Season 5: Interlude: Darkness Abounds
Location: Holodeck
607 words - 1.2 OF Standard Post Measure
Damien sighed, leaning back in his chair, book sat open on his desk. He’d been reading the same page over and over again, and the words weren’t sinking in. He’d probably read the sentence ‘When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag-End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday...’ a dozen times over, but he couldn’t seem to make it any further before getting distracted again. He wasn’t even sure what it was that was distracting him. The mission was over and there were no more reports to be made. He was off duty now that they were on shore leave. He had no reason to get distracted. Running a hand through his hair, he stood up, walking over to the replicator.
“Apple juice. Cold.” The computer beeped, before a small glass materialised in front of him. Picking it up, he quickly gulped it down, before taking the glass through to the kitchen. Leaning against the kitchen counter, he glanced at his watch. 2300 hours. He briefly considered contacting Vira, but decided against it. She was probably asleep by now. He didn’t want to wake her up. Walking back into the living room, he settled back on the sofa, and picked the book back up. Might as well try again.
“Forget it.” He muttered to himself a minute later, tossing said book back onto the table. There was no point. He couldn’t focus. Standing up, he stretched slightly, before heading towards the door. Maybe some time on the Holodeck would help clear his mind. Stepping into the corridor, he glanced down towards the end of the hallway, looking at the turbolift, before, shaking his head, and heading in the opposite direction towards the jeffries tube. The exercise would do him good.
Stopping outside the service tube, he quickly entered his access code, opening the door. Crawling inside, the door closed behind him. Glancing around, he stopped for a second, trying to remember where the closest Holodeck actually was.
“Deck 14.” He muttered to himself, before starting the climb up.
It didn’t take him long to arrive, and he quickly exited the tube, nearly bumping into a crewman as he did. “Sorry.” He said, chuckling, as he straightened up. The Crewman smiled at him, snapping off a quick salute and a, “Sir.” Before moving off. Damien sighed, running a hand through his hair. Yeah. That still felt weird. Some of these Crewman were nearly double his age, and they were the ones saluting him. Shaking his head, he started heading down the corridor. Now was not the time to be worrying about things like that. He just needed to blow off some steam.
Stepping into the Holodeck, he cleared his throat. “Computer activate program Blackford-Mordor-235.” There was a few seconds before the room shimmered slightly and changed, becoming a recreation of the final battle in the Return of the King. If he couldn’t read the book, maybe actually partaking in it would work better. Making sure that his outfit was correct, and his armour all in place, he smiled. “Computer, start program.” The room beeped and the simulated Aragorn at the front started speaking.
“Sons of Gondor, of Rohan. My brothers...” Damien smiled, mouthing the words along under his breath. He’d seen these films and read the books countless times. He could have taken on the role of Aragorn himself.
“I bid you stand, Men of the West.” As the speech finished, Damien smiled, drawing his sword, he let out a cheer along with the rest of the soldiers. ‘Time to kick some Orc ass.’ He thought to himself.
