Timeline: MD7 - After Victor Barclay Counseling Session
2234 words - 4.5 OF Standard Post Measure
Victor and his daughter left the Counselor's office. Victor suggested the two of them go see the Chief Science Officer Arianna because Lara has an AI program in her IPADD. It was sophisticated but not super. Plus the IPADD has a report Victor filed on how the Borg Gestalt was defeated.
Seeing Arianna, Victor spoke, "Thanks for accepting this meeting request. Lara, this is Commander Arianna Salannis an Vantar. Arianna, this is my daughter Lara."
"Hello Commander," Lara said with her charm. "This is VIOLA," she says opening up her IPADD. "She is my AI friend."
Arrianna turned from the Astrometrics Console and examined it. "Hmm... Interesting... Is it self-aware?" Arrianna noted. "And I do not believe we have meet yet, Lieutenant. And did you mention something called a Borg Gestalt?"
"Yes Mam," Victor says, "Self aware but it is a child when you compare it to your AI Program. As for as the Borg Gestalt, it was created by a Caeliar named Sedin. The Caeliar have what is called Catoms which allows them to communicate with each other. I can talk to you private about it later." He looks at Lara for the reason why. "What I can do is transfer files from this IPADD to your computer and you and I can discuss the reports and logs."
Arri spoke. "Would you like to see my work, Lieutenant? You may be of some help with it."
"I would appreciate it Commander," Victor says appreciative. "Lara, you sit here and please do not touch anything."
"Yes Father," Lara replied with cute eyes.
Arri stood and escorted Victor to another lab. Inside this particular lab was a well shielded and contained isolation chamber. Arrianna picked up two sensor gloves and two manipulator arms picked up what appeared to be a hardened case from a shelf of several small to mid-sized cases and placed the case on a table in the isolation room.
Arri used the manipulators to open a case and the manipulators retrieved an occular implant. "Two hundred years ago, my people, The Alindari, encountered the Borg. They completely destroyed the old imperium, but they didn't destroy all of us." Arri noted. "Since that day, my people's impressive academic community has dedicated itself to studying the collective. I constructed this lab specifically for analysis of Borg Technology the Alindari Imperium and the Federation have recovered."
Arri continued "This lab is isolated from the main computer all known forms of signals. The containers you see, will only open in an absolute vacuum, and with complex biometric keys calibrated to certain bio-signatures. Furthermore, if these cases are tampered with or destroyed, the cases will purge their contents."
"You can examine the files on the IPADD," Victor says looking around. "I have heard of your race. To shake off the Borg twice is unheard of Commander. So is there still an assimilated Borg Collective in this reality?"
"We called it the Searing of Alindar, Lieutenant. The Borg focused their efforts on the core world of the Imperium, virtually ignoring the colonies. Fortunately, Princess Anara IV Althir was on a Cira attending a conference on comparative exobiology when the colonies lost contact with the core world's. It didn't take long to realize what was happening."
"Anara induced the emergency powers decree. You see, when the Senate or anyone else is unable to act in the Imperium, any of the Althir family can induce emergency powers. She then gave a heartbreaking order. Load as many ships as possible with our youngest and flee onto the nebula of the lost. What remained of the imperial navy then executed an orbital bombardment on our colonies." Arri sighed. "They knew what was being asked of them. Our people will gladly give our lives for each other, and we left no hint of a clue where we went. They believe we destroyed ourselves than to allow ourselves to be assimilated. You see to my people there is no greater horror than to become a living machine. Death is just ascension to a higher plane of existence. A livjng machine has no concept of ascension. So they are trapped in a finite universe to linger forever." Arri noted. "We live to enhance the individual with mental and physical development. We are the ultimate university, as many on Earth call us."
"I hope I do get assigned to this ship," Victor makes a plea. "You have the state of art in this lab. I feel I have a lot to offer. Plus I already checked. This reality has a different crew on the Excalibur."
"Have you not been assigned here?" Arri noted.
"Not yet Commander," Victor replied, "So far I have been given a physical and a counseling session. The files in this IPADD will vouch for my aptitude. If you need personal recommendation then I suggest you contact Commander Runyun of Department of Temporal Investigations or Guinan of the USS Enterprise. Then there is always a trial basis."
Arrianna smirked. "Consider them contacted. I think You'd fit in well here." She read the IPADD. "I have a proposal for you, Lieutenant."
"A proposal?" He asks cocking his head a bit. "What kind?"
"When old Alindar was destroyed, the first thing the surviving princess of the Althir family did was to create a scientific initiative. We are called the Anara Initiative, after its founder." Arrianna noted. "The Initiative's goal is simple. Nanoinjectors that can neutralize nanoprobes, advanced weapons and shields they cannot adapt to, tactics they cannot defend against, and most importantly; the ability to liberate drones from the Collective.." Arri noted. "And restore their Aea... their souls... We are scientists, soldiers, diplomats, and leaders who have put aside all differences for our common goal, and we welcome all who have the talents we require." Arri brought up a what appeared to be a countdown. "This countdown is updated often from the Initiative's intelligence sources. We use probes and deep space sensor arrays to track the Borg's transwarp activity in the Delta Quadrant. We estimate about forty years... forty years until they've built the infrastructure to invade this part of the Galaxy in force." Arri explained. "I've dedicated my life to this research."
Arrianna then brought something up. "This is what they did to Mother Alindar."
An image appeared from an old Alindari battlecruiser off a fleet of cubes setting fire to a class M world, with an equally beautiful ringworld around it. It was efficient, brutal. Recordings shifted to troops on the ground being overwhelmed, civilians being injected with nanoprobes and then walking away to be assimilated further. A true nightmare. "They left the Halo of Althir broken and lifeless. Alindar in a Nuclear Winter. Two Millennia of Peace and the greatest age of advancement and knowledge broken. The old imperium was truly the pinnacle of our people's achievement. A nexus of diplomacy, learning, and trade.... gone possibly forever. Two millennia of art and philosophy gathered from across the Beta Quadrant." Arri spoke. "This will happen to the United Federation of Planets, unless everyone acts to save it."
"I would be happy to help," Victor says, "I can recreate the some of the weapons I created years back. It is important to keep everyone safe. Everyone wants their children to grow up in a better place. I feel this is a great start of a beautiful friendship which was a line in a movie called Casablanca."
"That's essentially the goal Victor. Our children will be Individuals... not Drones." Arri noted. "Don't worry about your transfer, Victor. I will see to that immediately, even if I must use every favor I have. You are going to be here on this ship. Don't worry about your clearance either. I'll speak to my cousin about your immediate entry into the Initiative."
"Thank you," Victor says, "So tell me more about the ability of your species having the ability to share memories. For instance when I meet my mother or Tonya for instance and they want to know more about the other Reality, could you help plus with this Initiative, would you like for me to share my memories?"
Arri smiled. "It is very personal with us, Victor. Normally few outsiders consent to that. Many of my people hesitate to do it with outsiders because of our history with telepathy. We once used our gifts for conquest, Victor. Are you willing to let my mind touch yours? It requires the greatest amount of trust between us, you'll see everything I am, everything I was. The scent of a nightrose on the Vantar's biodome. What I had for Dinner this morning. Like a Vulcan Mind Meld. Do you want this?"
Air was caught in his throat for a moment as knew it would be a very intimate experience. Air expels his lungs as he said, "Yes but not now. I will ask you later. Off the record, you are a very attractive lady and I do trust you but I do not trust myself. I am sure you understand. When I meet Tonya, I do not want any distractions."
Arrianna nodded. "However know that while it's personal, only my partner Josephine will be able to view some even more personal things inside my mind. Also. You will feel my Aea. We call that our souls, and it's everything we are." Arri noted. "When we live, the Aea learns and grows. becoming great with the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom, and when we die. The Aea leaves for another plane of existence, wise as an ascendant being. That is how my people view metaphysics. Nothing is an accident in the universe. And there's more caveats to it. Existence itself is not a chance happening to us." Arri noted. "We exist for the journey, Lieutenant. Not just the destination."
"I feel honored to be part of your journey," Victor says giving her an aristocratic nod. He feels a bit distracted when he looks into her Aea as he could feel a metaphysical connection. Victor breathes in a wee bit. "Now getting back to he IPADD, have you been able to do your diagnostics plus capture the files."
Meanwhile in the other room where Lara was not touching anything but she was admiring the cybernetics projects. She says to herself it was a hybrid of a few ones she had studied but there was some she never seen before.
Arrianna entered the lab with Victor. "Careful Lara. There's a reason we keep those things in there and not out here." Arri then smiled. "Allow me to show you the less ominous research." Arri moved into another part of the medical cybernetics lab and pulled a container down from a shelf. Inside was several clear vials with clear liquid. "This is a synthetic protein designed to seek out common rare metals used in Borg Nanoprobes and corrode them. Once the corrosion takes place, the immune system activates and kicks the nanoprobes out."
"I would never touched without the proper PPE," Lara says as she glances at the protein. "I already learn d my lesson. Does it work?"
Arri sighed. "The problem is testing it. We project a sixty percent chance of success, but a eight percent chance that after several uses, the borg would adapt to Protein H113. The remarkable thing is H113 is a simple biocomputer. We can program it by introducing different RNA mediums, so like a phaser, we can reconfigure these kind of Nano-Inhibitors. If successful, this could save billions from Assimilation."
"Do you have any catoms?" Lara asks, "Build your own Borg."
Arrianna spoke. "The College of Scholars is still researching that. Very sensitive research, a great amount of potential, and danger." Arri was impressed.
"I read the case file about them," Lara answers politely. "Not Dad's fault I read it. I like to read report and Mark McHenry forgot to secure his station. Captain Calhoun told me if I read another report, he would throw me in the Brig."
Arrianna smiled. "Impressive... Very impressive. Do not worry, I would be remiss to do such a thing. How do you know this?"
"What I do not understand," Lara says grinning and gave Arri sweet eyes, "I look it up."
Arrianna knew this young girl was impressive. "Lara, I want you on my team as an intern." Arri knelt down to her face. "You have a great mind, young one. I want you on my team as an acting Scientist's mate. You will still have to attend to your formalized studies at the ship's school, but after that... you will assist my team here with your father's permission" She smiled. "Do you want to become my Protégé, Lara Barclay de Tolly?" Arri presented a hand.
"Yes Commander Ari," Lara says saluting Arianna. "I accept."
Victor trusted Arianna. "You have my permission."
"Thank you Father," she says so formal and in character.
"Thank you Commander," Victor says graciously.
Arrianna smiled. "She is amazing, Lieutenant. Such a mind needs to be honed... not put in the brig."
Viola hearing everything asks, "What about me?"
"Do not worry," Lara answers, "I will bring you to take notes but you must behave or I will put you in my drawers. And do not mess with the ship's AI. Remember what happen when you had a run-in with Morgan Primus."
"Don't remind me," Viola answers.
Arri spoke. "Welcome to Starfleet you two." Arri smiled.
