Physical Description | Dr. Sylorik has an impeccable posture even for a Vulcan. He carries his lean frame lightly and gracefully. His hair is a deep shade of black but instead of the typical length afforded most Vulcans (hanging over the forehead), Sylorik sweeps his neatly-trimmed, medium-length hair back. The style make his ears more prominent. Sylorik's eyes are a rich dark brown almost like roasted coffee beans. He has the typical angular eyebrows that frame eyes slightly larger that most Vulcans--a trait that could be mocked. His skin is many shades darker than most Vulcans but still carries greenish undertones. His hands are soft, veinous and meticulously groomed--necessary for any surgeon. When he walks, he carries himself with calmness and slight authority (again, typical for any Vulcan). |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Sylorik is a typically meticulous and methodical Vulcan. More so, as an experienced surgeon and pathologist, he has a practical and very detail-oriented mindset. This means he values accuracy and efficiency above all (surprise surprise, Logistician - ISTJ). So taking his Vulcan heritage and career in medicine into account, he is a consummate pro at everything he does. He is focused but reserved and emotionally detached in the eyes of his peers. His approach to his work is calm and analytical. He prefers the facts over any speculation or conjecture--almost to a fault. Beneath this exterior lies an individual deeply burdened by immense personal turmoil. This trauma has left him physically and emotionally scarred which is at odds with his "Vulcan disposition". (more on this in Character Background) Sylorik is quietly principled and values competence and discipline in others. While this may seem (again) typically Vulcan, he does have genuine compassion for his patients and those he closely works with. He would never show open empathy but his attention to care is what gets this across. You can expect him to be curt and professional and he never reveals his inner struggles to others. Never. (Well, we shall see.) |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Vulcans aren't much of a secret anymore so his typical strengths are his clinical precision, his calmness under pressure, his expertise in the sciences and medical fields, logic, determination, self-reliance, etc. His biggest strength would be his self-discipline in spite of his inner turmoil. As for weaknesses, he is rigid and inflexible (typically Logistician-ISTJ). The Vulcan stoicism leads to emotional isolation as well. His internal struggles make him a potential liability in high-stakes situations. How he chooses to handle his struggles could be considered a chemical dependency which would lead into some very deep-seated guilt and self-loathing--something uncommon for Vulcans. |
|
Ambitions | Sylorik was a well-respected surgeon-turned-pathologist for decades at a large hospital. So while Vulcans are bound by logic, they aren't devoid of emotion. Having to step away from his career as chief of surgery to become a pathologist was the first blow. But he knew he was still in serving a similar purpose in a different role. His "acquired trauma" forced him to reassess his own existence. (see Character Background). He just couldn't confront this on an emotional level. This led him to depart Vulcan for Starfleet and he viewed this as "logical self-preservation" by seeking a change of scenery that would prevent further mental/physical deterioration. While to his family and peers, the decision to join Starfleet would appear perfectly rational. In reality, it's just a well-concealed form of self-exile. Now, he can distance himself from the source of his pain (or so he thought). His current ambition is to find peace. He seeks no position, rank or title beyond being of service to others. |
|
Hobbies & Interests | Sylorik engages in several "intellectual pursuits" (as he would call them), including meditation and linguistics. One of his secret hobbies is ice skating. |
Character Background
Personal History | Sylorik was born on Vulcan, the fifth of five children to Sovar and T'Raya. He comes from a predominantly "medical" family. As the youngest, he was expected to attend the VSA and move toward a career in medicine or the sciences. He did exactly that by graduating in the top 10% of his class and serving his surgical residency at a top hospital where his mother and older brother held positions. His attention to detail and ability to adapt to many of the automated medical systems made him a star surgeon very quickly. Over the years, he advanced to become chief of surgery at the hospital. Throughout his youth, he was arranged to be married to a Vulcan female but they cancelled the arrangement after Sylorik felt the union would affect both of their careers. This left a sadness for both of his parents. Ten years previously, Sylorik would move from general surgery to become a pathologist after a traumatic incident in the operating theater would leave him with severe and chronic post traumatic stress beyond anything most Vulcans could endure. Dr. Sylorik was part of a medical team that was assembled to respond to a catastrophic disaster at a remote Vulcan colony. This was a geological event causing violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions destroying not only the colony, but the planet itself. As one of the first responders, the team worked tirelessly to save as many lives as possible. The scale of devastation was beyond anything Sylorik had encountered, pushing him to his emotional limits. Amid the chaos, a critically-injured Vulcan elder--a respected scholar and keeper of the colony's historical records--initiated a mind-meld with Sylorik. This transferred the memories and emotions of countless colonists who had perished. The mind-meld was prolonged and intense. The influx of trauma, fear and despair shattered Sylorik's logical barriers, and this left him with heavy psychological damage. His Vulcan training and discipline were unable to suppress the trauma. Upon returning to Vulcan, he took a leave of absence to attempt to control the memories. He was only partially successful. After a period of months in meditation and seclusion with monks, he managed to control the thoughts and emotions--he could put a lid on the internal trauma. However, as with any lid that doesn't close properly, some of that trauma continues to leak slowly and intermittently--in the form of uncontrollable trembling, sweating, unsteadiness, loss of balance, blurred vision and muscle contraction. He kept this entirely to himself, never letting anyone know of this inner turmoil. As a surgeon, Sylorik knew his career was effectively over. He transitioned to pathology where his ministrations could not affect living people. Still, he suffered from frequent episodes of shaking. He attempted to find a treatment for the PTSD but was unsuccessful. He eventually left Vulcan for a career in Starfleet. While the move wasn't entirely lateral, he did have to attend eighteen months at Starfleet Academy. Most of Sylorik's family did not approve of his decision to leave. It was while living on Earth where he would come across an injectable drug (not approved nor thoroughly tested) which he would use to stop the PTSD attacks. He continues to use this drug whenever he feels an attack coming on. |
