Camryn Steps Up

Thor was talking to his wife in his office.

“Athena,” Thor says with a smile, “I have found your replacement as Assistant Chief of Engineering. We had several to chose from but the one we decided on is Camryn Shepard. I think it came down to this. If anything ever happened to me God forbid, she would be the one to carry on as the Chief.”

Athena nodded. “I totally agree. Now I can concentrate on being a mother to our children. The two children are challenging and we were relying on help from others but as a mother, this is best.”

Thor stood up from his seat which prompted Athena to do as well. “Hello Camryn. Please come in.”

Cam stood outside for what seemed to be a long time. However, to a part El Aurian, time is meaningless. Tucking in her uniform and touching her hair, making sure no strands were left unchecked. She hadn’t been this nervous since Captain Barkley’s graduation ceremony. And no, Captain Barkley was her half brother’s Targ. He made sure his Targ was included in everything and she loved him. The Targ, of course. Her half brother could be cranky at times without his Rakinjino.

The door opened as she entered through the doorway of Thor’s office. Looking at both officers, she placed her hands behind her back and replied, “Sir. Ma’am.”

Stopping right there, she wondered with curiosity what they wanted her for. It’s been nearly a year since she’s been onboard as her engineer. She hadn’t had a chance to meet and get to know a lot of her fellow officers, especially the chief. Meeting with him felt important and a good impression lasts especially on a long way home.

“Camryn,” Thor says in his kind voice said, “As you know wife Athena here is the Assistant Chief of Engineering but now she is stepping down from that position due to demands of motherhood , especially the second child. We prayed on it and we came to the conclusion she will step down.”

Athena takes over the conversation. “We had several choices and you stood out. You have a gift of finding gremlins in the ship as Thor calls the issues. So please say yes.”

Camryn nodded, "I'd be honored. Whatever you need me to do."

To be sure, taking more responsibility meant ensuring the efficiencies of the warp core and other engineering aspects of the Elysium. As they said, she does have the ability to "find gremlins" because a part of her listens, not just to people, but the inner workings of technology.

Athena says, “We are about to go into Slipstream , so are you comfortable working from a console in Engineering or on the bridge. Personally, I worked from the bridge while Thor works in Engineering.”

Cam thought for a few moments, considering her options. While she might be best suited to be on the bridge, she would rather be in engineering just in case they might need assistance. She nodded, "Either one works for me. I am comfortable working on the bridge if you need me there."

"If they request us on the bridge, you can go," Thor responded.

Athena says, "Hope one day to see you as a chief and maybe even Captain."

Camryn nodded. “Thank you. I will take my place on the bridge.”

What Athena said, Cam would have to think. It’s still some time away before she could accept a command. She’s still young. However the thought was appreciated. She smiled.
