Drifting Thoughts

Mission: Season 4: Episode 3: Guided by Starlight
Location: Operations Department
519 words - 1 OF Standard Post Measure

Baeryn let out a hefty sigh as she leaned back in her chair tossing a data padd onto her desk. It felt like she had been reading for hours, researching so much her mind might explode. There were quite a few learning curves she was going to have to over come, she was good at her job but the Elysium was a far more modern ship then the pile of scrap she came from. There is was like using duck tape and bubblegum to keep things together and running. Nothing new, just recycled if you will.

It was exciting to be given the opportunity for such a position and she refused to let anyone down. That wasn't her way. She was a miracle worker on the Rosenbloom, but maybe less so here? Baeryn didn't care much for reputation, she saw how that had consumed her mother and ruined the relationship with Baeryn's father. She did however care that she was seen as dependable, reliable, and occasionally a skilled problem solver. There weren't many problems for her to solve here and it made her a tad...underwhelmed.

You see having a problem to focus on, such as configuring power couplings or scheduling sensor utilizations, kept her busy and focused. Her last post had her running ragged for days on end, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Baeryn thrived off chaos and stress.

This being her first post change she tried to keep the anxiety at bay. Which you would think would be easy for someone of Betazoid heritage- sadly, not in her case. Her mother hadn't been around to help her control her emotions and empathic abilities. Not that Baeryn would have listened to the woman had she been.

Her thoughts drifted to her mother. She wondered if she knew Baeryn was a member of starfleet, or if she kept tabs on her at all. Baeryn certainly hadn't been keeping them on her mother. She didn't even have the decency to contact Tora to inform her that her husband had passed. A slight pang of regret stabbed her heart. She had been so angry in her adolescence, filled with such hate for the woman and her absence in her life.

After rubbing her eyes in attempt to blur the images of her fathers death she rose from her seat and walked to the replicator. "Coffee, hot with a hint of cinnamon and cream." The coffee materialized quickly and Baeryn took it and walked back to the desk. She inhaled the coffees sweet woody aroma for a few moments before taking a sip letting the temperature of the coffee burn its was down her esophagus.

The hour was late but she knew attempting to sleep would only cause her frustration. There was much to learn about this ship and its crew and she intended to get her fill before calling it a night. She picked up a data padd containing the personnel roster for the Operations department. Her eyes landed on her assistant's name. She proceeded to open the file and settled in for what would be an all nighter of information overload.
