Nearing the End

In just a few short months I'm going to be an official graduate of the Starfleet Academy, this is such an empowering accomplishment. I should be over the moon about this, but I'm not. I'm mere months, ten weeks actually, from joining the pantheon of powerful female leaders that Starfleet has become, and I can't enjoy it as much as I think I should be.

I was told when I finished my Doctorate from Tufts at twenty five that clinicals were going to be tough, I went in expecting a challenge, but this was way beyond what I was expecting. I was given a patient; a thirty year veteran who had gone through such trauma in her life, yet somehow manages to live a fairly balanced, healthy existence: career, relationship, friendships, everything.

Then a couple of bloodthirsty hawks put her through Hell on Cortic VI...

Not even a full day after being rescued from captivity, they sent her into the field, into combat. No negotiations, no less than lethal weapons, shoot to kill. Throwing hot lead at other people like a bunch of savages.

They gave my patient a rifle and put her in a situation where she had to kill four young men, none of them older than twenty two, to survive, less than a full day after barely escaping a slave trading criminal with her life.

The worst part? She's angry at me because I won't let her go out on away missions. I can't get her to understand that she's not mentally ready for this yet. She's still suffering the primary trauma and it would be irresponsible of me, no, it would be inhumane of me to put her out there again now before she's worked through it.

If I could do so without breaking confidentiality I would apply to JAG to have Cdr. Taylor and Lt. Cdr. Brett censured for their actions in regard to patient Liorga for the permanent mental damage their reckless actions have caused her. If I already had my commission, I would be pushing for her to be medically retired after this. She needs to be out of this type of thing so she can live the rest of her life in peace.

The most disappointing aspect of the abuse of Chief Liorga is that one of the perpetrators, Lt. Cdr. Anje Brett, is the niece of Ambassador Anje Zhukov, one of the Federation's best diplomats. You would think being from the same bloodline as such a peacemaker she would've wanted to negotiate instead of going in shooting. Supremely disappointing...

Now, now, I have to figure out how to get Liorga to stop viewing me as the enemy and know that my actions are motivated by love so she can see I'm just trying to help her get back to the best life possible.

My maternal unit said there would be days like this...

Peace and Love.
