The lighting in the Ready Room was soft, the stars casting a faint glow as the Commodore turned from the viewport. “Commander—thanks for coming.” She gestured toward the chairs. “Please—tea? Coffee?”
"Some Andorian The would be delightful, Commodore," he said, taking a seat.
Once seated, she folded her hands loosely around her cup, thoughtful but relaxed. “This is more curiosity than anything else.”
A small pause. “What’s caught your attention lately? Anything interesting… or concerning… that hasn’t quite made it into a report yet?”
"Nothing new," N'vok said. "We still have a huge backlog of data and samples that we are working through. I could have ten times as much staff as I currently have and we would still be behind. That being said, it is fascinating and productive work, but there is so much of it."
"Have you reached out to the cadets? We have a number of science Cadets that may be able to assist." Phoenix suggested.
"That is a good thought, rope them in, give them some practical experience," said N'vok. "Perhaps we could rotate the other cadets through as well? Give them a chance to see what the science department does."
Phoenix nodded. "That would work, they may not have a science officer with them on away missions. I am sure the Academy would be open to such things. Now despite that backlog, are your team taking their needed leave?"
"I will coordinate with the Academy direction aboard ship," says N'vok, producing a datapad and making a note. He returned his attention to Phoenix. "How that we have somewhere to go, I do not see that being a problem. I have been doing my best to ensure that the science team rotates between tasks to keep in communication with each other and see what else is being worked on. A change of perspective is often mentally refreshing."
"Good. I want to make sure everyone is taking the leave they need." Phoenix said. "We do not know how long it will be until we get another chance at leave."
N'vok nodded. "That has been a recurring problem with our current situation."
"Indeed. Which is why I am checking on these things. I want the crew to take the rest they can when they can. Burnout is a thing in normal situations but this is anything but."
N'vok nods. "One does not live by science alone, as it were," he says. "I will make sure that everyone, including myself, takes advantage of this opportunity."
"That's good. if people need more holodeck time you let me know. I will organize it. Maybe at our next stop we can arrange a bit of shore leave for everyone."
"Thank you, Commodore," said N'vok. "We will do our best to use the time allotted to us efficiently."
"I am sure you will" She smiled. "I know that your department is busy so I want you to make sure you keep me updated."
"We do our best, Commodore," said N'vok. "If we have missed anything let me know and I will seek to be more dilligent in the future."
Phoenix nodded. "Thank you I will."
