Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter
EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?
MD: I'm the AFCO. I fly the ship, look after the shuttles, teach others how to fly. I got to fly the Quantum Slipstream Drive for the first time. That was amazing. The helm configuration isn't quite right for it. Some form of stick controls would work better, and I'm working with Kara Hoffman to see whether the simulations back up that theory. I'm biased, because stick is way more fun, whatever you're flying, so we need to get some solid numbers if I want to justify a conversion to the captain.
EPR: What made you choose that line of work?
MD: I've been flying since I was three years old. I don't know how to do anything else. I am genuinely rubbish at anything that isn't flying. its just like breathing, its something you do without thinking. I've flown a lot of different ships, though most of them were only partially functioning, flotsam and jetsam my dad's salvage ship was recovering. I've flown Klingon and Ferengi ships, and I got to back a galor class out of a tangle of other wrecks as we couldn't get the tugs in to pull it out.
I want to join the test pilots program at Planetia Utopia, but I need four thousand hours at conn first. Assuming not too much shore leave and and an eight hour shift, I can do that in about two years.
EPR: How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?
MD: I go flying, most of the time. Flying solves ninety five percent of everything. Have you ever been to the moons of Saturn. They have cryo-volcanoes that spit out hydrogen and diamonds, flying through those, the diamonds fall like rain, its very soothing, and very pretty, the light just sparkles and dances on everything
And I like playing the BloodBeard The Pirate holonovels too. I've also read all the text novels too. My favourite character is Bloodbeard's cabin boy. Even though he's not a swordsman or a brawler, he's still useful; he's a quick thinker and is small so can get in places the other crew can't. And it means when I play in the holodeck I don't have to wear skirts. They wore so many clothes back in those day! At least I can wear pants when I Roger.
EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?
MD. What one of my instructors told me: Do you know what they call the person who graduates bottom of the class at Starfleet Academy?
EPR: No what do they call them?
MD: Ensign.
EPR: Isn't anyone who graduates an Ensign?
MD: Exactly. So many people stress over being the top three, or the top five percent. It doesn't matter. All you have to do is pass. After that, no one cares.
EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?
MD - Mostly out-flying all the blowhards in the fighter school. I can't shoot for toffee but it still pissed them off that they couldn't shoot me either. I blew through all their course records that didn't involve shooting. I lasted in the fighter school about two weeks, before they worked out I'm a lousy shot, but then the commandant started calling me back to set course targets on new flight courses, and to help teach aerobatics.
EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?
MD - Hmmmm. Not yet. I've only been here a few weeks though. I'm sure it will happen in time though. Ask me again in six months. I may very well have something to report.
