Character Background
| Personal History | The woman known as Jaeih was found as a baby mere days old in a small survival pod on the federation side of the neutral zone in 2366 by the USS Inamoto, a cruiser patrolling the federation’s side of the boarder. The baby was wrapped in a dark red blanket with the words ‘Jaeih t’Noramei’ written on it in gold embroidery. Believing this to be the baby girls name, the captain and crew called her such and took her back to earth to see if anything could be learned about her. The baby’s strange genetics led them to a colony known as Dryadic, where they matched her maternal genetics to a family whose daughter had been lost 3 years before on a mission along the neutral zone. The young human, named Sofia Halina had been an operations officer on the USS Carlyle before its destruction and crew’s disappearance. But the Halina family refused to have anything to do with the baby girl so she was raised by Commander Edward McKinley, the executive officer of the Inamoto and his wife Jolene who already had a one year old son. Jaeih grew up with her older brother and younger sister without many issues, preferring to be known as full human rather than half Romulan. It was well known that she was adopted and she never had any issues within the family or with those she met. Until at the age of 16 she and her family moved to Earth. There, She found herself looked down by her classmates because it had become known that she was part Romulan. Finding that she was not accepted for the first time in her life was hard on the young girl and she slowly withdrew from her family, causing concern and worry in the family. Withdrawing to the point where she was barely eating Jaeih was hospitalized by her family for a suspected eating disorder. She spent 6 months in rehabilitation and even then only gained back half of the weight she lost. After rehab Jaeih applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted thanks to the sponsorship of Captain Jeremy Hardens, former CO of the Inamoto. Separated again from her family, Jaeih kept to herself and worked hard in her classes at the academy. Making little in the way of friends she graduated within the top 30% of her class, though she did not feel too bad about not graduating at the top of her class. She took 6 months leave before being assigned to the USS Stryker as an operations officer. She stayed on the Stryker for 2 years without much notice until the annual promotions came around and she found herself not just promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade but transferred to Outpost 6 as a Starbase Operations Officer. She languished there for a year, in total boredom. Until the USS Inamoto came by on patrol. The current captain was close to Jaeih’s adopted father and her older brother Samuel was the chief of security. She found herself being transferred to the USS Inamoto, a ship she had once called home for 16 years. Content, she and Samuel spent a lot of time together, as they had not seen each other for any length of time since 2382. In 2392, she was promoted to full Lieutenant and given the posting of Assistant chief of Operations though rumours abounded that it was because she was the sister of the new XO that she got the post. Determined to prove that wrong, she put in for a transfer. She got a transfer in 2394 to the USS Elysium as Chief of Operations |

| Medical Review | Jaeih has a recorded history of Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa, their definitions are below. Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion. Individuals with anorexia often control body weight by voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. It primarily affects young adolescent girls in the Western world and has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric condition, with approximately 10% of people diagnosed with the condition eventually dying due to related factors. Anorexia nervosa is a complex condition, involving psychological, neurobiological, and sociological components. Anorexia is a life threatening condition that can put a serious strain on many of the body’s organs and physiological resources. A recent review of the scientific literature outlined a number of reliable findings in this area. Anorexia puts a particular strain on the structure and function of the heart and cardiovascular system, with slow heart rate (bradycardia) and elongation of the QT interval seen early on. People with anorexia typically have a disturbed electrolyte balance, particularly low levels of phosphate, which has been linked to heart failure, muscle weakness, immune dysfunction, and ultimately death. Those who develop anorexia before adulthood may suffer stunted growth and subsequent low levels of essential hormones (including sex hormones) and chronically increased cortisol levels. Osteoporosis can also develop as a result of anorexia in 38-50% of cases, as poor nutrition leads to the retarded growth of essential bone structure and low bone mineral density. Changes in brain structure and function are early signs of the condition. Enlargement of the ventricles of the brain is thought to be associated with starvation, and is partially reversed when normal weight is regained. Anorexia is also linked to reduced blood flow in the temporal lobes, although since this finding does not correlate with current weight, it is possible that it is a risk trait rather than an effect of starvation. Bulimia nervosa, more commonly known as bulimia, is an eating disorder. It is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by an intentional purging. This purging is done in order to compensate for the excessive intake of the food and to prevent weight gain. Purging typically takes the form of vomiting; inappropriate use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics or other medication; excessive physical exercise; or fasting. New research suggests that some sufferers may have a hormonal imbalance of testosterone; however, this research is in its early stages. |
