Cara had finally gotten the article written about Tayalas and her mother's struggle to keep her, she was actually pleased with it for once. She had done it for no reason other than to get the truth out there, and she had succeeded in that effort. The pictures though, they sold the story, they were the main star of the show. Dozens of pictures of Tayalas with her mommy, dozens of pictures that showed the depth of love between them, that would do it. The ringing of the phone alarmed her out of her reverie, reaching her back into reality, "Hello." Cara said, not expecting the call she was about to receive.
"is this Cara Starfire?" The woman's voice on the other end snarled.
"Yes, this is she." Cara answered, still confused as to who it was, "Who is this?"
"This is the woman who just stopped your article, bitch." Debbie Cardille laughed, "Debbie Cardille, grandmother of Tayalas Cardille."
"Tayalas Cardille?" Cara asked, very confused, "I don't know a Tayalas Cardille, I know a Tayalas Norris. Can I help you?"
"Yes, you can print a retraction of that awful article you wrote about my son." Debbie asked, she actually asked, "And never call my granddaughter by that woman's name again."
"Ma'am, I don't think I should be speaking to you when there's an ongoing legal proceeding." Cara smiled and tried to hang up on Debbie Cardille, but was stopped by Debbie Cardille.
"You don't want to do that, Miss Staretsky." Debbie warned as Cara moved to terminate the call, "You really don't want to do that."
"And why not?" Cara asked, practically laughing as she did, "What have you got to threaten me with, Deb?"
"Threaten? Threaten?" Debbie asked, laughing hard at her foe, "I don't make threats, darling, I'm making a very serious promise."
"Promising me what?" Cara asked, her curiosity no doubt piqued.
"The job of press secretary for the president of the United Federation of Planets, General Thomas Grogan." She dangled it in front of Cara Starfire like a carrot on a stick, waiting for her to take the bait.
"Oh please..." Cara was now laughing, "Thomas Grogan isn't going to win the election, Anje Zhukov is, so you're offering me something that doesn't exist and won't exist, so that's over."
"Are you so sure it won't exist?" Debbie asked, she had her, she just needed to reel her in, "You're ready to risk it all on that?"
"Yeah, I am." Cara answered, no way was she selling out Gallia for this woman's promise of a midlevel job in this administration, "Good bye."
"Good bye if you want it." Debbie sighed, she was definitely going to enjoy this, "i'll give you some time to think it over, dear." With that, she clicked off the terminal and sipped a bottle of twelve thousand credit wine, she was going to enjoy this a great deal. She kicked back in her chair, just enjoying the moment of victory as she did.
