Mission: Season 3: Episode 4: Cause and Effect
Location: Observation deck
Timeline: MD11
1565 words - 3.1 OF Standard Post Measure

Luke walked onto the observation deck, it was quiet these days now that there was nothing out there to see in the dark void of empty space so when he saw that the room was occupied is curiosity peaked. Walking over to the woman, he quickly identified her as a trill due to her spots before clearing is throat "Its not often people are found down here" He said now standing next to her staring out the window in the void beyond.

Olivia smiled a little when she heard the voice of someone coming up beside her. “It is rare that I get to visit this area,” Olivia replied. “I thought that I’d take a few minutes to collect my thoughts on a couple things before going back on duty for the rest of my shift.” Olivia looked at the reflection of who had come up beside her in the window. “What brings you down here Gunnery Sergeant?”

"The same as you, to clear my thoughts and maybe if i look long enough ill see a star or a way out of this place." He explained before adding, "Names Luke Wyatt, and who do I owe the pleasure of meeting" Luke watched through the window, the void infront of them empty of everything except thier reflections. She was shorter than what he was with light brown hair though he couldn't make out her eye colour as they appeared grey in the window, she was also wearing the teal uniform of someone with a science or medical background a not so different color to his green.

“I’m Olivia Voight, the Assistant Chief Medical Officer here on board ship,” Olivia replied. “Have you figured anything out yet during your time here looking out the window?”

"Its nice to meet you Miss Voight" he said thinking about her question, had he figured anything out? "Unfortunately not, in fact most of the time I leave her with more questions than answers, as is life really. Close one door ten more open and so on" He chuckled thinking about it. "Voight doesnt sound like a traditional Trill surname, joined I gather?" Luke had worked woth Trills before and had some understanding of how they work, and how some choose to carry a symbiote which in turn they adopted thier name and memories.

“Yes, I am joined,” Olivia replied. “Voight is my symbionts name. Those that haven’t seen me in awhile still call me by my family name, until I let them know about the joining.” Olivia thought for a moment before continuing on. “I am the third host for Voight. Who knows how many hosts there will be after me. Since you have some doors closed on you and others open up, what have you figured out?”

"That most things in life are not permanent. Like this void, I know someday well get out and see the stars again. Ive learnt that through perseverance comes great reward and that I need to spend as much time with my daughter as possible because she deserves more than i have ever could give" Luke smiled at the reflection of himself, the fact of the matter was Luke had learnt a lot in his short life with most of those lessons being taught by his daughter Abbey and from a young age had been the single parent off since her mothers death.

Olivia smiled once more. “Granted there are things along the way that are not permanent, but a few things are permanent,” Olivia replied. One thing that is always constant is the love of family and friends weather or not they are with us physically or elsewhere. Has your daughter started taking classes yet here onboard the Elysium?”

"Nothing official, but I know she has been hanging around the science department," He thought for a moment before adding, "I'm surprised she hasn't made an appearance in sickbay, I know her ambitions are either in the field of scientific study or Medical and by the fact you have been driven stir crazy I doubt you've met her yet" He joked, Abby was quiet the handful.

"I'm sure she will make an appearance at some point, once she checks out all that she can down in the Science department and labs," Olivia replied. "There are several area's to check out science related. Has she checked out the Astrology area yet?"

"I wish I could give you an answer but she doesn't tend to give me a complete rundown of whats he does, that being said and knowing she is particularly interested in astrology I can has at a guess she has been," Luke replied honestly, he really should take more of an interest in his daughters shenanigans and mentally added that to his ever-increasing list of things to do.

Olivia softly laughed a bit. “Sounds like someone needs to go into recon mode to check up on a certain young lady,” Olivia replied. “I know that my own father did that to me a couple times along with one of my brothers as well.” Olivia thought for a moment before continuing. “Then again you could always give your daughter a challenge of sorts to see how she does on said challenge.”

Luke chuckled at the idea of him sneaking around following Abbey but ever since she had grown into a teen he had allowed her to her own privacy and aslong as sje disnt get into troubke tried to stay out of anything she didnt want him near however the latter part of her suggestion caught his interest. "A challenge huh? What would you suggest?"

“You could always set up a physical challenge and a knowledge based one for her,” Olivia replied. “It could be done on the holodeck or in the department of interest for your daughter. The physical side of the challenge would be to see how well she handled moving around handling certain tasks at hand that would be dealt with on a regular basis and during a normal routine shift handle an unexpected emergency of sorts. Then for the knowledge portion, test her on seeing where her strong points are and any weaknesses to see what could be improved upon. That way it might help narrow down the route she might want to take with classes for the Academy.”

"That's actually a pretty good idea but I wouldn't know where to start especially when it came to the the knowledge portion of the challenge." He said thinking before adding, "Would you help? For the medicsl side of things?"

“I’d be willing to help out,” Olivia replied. “I’m sure that there are a few things you remember from your time at the Academy. You would of have at least taken some of the basics, where as I ended up with more of the advanced stuff. Plus I’m sure you know how to tell the difference in the tricorders even if you don’t understand all the different readings on them.”

Luke chuckled at the comment, "Marines, unfortunately, don't go to the Academy and I joined during the Dominion war so I have far less training than the average Starfleet officer most of my knowledge is through experience" He explained. "That said I really do like your idea."

"You still learned a few of the basics along the way though," Olivia replied. "If you wanted I could teach you a few more things along the way if you wanted."

Thinking about the offer he smiled and nodded. "That actually also sounds like something I could get behind, I am a believer of always trying to learn something new so your help is most appreciated, and they say old dogs can't learn new tricks" Luke chuckled at his own joke.

Olivia laughed a little. “Your willing to learn a few new tricks so to speak,” Olivia replied. “There are some that don’t even bother to try learning new things. I will work on the written and verbal portion of the knowledge based testing for both you and your daughter. After that we can go from there physical portion of the testing for your daughter.”

"Sounds like a plan to me!" He said with a smile going silent for a few minutes as he appreciated the darkness in front of them. "Well, I think I best get back to work else they'll send someone to find me. It's been a pleasure to meet you" This time Luke turned to face the woman for the first time.

“It has been a pleasure meeting you as well,” Olivia replied. “I have to get back soon myself. Make sure to watch your six marine.”

"Oh dont worry, I will. Make sure you keep your hand steady... For like when you know, in case you accidentally cut the wrong thing or something." Luke looked at her growing a slight hint of red before trying to rescue himself, "You know what just stay safe, see you again soon." He waved and gave her a cautious nod before turning to leave.

Olivia smiled up at the Gunnery Sergeant. “One has to have steady hands for both of our jobs,” Olivia replied as she watched the Gunnery Sergeant leave.” Olivia stood there for a few minutes longer before heading out herself.
