'Alright, two down and one more to go. I make a fool of myself in front of the chief medical officer and I embarassed myself in front of my own chief. Can't do worse than that, can I?' Myne pondered and talked to herself in her mind as she did her very best not to get lost around the ship.
Seriously, she would have to learn the layout of the ship eventually, and not get lost as much as she did this very first day. Finally, after quite a bit of wondering, she reaches her destination. The dreaded third meeting of the day. Taking a few deep breaths, Myne rings the door and is ready to enter the Executive Officer's office.
Garrett was going over some reports when his chime sounded. He wondered who was calling on him as he knew he had no scheduled appointments. Sighing he called out "Enter." without looking up as he continued to read the report.
Timidly Myne enters the office, her duffle bag in one hand. "Hello. Erm... Lieutenant Myne Redal presenting for duty I guess. Erm... Lieutenant Baeryn Whavi, Chief of Operations, told me to report to you sir."
Garrett stood as an unfamiliar officer entered. "Come in Lieutenant and have a seat, have you got your orders?" He asked, not wishing to scare the officer and have her run out of the office.
"Yes sir!" Nodding quickly Myne approached the desk and placed her duffle on it, opening it to pull out her orders and presenting them to the XO. After that she closed her duffle and placed it on the floor before taking a seat.
Garrett accepted the PaDD with her orders and read them over. " Thank you. If you would like something from the replicator, please help yourself Lieutenant." He said as Myne took a seat.
Looking to her side to where the replicator is, Myne nods. "Thank you!" Getting up she approaches the replicator and mutters a few words in a low tone. Only to return later with a handful of bits and bobs, small pieces of gear mostly. Which Myne carefully stuffs into her duffle bag before taking her seat once more.
Garrett watches Myne but says nothing until she is once again seated. "Feel better? More relaxed?" He inquires.
She looks confused at him and shrugs. "Kinda not so much. Really waiting for everything to hit the fan really. Thank you for letting me use your replicator though. So... did you get contacted by my chief or CMO?" Myne asks curiously.
"Suggestion Lieutenant breathe. Your here. No one is going to toss you off the ship. As from hearing from the CMO or Lt. Whavi, no I haven't. Is there a reason I should?"
Bringing a hand to her mouth she exhaled a few times. "I am breathing sir. And no... erm... no reason at all, everything is fine and dandy. I am cleared for duty! Yay!!" Myne says carefully looking at him for a long moment before sighing. "I am bad at first impressions sir... and second impressions, even third... I am really bad impressions in general sir, that is all."
"Well, if you would relax and not try so hard to make a good impression, you wouldn't make a bad or poor one." He looked at the PaDD. Operations officer. Good, you'll be with Whavi and her group including Romeo and Juliet."
"I know that sir, I read several books on that topic, only twelve true. But the theory doesn't seem to stick for some reason, no matter how much I try. Might have a defect to my internal systems, but I am sure eventually some engineer will figure out a quick fix." Myne replies not at all trying to be funny, but speaking rather honestly. "Romeo and Juliet? Oh wait, I know those two, from the Human holo show from several centuries ago. Juliet is the yellow sponge thingy and the Romeo is the purple star one, right?" Myne asks with such excitement she gets jumpy in her chair, happy to be able to discuss that holo show with the XO. Finally, she has something in common with an XO!
Garrett looks at her speechless at her idea of Romeo and Juliet not to mention her idea on why she is unable to make a good first impression. "Not exactly." He finally gets out. " Fictional Tragic lovers by William Shakespeare." Wondering what holo vid she had been watching in the first place.
A very confused, and even cute frown forms on her expression a she leans slightly forward to ask with a great deal of embarrassment. She did not like not knowing things, such as who someone apparently important was. But she had heard his name somewhere. "William Shakespear? The... erm... what was the name of that place... Austrialaian singer? Or was he a Admarican golf, or creckit or succer player?" She asks innocently butchering the name of two countries and two sports.
Garrett can't help but smiles as Myne tries to place the name. He wonders fleetingly if she is pulling his leg and then rejects the idea. The look on her face is too innocent, too pure. "Neither." He replies, "He was an English writer, playwright and poet. Possibly the greatest writer of the English language. He lived about 800 years ago. He was known as The Bard or the Bard of Avon." He explained to Myne.
A small hand raises up in the air, like a student wanting to ask a question to a teacher. "Erm... English? What is... wait I mean... erm... I thought that is just... how do I word it. English is the official language of Starfleet, right? I know that because I had to learn it when I applied to the Academy. Which I still think it's weird because it should be called like... Federation, or something, right? Or Human. So this guy was a Federation writer?"
Taking a few small breaths Myne rubs the side of her temple with that hand while showing off a really frustrated expression. She is actually rubbing apparently two particular dots, from the Trill dots that go down her body. "I am really sorry sir, Redal, my better half has never. Well, I am his first Starfleet host and my previous incarnations have never mostly spent their time not engaging with Human culture that much."
"Your thinking of Federation standard. Shakespeare wrote before there was a Starfleet. He was from the country on Great Britain or England." Garrett smiles at her explanation. "Don't feel bad Lieutenant. If your curious about Shakespeare or Human history, you can access the library computer to help you find what you need on a wide variety of topics and subjects."
There is a gentle recoil at the thought of researching Human history and her grimace is rather clear. "Yeah... do not take it personally sir. But, the reason none of us Redal hosts have much knowledge about Human history is because... Ooomph, you are really gonna not like me for this sir. Human history is really boring and bland, I am sorry, well not really sorry, it is so tedious an uneventful!" Myne tries to explain her way out of it though she doesn't really, unable to bring herself to lie, even if it would be just a innocent white lie.
Garrett listens to Myne's explanation about Earth history. "I'm sorry I disagree with your assessment of Earth history Lieutenant. It is rather colorful and violent. Are you sure you were studying Earth history? I don't believe I've ever had someone call it tedious, boring and bland."
Raising a hand once more she begins to count on her fingers. "Best history overall, Klingons, best drama Romulans, best opera Cardassians and best books Ferengi. Their best sellers are amazing. Sorry sir, just not a fan I guess." She looks thoughtful for a moment as she searches her memory for a moment. "Yep, several hosts back, still no fans. Not everyone must like Earth history sir... it's a big galaxy out there you know? Oh damn... forgot you are Human as well... damn... see? This is why I make bad impressions sir. They didn't have a course at the Academy that detailed that Earth history is mandatory to get along with others aboard Starfleet ships." Myne sighs and slumps in her chair looking dejected and sad.
Garrett manages not to look offended at Myne's statement. "Different strokes for different folks I guess. Don't feel bad Lieutenant. You are entitled to your opinion though I do wish you'd take the time to give Earth history a closer look. It just might surprise you. It's not an order merely a suggestion for you in your free time."
"Oh? Really? You're not gonna force to me read boring books? Yay! Thank you sir, that is very kind of you!" Her excitement is short lived however as she looks at him suspiciously. "Wait... this is not gonna go on my record like a black dot or something? The fact that I am not into Earth stuff? I promise to take into consideration the possibility of maybe giving this stuff a cursory glance."
Garrett shook his head, "No, I am not going to force you to read books and I'm not going to force you to anything Lieutenant." He sighed, "No, this is not going on your record. You promised, I believe to take into consideration a possibility of a cursory glance. So I suppose I'll have to take that."
Myne exhales with obvious relief and relaxes. "Thank you sir, that is a relief to hear. Phew, this was very intense so far, really really intense. So... anything else you would like to know about me? Believe me, aside from not being able to control my mouth, I'm a good officer. Or so they say."
"I know you are a good officer Lieutenant otherwise you wouldn't be assigned to this ship." Garrett replied evenly. "I don't know, is there anything you would like to tell me?"
Smiling and laughing nervously Myne looks a bit guilty at him, fidgeting and playing with her fingers. "Erm... I have several lifetimes of experiences in my head telling me to keep my mouth shut on that subject. I erm, like to collect stuff, build small gadgets and things, that kind of stuff. Not sure what to say sir, though I guess thank you for the compliment? If that is what it was, or word of encouragement. I just want to say actually sir, I am really excited and hopeful and excited for this assignment. And I cannot wait to show that I am worth being here sir."
"It was indeed a compliment Lieutenant. You are going to do fine here. We're glad to have you. I know you will uphold the tradition of fine officers who have served aboard the Elysium. Since you are raring to go and prove your worth. I won't keep you any longer. Just know if you need to talk or have a question, my door is open."
A bit too eager and too quickly, Myne gets to her feet smiling rather happy to herself. She hadn't messed this meeting up too badly. "Thank you sir! I will make sure not to bother you too often!" With that she picked her duffle bag and nodded respectfully before backing out of the office swiftly.
Garrett shakes his head a Myne and then after a few seconds gets back to work.
