Physical Description

Vevira is a tall six-limbed insectoid whose body is protected by overlapping plates of deep bronze-green carapace. Two primary legs support her upright stance, while four narrower upper limbs are used for manipulation, gesture and, in formal settings, a complex Zethari sign-language that accompanies speech. Fine translucent wings fold close along her back when at rest. They are not capable of sustained flight in standard gravity, but they vibrate in carefully controlled patterns that add rhythm, emphasis and emotional punctuation to her words. Her head is narrow and angular with large faceted eyes that shift between black, emerald and violet depending on the angle of light. Two articulated sensory antennae are almost never completely still. When Vevira is thinking hard, the tips curl inward. When genuinely amused, they flare apart. The most famous Zethari trait is their luminous carapace. Bands beneath the plates can emit faint coloured light during heightened neurological activity. Outsiders commonly claim that a Zethari “glows when lying.” This is an oversimplification. The light actually responds to cognitive conflict: attempting deliberate deception may trigger it, but so can shame, divided loyalties, uncertainty, traumatic memory, or speaking a truth the individual desperately wishes were false. A skilled Zethari can moderate the response, although never perfectly. Vevira finds the widespread belief that her species possesses a biological lie detector both useful and profoundly irritating.

General Overview

Vevira is intellectually fearless, conversationally playful and almost impossible to intimidate through status alone. She has spent most of her career in rooms filled with people who believed military rank, wealth or political office made their arguments more correct. She disagrees. She speaks in long, carefully structured thoughts, often beginning with a question rather than an assertion. Her wing-tones create a subtle rhythmic counterpoint to her voice; people familiar with her eventually learn that a slow three-beat vibration usually means she is about to challenge an assumption everyone else has accepted. She enjoys argument, but not humiliation. Vevira does not debate to win. She debates to discover which parts of an idea survive pressure. Her most infuriating habit is asking someone to define an apparently obvious word. “Safe.” “Necessary.” “Neutral.” “Ownership.” “Home.” She believes many political disasters begin when everyone agrees to the same sentence while privately using different definitions.

Personal History

Vevira began as a comparative historian studying how technologically unequal civilisations negotiate first contact, trade and strategic dependency. Her early work focused on agreements that appeared voluntary on paper but became coercive because one party controlled transportation, medicine, energy or information. Her academic reputation was made by a controversial work titled The Consent of the Smaller Voice, which argued that treaties between powerful states are incomplete if their consequences fall heavily upon populations that were never represented in the negotiation. The work angered several governments and made her extremely popular among minor systems, frontier communities, non-aligned colonies and scholarly institutions. She later became Arch-Dean within the Ninefold Collegium, a loose Zethari network of universities, archives and independent research houses. The Collegium has little conventional military power but enormous influence in education, historical preservation, translation and intergovernmental scholarship. Vevira is therefore not at Zyphera because the Zethari possess a component without which Erebus cannot function. She is there because a large number of smaller Circinus powers asked someone to ensure they were not discussed as an afterthought.
