Phoenix looked over her shoulder as she ran down the corridors of the Elysium. Miran was running behind her, finding it rather strange to be running in what her sister had given her to wear. Phoenix stopped at an intersection and wait for her sister to catch up. Miran panted and glared at her. “This is silly Pene” she said calling her sister by her birth name. “Why should I do this…and why must I wear this?!”
This was running and the shorts, tee shirt, and sneakers Phoenix had replicated for her sister.
“Running makes you strong, it helps strengthen your body and your mind. If your body is healthy Miran, then your mind benefits. And there is no way you can run in a dress.” She paused as two men ran past in the opposite direction, dressed in workout clothes. “See we are not the only ones doing this.”
“You are crazy” Returned Miran.
“Look at it this way. If father comes to get you, or if he sends someone to collect you, the fitter you are, the easier it will be for you to run away and maintain that running for a period of time.”
Her sister fell silent as she considered her older sister’s words. “Did he send people after you?”
Phoenix shrugged. “Once or twice. But they stopped after a few years.”
“Why?”
“Why what?” Phoenix began to run again forcing Miran to keep up.
“Why did they stop?”
“Not sure. Didn’t our brother get married? Or engaged?”
“Engaged.” Miran got out between breaths. “ Pallas is getting married soon, apparently.”
“My pity to his wife” Came Pallas’s twin’s reply.
Miran shrugged. She had heard from their mother that at one stage, the twins had been close. A closeness that had completely shattered when Pallas had chosen to treat Penelope like garbage and encourage their father to whip her to near death after she took the blame for his actions.
The sisters didn’t speak again until they half staggered into their quarters. Phoenix had push them both hard, herself because she hadn’t run for a few weeks and Miran because she needed it.
“Go grab a shower Miran. I’ll go grab one too. Then you can get your school work out. If you want you can come to my office with me during beta shift.”
Miran shrugged. “I’ll let you know.”
Phoenix moved off to her own shower and gratefully stripped out of the sweaty workout clothes. She was grateful for the shower as she stepped under the sonic waves. She knew Miran still didn’t fully grasp the consequences of her running away, but knew it would come to her in time. Phoenix had been very surprised when her baby sister had shown up, she had been 3 when Phoenix had left and there had not been that much of a bond. Then again, Phoenix had only ever had a bond with her brother, whom she had thought loved her enough to protect her.
Now she had a thirteen year old depending on her to protect her from dangers.
A post by then Lieutenant Phoenix Lalor, Chief of operations, USS Elysium
