Personality & Traits

General Overview Rin is matter-of-fact and prefers for things to be orderly, although she accepts that things frequently are not.

She tends to cultivate a few close friends rather than large social circles, and she can have difficulty forming initial bonds.

She is highly analytical and enjoys processing data and pulling meaningful conclusions from it, which is why intelligence officer was deemed the most appropriate placement for her. She continues to cross-train with other departments in order to perform more effectively in a variety of situations.

Her manner is generally formal, clinical and professional, particularly on-duty, although she continues to work on more informal mannerisms on her off hours.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Strong sense of integrity, dedication to duty, highly protective of others, ability to multi-task, functions well under pressure, detail-oriented.

Weaknesses: Difficulty forming attachments, difficulties understanding others’ emotions if they seem illogical or impractical, tends to judge things according to probability of success, fails to recognize the importance of her own needs and wants.
Ambitions Rin strives to be the best she can be, not because she wants recognition or advancement, but because she wishes to succeed at her purpose.
Hobbies & Interests Rin is constantly introducing herself to new topics, although she only occasionally finds something to dedicate herself to. She has cultivated a particular interest in music. She privately plays the violin as a way of expressing her emotions musically while enjoying the logic of musical tones. She enjoyed studying languages in Academy and continues to do so. She regularly practices meditations taught to her by the Tavari. She also enjoys martial arts, some of which is meditative (like tai chi).

Character Background

Personal History Rin, born Nicola Lynd, grew up aboard Starfleet vessels with both of her parents. By the time she was an adult, she had set her sights on Starfleet as well, focusing on tactical operations.

She married James Addison, a fellow cadet, six months before graduation, so they could be assigned together. However, James was on an extended away mission when the USS London was recalled to Wolf 359. All hands were officially lost.

Rin spent the next 17 in the Collective as One of Six. In deep space, her cube encountered an unknown entity which psychically disrupted the drones, which were then quarantined from the wider Collective. Many of the drones went mad. Some regained some sense of individuality and remained partially sane. Others attempted to follow through on the last orders given, which was to destroy the cube.

Rin and others gathered as many drones as they could convince to flee the cube. They landed on the first world they found, the remote world of Tavara. They had to put down some of their own, but the remaining stable drones found sanctuary among the Tavari, who had the medical capabilities to remove some of their implants. Rin’s communicator was found under the removed implants, but the world was not known to the Federation, so the symbol meant nothing.

Without memories of her old life, she took the name Rin and became a personal assistant and bodyguard of the local governor, who had originally been instrumental in protecting the drones, now collectively referred to as the Free.

When Starfleet made first contact several years later, Rin recognized the communicator symbol and asked to return with them, in the hopes of understanding who she was. Genetic tests identified her as Nicola Addison. She eventually asked to return to Starfleet, and she was assigned as an intelligence officer.

Medical and Psychological Information

Medical Review The majority of her Borg implants have been removed. The remaining technology is necessary for survival or could not safely be removed. They are not considered a danger to herself or others. Rin exhibits the enhanced strength and stamina common among xBs.

Because of this, she is vulnerable to effects which disrupt sufficiently high levels of technology.

Does not need an alcove in which to recharge but continues to need to periodically connect with a power supply.

She retains her neural interface, allowing her to silent communicate with other xBs in the vicinity.
Allergies/Health Issues None
Counseling Review Fragments of Rin’s memories from before assimilation return sporadically, but it is unlikely she will ever recover a sense of her former self. For this reason, she does not identify with her birth name nor her married name. She recognizes the pain this puts her relatives through, and she regrets she cannot do more to mitigate it.

She continues to identify primarily with her time on Tevara and being among the Free, and she prefers to use to her name from that time, being addressed formally as [Rank] Rin and informally simply as Rin.

She attempts socialization and continues to improve in this area. This poses a challenge when she is reassigned as she is removed from one support network and needs to establish a new one. Her usual coping mechanism is to focus on work and studies.

Rin understands the value of cooperation in the name of the common good. She views the interactions of people within the Federation, Starfleet and individual ships as their own form of collective and values her place within them.
