Character Background

Personal History James Edith.
Born February, 2351
Birth Location: Lunar Surface.

James Edith, born to Roman and Amanda Edith, always looked up at the stars through the glass dome on the Moon. He always wished to be among them and always felt connected to them. This was only natural since his parents were both in Star Fleet. He imagined and wondered. His father, Roman, was a Commander in deep space. His mother, Amanda, a Chief Medical Officer on Earth. Through his parentage, he learned what was in the great beyond and wanted to be apart of it.

His father’s collection of old dust covered books, stored in the attic, was James’s sanctuary. Jules Verne, Sir Conan Doyle, Mary Shelly, were his go to authors for the magic and mystical. He read and learned of madness and science fiction, the imaginary and the hunt. His parents only fed his mind with tales of the frontier and contacts with new life and new civilizations.

In High School, James was selected senior class liaison to Star Fleet’s Science Division to participate in two research studies. One was a trip to the Mariana’s Trench, the deepest place on Earth. There, he watched, studied, and learned of the beautiful yet mysterious creatures of the deep. In 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, one of Jame’s favorite novels, Nemo find despair on the Nautilus as he plunged further and further into the deep. James, however, did not feel as Nemo did as he reached the bottom of the sea. He only felt more curious and more interested in the unknown. He imagined other parts of the galaxy and what was yet to be explored, found, and discovered.

The second study was on Jupiter’s Moon, Io. He was to help investigate a twenty year old crashed Andorian freighter. Star Fleet already had the answers as to why it crashed but he was to learn and discover for himself. Upon scrutinizing the debris field, and using current research methods and technologies, he hypothesized that the freighter was impacted by solar winds, affecting its inertia dampeners, and caused the crash when the freighter couldn’t recover from the descent. He learned of this by discovering residual signs of moving particles on the freighter’s hull. James would be correct in his findings and made his instructors impressed. Unfortunately, the nine passengers in the freighter were killed in the crash inside their escape pods, as the pods also failed to escape the solar winds when ejected. James was awarded an achievement award in Science upon his return to his school.

Upon his completion of High School, James decided to pursue Archeology in College.

June 2374, he earned his Doctorate of Archeology & Anthropology at the University of Bristol and became a Professor at the college. His specific area of interest and research was galactic antiquity – the study of ancient civilizations of the past throughout the galaxy.

January 2375, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Star Fleet Marines as the Federation/Dominion War continued. It was the same year that the Treaty of Bajor ended the conflict yet James chose to stay in the Marines as it would provide ample opportunity to pursue his academic interest outside of the confines of the college while continuing to serve Star Fleet, following in the footsteps of his parents.

April 2393, he was promoted to the rank of Marine Captain and transferred to Earth as a Marine liaison to Star Fleet Research and Development, Science Department. This was primarily an administrative position.

Throughout his 21-year career as a marine, James does not have much combat experience. His assignments have always been protective – assigned to various outposts and stations as more of a deterrent than front line combat operations. This was almost by design as Starfleet Admiralty has always held back officers with advanced degrees from ‘grunt work’. This was also a factor of his relatively little promotion history throughout his career. He is, however, well trained as a Marine and enjoys it. His skills are highly informed by continuous mandatory training and rotation.

At this point in his life and career, his interest in Archeology and Anthropology, is purely academic with sporadic inclusion in case studies and voluntary research with permission from Science. His Star Fleet record is spotless, and because of this, has been given ongoing permission to continue to pursue this interest on top of his marine duties. His multitasking skills have yet to let him down.

May 2396, he has completed additional command training. Seeking to transfer back into the "field", he has applied for the Marine Executive Officer position on board the USS Elysium.
