SCIENCE DEPARTMENT BRIEFING
EREBUS INITIATIVE — ZYPHERA PRIME SUMMIT
Classification: Mission Essential
Distribution: Science Department
Date: 11 August 2398
MISSION OVERVIEW
The USS Elysium has accumulated sufficient scientific information to produce the first viable theoretical model for an artificial trans-galactic aperture.
The proposed system has been designated:
EREBUS — Trans-Galactic Aperture Initiative
Erebus is NOT presently capable of transporting Elysium directly to the Milky Way.
Current modelling suggests a direct transit across approximately thirteen million light-years would be unstable.
The objective is instead to create a controlled aperture capable of moving Elysium across a substantial portion of that distance, potentially establishing an exit corridor from which conventional or other advanced propulsion could eventually complete the journey.
CURRENT SCIENTIFIC BASIS
The Erebus model incorporates information gathered throughout Elysium's time in Circinus, including:
- Sensor telemetry from the Thaih'ea transit structure.
- Historical data concerning USS Archeron and Thaih'ea intergalactic transportation.
- Federation warp-field theory.
- Quantum Slipstream Drive data.
- Romulan subspace and power research.
- Information recovered from Borg survivor Two of Eight concerning transwarp principles and the collapse of the Borg transwarp network that stranded Cube 696 in Circinus.
- Circinus stellar and navigational observations.
- Rin'thar spatial geometry.
- Varn power-generation models.
- Ael'ven structural and resonance models.
- Zypheran harmonic field-regulation technology.
RIN'THAR CONTRIBUTION
Rin'thar spatial science does not model stellar objects solely by position.
Their calculations incorporate gravitational, subspace, temporal and stellar relationships across extremely large distances.
This has provided Science with a method of interpreting aspects of the Thaih'ea transit data that Federation mathematical models previously failed to resolve.
Their calculations currently form the basis of Erebus aperture geometry.
VARN CONTRIBUTION
The primary obstacle following development of a viable aperture model was energy.
Varn power-generation theory indicates the required energy is achievable.
Their technology is therefore expected to form a major component of any Erebus initiation system.
AEL'VEN CONTRIBUTION
Early simulated structures failed almost immediately under projected subspace stresses.
Ael'ven material science and resonance modelling substantially increased structural survival.
Their science treats matter, energy and stress as interacting harmonic systems rather than isolated engineering disciplines.
ZYPHERAN CONTRIBUTION
The current design combines technologies that were never intended to operate together.
Zypheran harmonic-regulation technology has demonstrated the ability to stabilise interactions between those systems.
This produced the first sustained theoretical Erebus aperture.
SCIENCE OBJECTIVES DURING SUMMIT
Science personnel should be prepared to:
- Explain Federation scientific principles without unnecessarily disclosing restricted technology.
- Compare independent Circinus scientific models.
- Validate or challenge proposed aperture calculations.
- Examine the potential biological, temporal, gravitational and subspace effects of Erebus.
- Determine appropriate exit-distance parameters.
- Investigate whether repeated aperture generation could permanently affect local subspace.
- Identify warning signs of aperture instability.
- Establish what data must be collected before construction can safely begin.
QUESTIONS CURRENTLY UNANSWERED
Science should NOT assume the following have been solved:
What exists inside the transit corridor?
Can living organisms safely pass through it?
Does transit occur instantaneously from an external perspective?
Could temporal displacement occur?
How accurately can an exit point be selected?
What happens if the aperture collapses while a vessel is in transit?
Can the aperture be opened from only one side?
Could someone elsewhere detect an activation?
Could another vessel enter the aperture without authorisation?
Could Erebus interact with the phenomenon that originally displaced Elysium?
Could Erebus attract the attention of something already using similar transit mechanisms?
SECURITY NOTE
Thaih'ea transit technology forms part of the scientific foundation of Erebus.
There are indications unknown parties are already searching commercial networks for information concerning Thaih'ea transit structures.
Treat detailed Erebus technical data accordingly.
DEPARTMENTAL PRINCIPLE
We have demonstrated that the mathematics can work.
We have not demonstrated that the universe will cooperate.
