Welcome to the USS Elysium's Starfleet Academy LCARS.
Here you will find information relating to Academy life, cadet orientation, course structures, core studies, majors, minors and the wider Academy course catalogue.
Life at Starfleet Academy is demanding and designed to prepare cadets for the wide range of challenges they may encounter in Starfleet service.
Cadets are required to study a wide range of disciplines, from statistical mathematics and warp field theory to exophilosophy.
Most Starfleet cadets complete a four-year Academy programme, with one year often spent on assignment in the field.
Some Starfleet career paths require longer periods of study. Medical officers, for example, may undertake extended academic and professional training beyond the standard cadet programme.
Starfleet Academy is commanded by a Superintendent responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the institution.
Much of the teaching staff consists of experienced Starfleet officers assigned to instructional duties.
Over the years, highly respected officers such as Captain Spock and Admiral Owen Paris have accepted teaching posts, while serving officers such as Lieutenant Uhura have chaired seminars in their areas of expertise.
The Academy also attracts leading civilian academics from throughout the Federation. Professor Richard Galen, one of the foremost archaeologists of his generation, spent several years teaching at the Academy.
Academy training is intended to prepare cadets for situations they may encounter during Starfleet's mission of exploration. Cadets therefore receive extensive practical, tactical and survival instruction alongside their academic studies.
Tactical training includes the use of simulators capable of recreating starship bridge environments, while cadets may also spend time aboard operational vessels assigned to Academy training duties.
Starfleet Academy places considerable value on competitive sportsmanship, teamwork and personal development.
Cadets participate in a range of sporting activities including the Academy marathon, wrestling and Parrises squares.
Jean-Luc Picard was the first freshman to win the Starfleet Academy marathon.
Academic competition is also encouraged, and exceptional cadets may be rewarded with special duties and prestigious assignments. Flight team positions, for example, are generally reserved for the Academy's most promising cadets.
Course structures and training pathways may vary according to a cadet's chosen career field, specialist requirements and Starfleet assignment.
