Estelle, sitting behind a makeshift desk and having an impromptu lunch with Julia, looked up at at the noise of a door slamming open, something she was unaccustomed to with all the automatic doors of starship life. "You're a doctor?!" a man stormed in.
"I'm a surgeon, yes", Estelle said calmly. "What's the matter?"
"Come with me", he demanded.
"What's happened?" Estelle asked. She wasn't getting up just yet.
"I need supplies and your lot out there won't give me any. And you know what to hand out", he said.
"They're not my supplies to give, you see", Estelle explained. "Julia and I are assisting the medical staff here by lending two extra pairs of hands."
The excited man lost his patience and drew a long blade, shoving it in Estelle's face. "Come with me now."
Taken aback, Estelle looked down at the blade, then up at him. "That knife's not going to do any good. It's not even properly sharp."
"It's a dirk", he corrected her, apparently she had hit a point of pride.
"My apologies. It's not surgical, I'm not up to date with all the technical terms." She looked at Julia. "Would you go fetch someone who can dole out supplies so we can get this settled?"
"No, stay!" he barked.
"Listen, if you want your stuff, and I'm willing to help you here, you're going to have to let us get organised", Julia said. "Just don't do anything rash, okay?"
"Hurry up, then!"
Julia did, rushing out of the barracks in search of someone who could help.
"Why don't you put that knife down?" Estelle asked calmly.
"Dirk!"
"Why don't you put that dirk down?" Estelle asked in the exact tone of voice. "You might hurt me with it, and stabbing a surgeon during a medical crisis won't help at all, now will it?"
He waved it around in front of her face. "You'll see how much it'll help if I don't get the supplies I need." He reached for a PADD he was carrying in his back pocket and waved that in front of her face instead.
"I appreciate replacing your kn... dirk with the PADD, but at the rate it's moving I can't read a single word", Estelle said.
The door opened and Julia came back, with another woman, Corporal Lott. When Estelle saw the marine, she asked. "Kindly get this man to leave, will you?"
Mona rushed forward and went for the knife. Disarming him wasn't a problem for the trained marine. She took the dirk and smashed its tip right through the man's PADD. "If you don't get out of here, you'll get this right up you and you will not like it!" she threatened.
The man went pale and backed off, then ran out the door.
Smiling, Mona turned to Estelle. "They don't like the cold steel, sir. Most of them cannot countenance it. They don't like it up 'em."
"Thank you, Corporal", Estelle said, breathing out. Looking at her lunch. "Would you like some of this? I seem to have lost my appetite."
