Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter
EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?
Redal: Erm, I am the Assistant to the Chief of Operations of the USS Elysium. Mostly I help Lieutenant Baeryn Whavi keep the ship up and running at peak efficiency. As well as preparing reports, system reviews and overall doing my best to offer her the support she needs to run the Operations Department smoothly. Also, I try to make her laugh to take her mind off from her many duties. You know what they say, happy boss happy life?
EPR: What made you choose that line of work?
Redal: I like computer systems a lot as well as tinkering with things. Operations is just the most versatile department in which I can explore my passions. Not to mention I do like keeping my finger on the pulse of the ship, so to say. Either that or it simply the cool kids at the Academy were all going for Ops and I wanted to be one of the cool kids. Plus, I really like learning how things work and how I can improve upon them. Operations is simply the best department to do that in.
EPR: How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?
Redal: Pressure? What pressure? Oh, erm, honestly I don't feel that much. Two hundred years ago I had my own little pi... let's just say that I am used to pressure to some degree. Especially in regards to my duties, I understand computer systems a lot better than I understand people. Honestly, that is the hardest part, talking to others. Especially when Starfleet ships have such an amalgam of people and species, from such different cultures. At times it is a bit too hard too, erm, connect. It is what I miss the most about serving on a Ferengi ship, things were always clear and the rules simple. In Starfleet everything seems a bit too complicated.
EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?
Redal: What would I say? So, the Academy pulls down the security feeds on the main computer every fourth Friday every trimester. Now, if you wanna change your records and have some fun with the Academy mainframe you... oh wait, that is not what you meant. Erm... I dunno. Do not break the rules?! Oh wait, I got a better one. Captain Garrett Lovejoy, when he was the XO, told me that being well versed in Human Culture is paramount to being a Starfleet officer. Like super important, more important than what you learn at the Academy apparently.
EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?
Redal: That would be meeting Sudra Redal, my previous host. Every memory with him at the Academy is my favorite one. I really... miss talking to him, he was always kind and patient with me, and understood me in a way that few people do. *Sniff* I am sorry, give me a moment, I'll be fine. It is just a bit hard thinking about him.
EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?
Redal: Erm, I think Avalon doesn't really like me. Not sure why. Maybe because I keep poking around in places she doesn't like. I have seen other fellow officers laugh when hearing about that, so I guess it is a funny tale? Oh wait, I actually have a funny tale! I met Commander Sthilg when I came aboard, and it was my first time seeing a Gorn. I grew up reading about how Gorns like to eat people in a lovely series of Ferengi novels. When I went in for my medical I begged him not to eat me and he started laughing. I think he found that humorous.
