Character Background
Personal History | Joachim Neander Singh was born on Empyrean Colony, an old and distant Earth Colony. Empyrean Colony was one of the first colonies, created when a warp 2 colony ship got caught in a subspace eddy and was flung deep into the, at the time, unknown regions of the outer Alpha Quadrant. The ship was able to land on an M class planet orbiting a pair of dark brown dwarf stars. These stars provided just enough heat for the planet to be M class, but it was always dark and cold. The people of this planet would learn to survive on less, their eyesight diminishing due to the low light conditions, blindness would be very common. Many generations had passed since that arrival when Joachim Neander Singh was born. He, like many of the colony, was born blind. He spent much of his early life listening, listening to the stories told by his elders, listening to the hardships of the world and the pain of those who he cared for. He was 12 when his brother died, he was tending to the animals one night and died of hypothermia for unknown reasons, he was found a few miles outside of the village naked. Observing the way those around him dealt with the pain and grief of the incident would lead him toward wanting to care for others, to guide them through their pain. When he was old enough, about 17 in terms of Earth Solar cycles, he would submit his application to the University of Betazed. He would leave his home planet and travel the long distance, almost 3 months on a warp transport ship, to Betazed. He would find the journey interesting, though he did have some difficulty adapting. On his homeworld things were built for both the sighted and the blind, he found the ships and technology off of his homeworld much less convenient to use. On Betazed he was pleased to find his classes interesting and challenging enough to keep him interested. He would get 2 degrees, one in Clinical Psychology and one in Cognitive Psychology. When deciding where to practice after he graduated, it was Starfleet that offered him the most interesting options. He barely made it into Starfleet, his more frail and thin frame had a hard time meeting the physical requirements of the Academy Program. With some effort he did make it into the program and would work his way through the various programs of the Medical Track of the Academy, focusing heavily on his skills to act as Ship's Counselor. After graduation, he would work on a number of different ships over a number of years. Transfers were rare, but not totally uncommon in the Counseling Department and were mostly to keep the chain of command intact in the case of promotion. When he was transferred he did his best to ensure any members of the crew he was working with were left in the best possible hands, believing mental health was key to the running of a neat and orderly ship and though the change was inevitable, it should be handled with a degree of care. |

Medical and Psychological Information
Medical Review | Underweight and sickly. If his condition was not completely stable most doctors would put him under the care of a specialist. His symptoms look a lot like Ehlers–Danlos syndrome with prenatal blindness caused by genetic anomalies in his DNA as a result of adaptation to a hostile world. Further study into this variance would be needed to see the extent. | |
Allergies/Health Issues | Symptoms similar in nature to Ehlers–Danlos syndrome Prenatal Blindness |
|
Counseling Review | Mentally sound, though emotionally detached. No further counseling recommended. |
