Personality & Traits

General Overview Captain Samuel Woolheater is a Starfleet Marine. Boot camp toughened him, sniper school honed him, and officer training carved him into the kind of leader who doesn’t flinch when the heat’s on. He learned early how to take charge, move the line, and get people home alive, and that edge never dulled.

Woolheater brings the same raw steadiness to every operation: overwatch, interdiction, boarding, or the kind of dirty work Marines are called for when no one else can carry it. He’s broad-shouldered, scruffy, and carved from muscle and willpower — a man with blue eyes that don’t miss much and a Georgia/West Texas drawl with Pacifican charm that lands calm even when everything else is chaos.

He’s approachable, quick with a grin, and steady in a fight. To fellow Marines, he’s the officer who’ll walk point, shoulder the weight, and make the hard calls. Woolheater doesn’t posture — he doesn’t need to. He’s got the ethos of the Corps in his blood, and a reputation for living it: mission first, people always.
Strengths & Weaknesses Personality Type: ESTJ-A

Samuel Woolheater is confident, assertive, and anchored by the ethos of the Corps. Focus and ambition drive him, but it’s his emotional resilience and natural charisma that connect him to people. He’s steady in the face of pressure, more inclined to think before acting than to react on impulse, and he believes camaraderie and teamwork are the backbone of every successful operation. His presence inspires trust — the kind of leader others want at their shoulder when things go bad.

Religion: Catholic
Sam was raised Catholic, and though combat and loss eroded his faith in the Church, ritual and tradition still anchor him. He calls himself lapsed, but in quiet moments the Latin prayers and cadence of old hymns remain a steadying force. On his dog tags, archaic as they are in today's 25th century, he still lists himself as "Catholic". His parents remain more devout, and his faith—or lack of practice—is often a quiet point of contention with his father, George.
Strengths

Leadership: Inspires confidence and unity, keeping Marines focused on mission and each other.
Tactical Expertise: Sharpshooter and strategist; comfortable making the call under fire.
Charisma: A warm smile, quick wit, and calm voice that can lower the temperature in a tense room.
Adaptability: Capable of shifting gears as missions demand, without losing sight of the bigger picture.

Weaknesses & Limitations
Anger: Loyalty to the Corps and the Federation can make him stubborn when confronting institutional flaws.
Fear of Loss: Beneath the bravado, he quietly fears making a call that costs Marines their lives.
Ambitions Long term, Woolheater aims to keep climbing the ladder of Marine leadership — more responsibility, bigger teams, tougher missions. He’s driven to prove himself as a commander who can bring Marines back alive and keep the Corps’ reputation razor sharp. In the near term, his focus is on sharpening his edge: tighter shots, cleaner ops, and leading from the front without compromise.

Off duty, he still dreams of having a working-dog partner — Alaskan Malamute, German Shepherd, maybe a Husky. Cats are fine, too, but let’s be honest: Sam’s a dog man at heart.
Hobbies & Interests Sports: Baseball, Parrises Squares, rugby, snorkeling, water polo, and Velocity. He rides repulsorlift (anti-grav) motorbikes off-road; favorite maker: the hand-built Rinaldi Repulsorlift Motors Company on Fontalis.
Adventure: Pacifica kid at heart — water, surf, sailing. Hunting, fishing, camping when he can disappear for a weekend. The Kosst Spire for sub-orbital jump thrills.
Relaxation: Barbecue on the beach, a fire, whiskey, long talks under the stars, and scorched marshmallows.
Opera (quietly): 18th–19th-century Earth: Handel, Purcell, Rossini, Puccini, Verdi. Sam plays the trumpet. He doesn’t lead with it. Shh.!

Likes:
LOVES being a Marine! Likes everything about this life. It's structure it's respect and it's personal dignity. Loves sports. Especially baseball! Sam would love to get a team together and play a few games.

Dislikes:
He dislikes people who are hesitant or doubt themselves. He dislikes arrogant people. He hates indecision and he really hates the Borg. He hates seeing people suppressed, in servitude or suffer under dictatorial governments. That is part of why he wanted to be a Marine. To make a difference in the lives of people who can no longer help themselves.

Character Background

Personal History Born on Pacifica to George and Emma, he is their second child. His father is a line worker at the Starfleet Underwater Craft Labs. His mother, a cook for the local Jail. Sam has three siblings. Matthew is the eldest at 38. Hannah, aged 35, his only sister is very lovely and works for the Federation Colonial Government in the Council Administrator’s Office. Benjamin, the third child, aged 30 owns his own Repulsorlift shop on Pacifica. Sam, the youngest at 27 gets along with his family OK. There is tension with his father though.

Pacifica was hard hit by the Borg invasion. He almost lost both his parents during the attack when he was younger and it was Starfleet Marines who fought bitterly in the defense of the colony. A battalion of Marines has been stationed on the planet to provide extra security. As a young boy Sam had a real respect for that and it was a childhood dream to grow up to be a Starfleet Marine. His first posting was to the USS MANLEY a science and research vessel that had a platoon of Marines aboard providing security. It was not how he anticipated starting his career. The MANLEY was not a ship to see “action” on. It was a research vessel. As such it was cataloguing and tagging known astronomical markers and various archaeological finds for further study. However, on one occasion some of the crew of the MANLEY were on a routine mapping survey. Some “freedom fighters” from the planet they were studying took some of the survey team as hostages until their planetary government acceded to their demands. They did not and the survey team was in danger. The called the Marines and the 107th came to answer the call. It was tense for a while, but they went in and rescued the survey team, disabled the “freedom fighters” from the base camp and restored the order of the place. There were no injuries and no fatalities. It was a textbook example of how to “negotiate” a hostage situation. For that, he was given a recommendation to a larger posting and a command. He put in a transfer request hoping to get posted to the USS TAURUS. Instead, he was posted to a land based colony called HYPATIA.

Medical and Psychological Information

Medical Review As far as Marines go, Sam has weathered his career pretty well. Not an unusual amount of broken bones. Nor are there any unusual diseases that he has survived. Medically fit for duty with no major issues.
Allergies/Health Issues Sam is allergic to bullshit. In his record one will find that he commented that a certain Commanding Officer that lost a marine away team was to and I quote, "...someone needs to remind the CO not to move around too much in his chair on the bridge - lest he squash his brains."

No medical issues - just the usual "wear and tear" for a guy in his thirties.
Counseling Review Excerpt from Starfleet Medical Psych Report:

Samuel R. Woolheater has a sound mind and effective leadership qualities. After extensive psyche mapping and standardized tests it has been determined that he suffers from self-doubt and some debilitating indecisiveness. This does not impair his ability to command others. It does however, not allow him to give himself the permission to make mistakes or to forgive himself for being human. This borders on manic perfection. At this time, this does not warrant treatment. However, it is the opinion of this evaluation that if progress is not made treatment will become necessary as said by the attending posts Chief Medical Officer. In addition, there is a slight imbalance of the neuro-transmitters which is causing a chemical imbalance in the subjects’ brain. The diagnosis is moderate clinical depression. Regular treatment is recommended for this Marine and will be included to the posts CMO. At this time, no impairment or debilitating functions can be noted. The subject is PASSED with a recommendation for routine checkups on the brain chemistry and regular psyche evaluations by the posts Counselor.
