| General Overview | Helias is unusual for a betazoid, a species known for their gregarious nature. He is rather introverted and prefers the company of just a few friends. Large crowds make him uncomfortable, although his service and training in Starfleet have desensitized him of this somewhat. On duty, he is professional and quick thinking. Off duty, intimates get to see his dark sense of humor contrasted against his kind heart. He enjoys ballet, opera, space yachting and yacht races, and of course learning about new or alien technologies. The person who knows him best isn’t a person…yet. Maven Standiford is an AI who is embedded in a briefcase-sized mobile emitter. She travels with Helias, filling the role of big sister and their relationship is very typical of siblings. |

Character Background
| Personal History | Helias was born on the Betazoid colony planet of Darona during the Dominion Occupation of 2374. His mother Dorvaela had joined a resistance group who had taken refuge in the marshes of Darona’s Veseros islands a few months prior. Left to have him with no doctor, nurse, or medical equipment, Dorvaela passed away mere hours later. Helias himself would have passed away, but another new mother nursed him and cared for him alongside her own baby. Three months later, Betazed ousted their Dominion oppressors and the Federation humanitarian organizations were finally able to do what they do best. After unsuccessfully looking for a possible father or other family (all had passed away in the invasion) Helias was placed up for adoption. A human couple from Earth’s Luxembourg became the adoptive parents for the Betazoid. Phillipe Sauvageon was a designer of small luxury Space-Yachts, while his wife Sabella served as the engineering architect. The pair were positively thrilled with their adoptive son, and took steps to encourage him to embrace his cultural heritage. The family were regular guests at Betazed’s Earth Embassy, and took several trips to Betazed and Darona. When Helias was of age, he was enrolled in primary school at the Betazoid compound. This proved key, as otherwise he would have struggled more to adapt when he began experiencing the empathic and telepathic sensations his species is known for. It was also during this time that Helias began learning about Engineering from Sabella. She told him that anyone could engineer from behind a computer, using all new parts and equipment. Helias found in engineering a retreat from the strong emotions and thoughts of others. People were complex, needing so much emotional support and humans were especially frustrating. They often regarded his abilities as invasive of their privacy. Never bothering to imagine that it was their consciousness’ invading his thoughts against his will. But when Sabella would take him to some scrapyard or other and tell him to fix a shuttle or repair a piece of technology, there was something therapeutic in the work. Joining Starfleet was the easiest decision Helias had ever made. He loved his adoptive parents, and had grown fond of Earth. But the opportunities service to the fleet offered were too good to pass up. |
