun cursed under his breath and continued walking away, ignoring the attention of the bar's patrons and pushing himself through a small cluster of people to get through the exit.

Disappointment and regret had already begun creeping into the young Orion's mind not because the man hadn't deserved to be hit -- oh, he definitely did -- but rather because of how easily he'd been baited into it. Doctor Buttler at the Academy would be disappointed, Toumun figured, but it probably also wouldn't have surprised his section counselor either.

Quick to anger, it was noted in the Cadet's counseling files somewhere, was a hallmark of his Orion heritage. Well, half-Orion-heritage. Half. If not for his human half, would he even be capable of such introspective analysis? Oh, introspective analysis, Toumun thought, somewhat amused by the context of the terminology that rose up in his thoughts. Doc Buttler would be happy to hear I'm wrestling with these questions. It seems like progress. That's what I'll tell them if this gets brought up. 'Yes, I hit the man. He deserved it. I feel bad about the pain it caused.' No, that doesn't sound good and it's not really accurate. Scrap that.

In all likelihood, Toumun convinced himself, no one at the Academy would ever even hear of this incident anyway. Hell, he wasn't even in an academy uniform. He was just a young, green, handsome young man traveling through a random Starfleet gamma quadrant starbase with no visible affiliation to the Starfleet organization. Then he looked down to the duffel bag that was slung across his body. The bag was emblazoned with the academy logo in a bright, contrasting yellow lettering. Fuck my life, he thought.

Toumun didn't go directly to Elysium from the bar, but rather circled back on himself a few times and employed other evasion techniques to make sure he wasn't being followed or surveilled. Whoever said education wouldn't have real life uses obviously didn't start fights in alien drinking establishments and then escape scrutiny be employing the lessons learned in Professor Fillman's SEAR trainings. Real world pratice, Toumun told himself. Maybe that's the right line of reasoning.

He reported to the security officer at Elysium's airlock just before the midnight deadline on his paperwork. He was directed to his assigned quarters on Deck 15 within the cadet block, and told to check in with the commandant's office the following day.

"Welcome home," he muttered to himself as he dropped his bag on the empty bunk. He looked around the shared quarters. Two things struck him immediately. He had no idea who his roommates would be and he hated getting new roommates.

He stepped over to his workstation. Homework station, rather. Constantly reminded of academy life. Cadets back in San Francisco were too protected, treated like little budding flowers that had to be protected from the harsher elements of life. He hoped this year would be different, but he doubted it would be.

He activated the terminal and brought up his schedule. "Lieutenant Kopl-Johnson," he whistled low and shook his head. Her photo definitely did her justice, he decided. Flipping through the other classes, nothing stood out to him much and he ended up turning off the display.

He exhaled sharply as he sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at his reflection in the dark window overlooking space and the station outside.

At 21 years of age, a frame of nearly six and a half feet with a build like professional athlete, Toumun didn't look like a student anymore. He didn't feel like he needed another year of Academy education and that irritated him. He felt resentment sometimes at taking the more difficult officer route over the enlisted program. There would be enlisted personnel here on Elysium that were younger than he was and already had years more real world experience. He wanted to get out into the universe and make a difference.

He shoved his duffel onto the floor and laid back onto the still-crisp bedding.

"Computer, lights, and set a wake up for 08:00 hours."

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Messages & Dark Departures

A Mission Post by Lieutenant JG Shiannah Shannas

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Holodeck 3, SB Gamma

Timeline: MD8, R&R

ON:

Shiannah sat on the edge of the lounger, her bare feet resting on the glistening black sand. She had laid aside her book, a real book rather than a PaDD or screen - the pages faded and dog-eared the leather bound spine faded, cracked and glazed. She touched the leather, feeling it's age. She relaxed as she listened to the waves break across the shore, alien avians fluttered in the shade and shadows beneath heavy leafy canopy, their sighing songs drifting in the warm air...

<"Message coming in for Lt Shiannah Shannas... coded from Cardassia Prime"> the computer broke her chain of thought and, sighing, she tapped her coms to receive the message.

"Show message... Code Shannas Alpha One Six" she muttered.

To one side the peaceful beach scene faded to black then shimmered into the view of a fairly non-descript office apart from a mandala of weapons on the far wall, antique firearms from a wide source of worlds and races. The middle aged Cardassian who stood leaning on the edge of the metal desk was a stranger to Shiannah, massive arms folded over a barrel-like chest. His skin dark and mottled. An old scar ran down the length of his jaw, drawing the Cardassians thin lips into a grimace.

"Greetings Miss Shannas, I am Gul Modek, one-time military commander of the facility on the Cardassian Moon Letau" the Cardassian introduced himself.

Shiannah stood, brushing her loose hair away from her face. By 'facility' Modek was obviously relating to the CIB communications and some-time secret detention centre on the small Cardassian moon Letau Shiannah raised an eyebrow though said nothing as yet.

"I have a message from an old friend... ex-Gul Majon" Modek continued after a pause. "As you may have surmised I was... associated with the CIB and the Cardassian Resistance. I will not beat around the bush, as you humans quaintly put it. Majon is dying and, to be honest, only has a limited time left on this plain. He cannot speak though asked me, as a trusted colleague, to send this message..."

"You may say 'beat around the bush' but so far you've said nothing" Shiannah interrupted, a glass of wine in hand. "What did the old rogue have to say?" she asked, her interest piqued.

"I do not understand this... or how he knows you, a Starfleet Intelligence operative" Modek mused as he stood forward. "Well... a promise is a promise. He simply said this... apart from that you'd know what it meant... He said that Olympus has Arisen?"

Despite the warmth Shiannah felt a sudden chill, and drew a shawl from the lounger.

"Well, that's that and message delivered" the Cardassian mused, rubbing at the scar at his jaw. He looked at Shiannah across the depth of space and countless Light Years then shrugged his broad shoulders. The scene faded back to the beach scene on the holodeck.

"Shit" Shiannah muttered and finished the glass of wine. "End program" she informed the computer and walked, barefoot, across the cold deck of the holodeck her thoughts taking a dark departure...

Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be - Dinner Company

A Mission Post by Lieutenant Commander Dyhei Liducca & Sergeant James Raynar

Mission: Episode 3: Such as we are made of, such we be

Location: Messhall

Timeline: 1830 hours

Jim walked into the messhall after the training program has been tested. Michael had been working on a training regiment for new cadets, and officers. He saw Lt. Liducca sitting by herself. He ordered his chicken cob salad, his iced tea with lemon and went to her table. "Mind if i join you, Lt. ?" He asked.

"Hmm." Responded Dyhei at first, having spent the last ten minutes or so proving at her food rather than eating it, she smiled remembering him from the shuttlebay incident. "Of course, it'd be a bit off to refuse someone who oncentre saved my ass or at least my head. Sergeant Raynar wasn't it?"

Jim smiled at Dyhei than sat down across from her. "Please call me James or Jim, Lieutenant. Sergeant is for battle and I'm pretty sure we're not going to battle here over chicken salad and rice pilaf " he chuckled.

"I guess not." She responded with a smile. "So my names Dyhei, I haven't managed to get a snappy short version as yet, but I guess it's short enough." She added still with a smile, before voicing a conection her mind made. "Jim, huh, puts me in mind of the legendary Captain." With a shrug she moved from random concection to something a little more familiar. "So how things with marine life, quieter and more routine I hope?"

Dyhei seemed out of place here. Almost like she wanted to be somewhere else. "Being a marine means having to be ready for any situation that comes up. Like here, for example. Would you prefer a different setting for lunch, Dyhei?" He asked

"No this is fine, I quite like the lounge." Dyhei responded with a smile, before giving the Marine a questioning look. "What made you think I'd rather be else where?"

Jim was reconsidering what he'd said previously. "Well, it just seemed to me that a more natural setting might make things smoother, but your point is made" he said, reluctantly.

"Okay then," She said, finally tucking onto the souffle in front of her., and deciding to change the tack on the chat to something a little more specific. "So how did you end up aboard the Elysium?"

Jim attacked his lunch with fervor. "I was always adventurous, even at a younger age: constantly exploring, pretending I was on the away team that discovered an uncharted planet, things like that. Marines just seemed to be a natural thing to me " he smiled. "What about you, Dyhei?" He asked

"Yeah i bet you were I right little tearaway, gave your Ma'am and Da'ah no end of worry." She teased with a smile. "For me, stars. The night sky all clear, there's nothing like it. The i found out these people travel through them and observe for the most part. It was a case of 'where do I sign.' years later here I am."

"That's the thing about the stars; we're never quite sure about them. My parents were patient with me growing up. Gave them a few good scared every now and then" he chuckled then absently took Dyhei's hand. "I still want to be that adventurous kid sometimes" he said softly, stroking her hand

"Well you on starship heading out into the Gamma quadrant, I don't think you can get much more adventurous than that." She responded honestly, not quite expecting his hand on hers quite so soon but didn't react just yet. "As for wanting to be a kid again, doesn't everybody at some point to or other." She added with a smile, before looking at the hands and then back up. "Am I going to get my hand back at some point, Jim?"

He glanced down then released her hand. "Sorry Dyhei. Must have been caught up in my memories. You can have it back " he said then cleared his throat. "I just wish we'd get there. This sitting around is gonna make me flabby" he smiled then rolled up his sleeve to reveal a tanned, toned arm with lean muscles.

Dyhei let out a giggle at the blatant display of physical attributes, and the statement to while she responded. "I doubt that, what is it you lads say, 'train hard, fight easy'." She shrugged and looked back to her food as she added. "Anyway i kind of always hope we don't have to use the full range of you capabilities, Ithe always feel like a bit of fail if it comes to that, in my opinion. Not that I don't appreciate having you around, I'm painfully aware it isn't a perfect galaxy."

"Aww. Don't get all sentimental on me, Dyhei. I'm in it for the long haul. Career marine. Train hard. Fight easy. Play hard too" he grinned at her then took another healthy nite.

"Really." She responded with one eyebrow raised and a smirk across her face. "So, 'play hard' involves what exactly?"

Jim grinned at her. She was pretty and he could be inclined to demonstrate his meaning to her. He took her hand again and squeezed it in a playful fashion. "Well, for me, it involves fun, frolic and...." he leaned on to whisper in her ear. "You" he winked.

She turned her head in slightly and still with a smirk replied. "Well you certainly know what you want, but it's gonna take a little it more that a lunch and few smooth comments to get to 'frolic'." She shoak her head and leaned back with a sigh. "Cos I like to play to and you Jimmy Boy need to figure out whats next." Gathering up her tray and items she made to go, "I best be going, I trust I'll be seeing you again?"

Jim grinned at Dyhei mischievous. "Well that's good, Dyhei. You can guaran-damn-tee you'll be seeing me again....*standing and leaning on to look her in the eye* as much of me as you want " Then he kissed her and turned on his heels with his tray. "Ciao for now " he played then flexed his glutes for her.

Dyhei smiled to herself as she turned the opposite way and walked off casting a glance over her shoulder. More than a little giddy about the prospects of another encounter with JImmy Boy.

"I do believe it did, and I've made a note of 'safe' settings in case we need to reset in the future." She responded, not bothering to hide that she felt quite pleased with herself, as she turned her attention back to the point of refining the detection of the blip that had them going to this effort. "I'm setting up a Die-Polar particle filter, applied to the tachyon scan, it should show up atomic.........clumping for want of a better expression, the profile should tell us if this is natural of non-natural." She paused and checked herself. "After all the sensors are up and running of course, I'm reading 90% online and the final 10% pairing, do you read the same?"

Nodding in agreement Lia smiled at Dyhei, "Next time you can re-cycle the main defector dish and sensors Lieutenant, seems as if you have a canny knack there". She giggled slightly, "But no stealing my job, ok?" She was glad it had worked out, and Dyhei seemed a nice person to get to know off duty. "Now reading 100% online, but the port quarter section seems to only be producing 45 to 50% output". Lia looked at her console, "Lieutenant, you reading anything on you readouts? Mine are amber, suggestions?"

ON:

Making a disgruntled sound as she picked up the same reading, Dyhei looked back up. "Well considering the lengths we've gone too with our equipment I don't think it's that." She stated, a little obviously, but it did help to put that source on the back burner, as she turned to alternate possibilities. "But certain types of particle pulses have been know to mess with sensor effectiveness, some natural some not, if you catch my drift."

Lia nodded halfheartedly, "Um yeah I suppose so, what do you reckon is causing it though?" Her console was now bathed in amber warnings, "Bloody hell, other sensors are powering down. Lieutenant, we have major problems here. If we not careful we could loose everything, only the main deflector isn't affected".

"I see it too, that can not be a system or technical hitch it's likely from outside." Dyhei nodded in agreement, a worried frown now starting to crease her features. "Okay I'm isolating two sensor clusters, one port fore, one starboard Aft, I'll remap again. Did you say the deflector was ready to go, I'm thinking we send the pulse out and see what we get."

"Would a pulse from the deflector get a response?" Lia asked, "What ever the problem is, it seems to be with the sensors". She watched as Dyhei proceeded, "Lieutenant, how about we re-align the four corners of the ship so to speak. Front four sensors port and starboard, same at the rear and see what happens?" She hoped her suggestion might help.

"The reason I went with those two was, there not only at opposite ends but opposite sides as well, if the cause is internal fault we can isolate it better, if it's external we'll have a indication of its bearing." Dyhei stated a little definitely, but to her mind enough reason to back up her position.

Dyhei's response didn't sit well with Lia, "I got to be honest and say, I'm not exactly ok with that. But as my strategy was rejected, then carry on". Fault finding on this scale was never Lia's idea of fun, but somehow here she was up to her armpits in sensor readings and failing hardware.

"Okay isolating corner sensors, fore port and aft starboard, commencing remap." Dyhei stated as she'd jumped at the chance to continue with her approach, right now she viewed this whole thing as a process of elimination, if this didn't work she intended to switch to Commander Holmes approach. "Both sensors clusters online, and in the green, okay let's. .............Non, no, no!!!" Dyhei exclaimed as once again amber became the dominated colour. "I've got amber again, but only aft, fore holding in the green, Commander are you seeing the same?"

Nodding her head Lia agreed with Dyhei, "You got that right Lieutenant, my console is amber from around the mid-section. But I appear to be getting some red, the aft sensors are going off-line again". This was getting frustrating, they seem to be going in circles.

Gary listened to the back and forth conversation between Lia and Dyhei, "Ladies, what seems to be the problem?" His voice cool and measured.

"We're headbutting system errors, but some very specific ones, sir." She quipped quickly to the not far away Commander Taylor. Efire turning her attention to the readouts once again,"Commander Holmes I'm going to borrow what you said earlier and continue the remap of all the fore sensors. As for the aft, I'm considering anyeon pulse through the ODN feeds there known to disrupt interference fields, it is know to cause issues to weaken data lines."

Lia looked at Taylor, "I personally think that the Tachyon radiation has something to do with this, I mean radiation overload isn't new. But this beats all, first it goes green then dies on you".

"Is there a possibility that you are getting a false fail ready?" Gary asked.

"No way Commander, we've tried this a half dozen different ways. And still it comes up dead, its like there's a programing bug been placed in the system. And we can't find the damn thing", Lia replied to Taylor.

Gary considered Lia's assessment and thought on it. "Alright if you can't repair, reroute and improvise. We need the sensors up and running." He finally replied

"Okay, so I've isolated a relay or two in each of the aft sensors clusters, they're configured to blast an anyeon pulse through the cluster on restart." Dyhei added, having taken the lack of response as an opening to carry on, she now had a theory ready to test. "I believe you asked for an improvisation, sir."

"Quite right. I did. Lets see how effective your improvisation. Proceed when you are ready Mr. Liducca." Gary replied, subconsciously leaning forward in his seat to see if the Science Chief's improvisation would solve their nagging and troublesome problem with the sensors.

"Well here goes. Re-starting aft sensors clusters." As she hit the keys, a frown Creasing her features and her voice betraying a little annoyance, mode of address and specifically the rigidity of it was always a frustration of hers, but as they had more pressing issues she would let it go for now. "Reading amber status, with remap at six percent." She stated clearly, eyes following the readouts as they climbed slowly. " Now at twenty.........twenty five........thirty." Looking up for conformation, then back down again. "Hitting forty percent, pulse charging, and these fifty percent, pulse activating." The indicator lights flicked to flashing red, then flashing amber, then a solid green for a moment, before each of the the indicators began cycling independently through the three colours. "This is normal......well maybe expected is more the turn of phrase. Give it a few moments to settle." After a kindly utility and a half of a Christmas tree status board it did in fact settle. "Okay so we have four amber at sixty five, fifty five, seventy and ninety percent respectively, with three cluster red, check me."

"Oh for Christ's sake!! What the hell is going on? Lieutenant I'm reading a slow creep towards mid-ships, why the hell won't these sensors remain online". Lia's frustration was becoming louder, "How about we re-route through life support? I mean that seems to be working just fine, can't we just use life support power conduits just to test a section of sensors?"

"I'm inclined to say yes, considering we've just spent the last minutes going round in circles." Dyhei nodded, her face starting show the same frustration as her contemporaries, she like puzzles but she also liked them to have solution and this seemed to be twisting away from them. "Commander Taylor I suspect tapping into a vital system will require command approval, would you be so kind. I promise to abort if it looks like we're going to crash the life support system."

Sitting in his chair, Gary leaned forward and tapped his command code into the computer and thereby allowing Dyhei to use life support conduits to see if she and Lia could get the sensors to remain online. "Your approved Dyhei." He stated simply, "See what you get with this idea."

"Hopefully a lot further on. Connection to bypass circuitry now." She stated, with a slight wrinkle of her face as she considered a certain approach. "Never mind carefully does it, as son as this bypass connects I'm going to roll all our approaches so far into one and dummy them on the midship array. Commander Homes I'd appreciate another set of eyes on progress." She stated firmly as the bypass connection initialized. "In 3......2.....1.....rolling in mods."

The main frame seemed to blink and the sensors flicked to amber, then slowly one after another flicked back to green. "Lieutenant, it would appear our problem has been rectified", Lia looked towards Gary. "For the love of Christ, don't rock the boat Commander", she smiled at Gary as she spoke. Turning to Dyhei she spoke now to her, "Well done Lieutenant, we seem to be back online. At last".
