Raye was not one to beat about the bush, and Gavin knew that well enough. She had made sure he knew that from the start. So she had a question for him. She hit the chime to his cabin. And waited.

Hearing the chime, Gavin got up and went to the door. Opening it he found himself staring at Raye. " Hi Raye! This is an unexpected surprise. Please come in." He said as he stepped back to allow Raye to enter. Once she was inside he shut the door, "So what brings you to my doorstep?"

She stood there almost awkwardly. "You know how the teacher announced that... dance... the thing they call a Sadie Hawkins dance.."

"Yes, I was there Raye." Gavin replied.

"Well... I was wondering, if you..." she shrugged "No big deal if you say no, just so you know... I was wondering if you would like to go to the... dance with me?"

Gavin blinked at her, he was about to say are you joking but he saw the serious look on Raye's face and knew she wasn't. "Absolutely, I would love to go to the dance with you Raye."

She was surprised he had said yes but she gave a choppy nod. "Okay... thanks" she was smiling as she spoke.

"Your welcome Raye and thank you ." He said with an answering smile. "It should be fun."

Her smile firmed a bit more. "So... its in 2 weeks, at 1930. ... do you want to meet there?"

"Two weeks at 1930." He looked at he, "Can't I come by your quarters and get you and we go together?"

Her eyes widened in surprise."Ah sure, if you want to." she said.

Gavin nodded, "Good. Very good. If we're going to a dance, we're going together."

She blushed and nodded. "ok"

Gavin smiled at her, "Didn't mean to make you blush Raye."

"I am not blushing" she replied stepping back slightly. "Its just.. warm in here."

Gavin's smile grew bigger at her comment. "Right Raye, well come into the kitchen and I'll give you a cold drink."

"ah.. I can't.. I am on Babysitting duty today." She hedged as she continued to edge for the door.

Gavin sighed. He knew Raye was being less than truthful with him but decided not to push it. He replied with a simple "Okay." But inside it hurt as he was confused. Raye asked to go to a dance with her but becomes uncomfortable when asked to have a cool drink. "Well, don't let me keep you from your babysitting duty. You don't want to be late."

Raye gave another choppy nod and then paused. "I'll.. see you at school"

"Right. See you at school Raye. Thanks for coming by and asking me." Gavin replied honestly.

"a.. its.. nothing" she stammered and dove out the door.

Gavin watched her leave, shaking his head as she did. "Strange girl but I like her." He said to himself before closing the door and thinking not for the first time, if he would ever understand women.
