Character Background

Personal History Carter was born into a family that has served in Starfleet for generations. His parents both served aboard the USS Franklin. He was the ship's first officer and she the assistant Chief Medical Officer.
His sister met her husband while working at Starfleet Command in San Francisco. She was an assistant to Admiral Crawford. Her husband was a tech working in the engineering section.
Family history says that there was a Carter who worked in every ship named Enterprise. Some were engineers, some were security and some were doctors.
Carter and Jennifer were born at Starfleet Medical. Their parents were on leave when they decided to come into the world early. For the record, Carter is the oldest, by 2 minutes. 3 months after birth, Carter accompanied his parents back to the Franklin.
Carter knew the Franklin inside and out. When he was old enough, he was allowed to work in various sections of the ship with the crew, except for security. There he learned as much as he could absorb and with hands on experience.
When the time came, Carter applied to the Academy and was accepted.
Service Record Everything they taught at the Academy, he already knew. And what he didn't know, he listened and learned.
His grades were excellent, and he was fast on his way to being the valedictorian of his graduating class, when the accident happened.
His class were on a training mission in an old Miranda class ship, the USS Liberty. They were running through a series of simulations, when the console Carter was assigned to exploded, sending shrapnel into his left eye.
Damage to the eye was extensive. The doctors were unable to save the eye. The doctors tried to grow a new eye using cells from the damaged eye, but it was unsucessful.
So the doctors put in a ocular replacement. The replacement would give him full vision, and it also allowed him to see changes in body temperture, faulty circuits, distances...everything that a tricorder would do, his new eye could do.
Carter had to undergo physical therapy as well and counseling sessions. He also had to learn how to use the eye and limit it's use. The eye was tied into his brain, and if he used it too much, he could experience headaches, and blackouts...and maybe eve death.
Doing the therapies meant he wouldn't graduate with his class.
It meant a full 2 years before graduating.
Once his therpies were completed, he graduated and was assigned to USS Elysium as an engineering officer.
