Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Rani has a strong sense of right and wrong but her religious beliefs are spread between those she was given as a child and those which she came to develop as life and cynicism eroded away at the cornerstones. She has a bright, strong, sunny, optimistic nature that she was born with, which is always wanting to see the good and positive in everything, but that is now at odds with her more recently acquired wounded side that sees criticism and judgement in the eyes of those around her, and which bears her own parents' rejection of her with pained self-depreciation on occasions, but defiant rebellion on others. Half-betazoid, she is empathic and was trained in childhood to master the basics of mind-walls to manage this ability. Rani's trademark smile is shy and pretty and her eyes are warm and honest, as is her heart. Her hair and her personal life on the other hand are wild and unruly and have both yet to be tamed, if they will ever be? |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | One of her strengths is her unsinkable sense of humour, which can often land her in trouble, but which she has always used it for self-defence and a shield for her own emotions. Aurania was a naturally gifted surgical student and her empathy has always been well used to support and enhance her diagnostic/bedside manner, whether as a doctor or Counsellor which she has also tried successfully. The one thing she has always been able to fall back on has been her professional success, which has given her the opportunity to rise through the ranks of Starfleet and keep her life, and her faith in herself (professionally at least) as stable as possible. She multitasks with the best and is at her fullest when life and work are throwing her challenges however, she does tend to wilt somewhat within too restrictive a routine or under too tight control. Her main weaknesses are her damaged personal self-esteem and her ability to make a mess of the personal side of her life, but after years of separation she's now made her peace with her Ex and is regaining her equilibrium. Rani still feels the need to prove herself to those she admires or loves, sometimes too much so for her own good. She does however see the overview quite quickly and has developed the ability to re-balance herself when she's thrown a curved ball. She loves what she does and will always want to keep getting better at it. Her father and paternal grandfather's obsession with higher rank is lost on Rani, she achieved any promotion by her successes but has not gone out of her way to seek recognition along the way. If she helps people and ‘cures ills’ then she’s at her happiest. |

Character Background
| Personal History | Aurania is the fourth child of five and only daughter from a marriage between the second son of a successful Terran family and a female Betazoid Ambassador, whose own family were a well-to-do house on Betazed, so she had led a sheltered and somewhat privileged life until she was in her early twenties when she disgraced her family by getting pregnant and was cast out to fend for herself shortly after graduating from the Starfleet Academy. Almost none of her friends know much about what happened to Rani personally after she left the Academy, but she was supported by two of her older brothers, one of whom took in her illegitimate child and adopted her, partly because he and his own wife could not have children of their own and partly to rescue Rani and her child from whatever fate might have thrown at them out in the universe alone. In gratitude, and under a promise that was asked of her, Rani has never divulged the real origin of her "niece" who was re-christened and is accepted by her family as an orphaned human-betazoid-trill that her brother Ed, and sister-in-law Scarlett, are alleged to have adopted through the Federation Agency. For his part, Ed kept Rani through Federation Medical School and training so she could become a doctor as planned and as soon as she qualified, she left Earth only returning to visit secretly. One of her other brothers, Matt, knows the truth, but his wife does not, and the rest of the family think Ed a saint for his support of his ‘outcast’ reprobate of a sister. Since then, Rani has buried herself in her work with the exception of a few disastrous personal relationships, none of which she had really given her heart to. However, four years ago, Rani met up with the former love of her life and father of her daughter, Benin Kendrax, a joined Trill she met at the Academy but who never knew until this moment, that he had left her pregnant. The two talked over their relationship and what had gone wrong. They had become close friends until Ben was posted to a five year expedition on which he embarked, shortly afterwards sending home news that he had met and was going to marry one of his shipmates with whom he had fallen head over heels in love. Rani misses her friend/first love, but she is at peace with this, especially as he is still a good friend and an attentive long-distance *uncle* to their child. Rani has now become able to bury the sadness of her past and look forwards to the future whatever that may hold for her. |
