=== USS ELYSIUM – NCC 89000 – AIRLOCK TEN - 0900 HOURS ===

Arriving at the airlock with a few minutes to spare, 1st Lieutenant Samuel Woolheater took a moment to look at his new home from the large bay windows. He had only very briefly acquainted himself with the specs for the Elysium class. She was an impressive design for sure. He took a good at the outside. There were busy work crews going all about the vessel. Delivering supplies, performing repairs and restoration and upgrades. Typical for a ship-of-the-line. There were lots of people going in and coming out. He waited until it wasn’t so busy, he had time. When it got closer to his appointment, he approached the airlock.

The United Federation of Planets flag, the Starfleet Marine Corps flag and the ship’s colors were displayed on a tri-stand. Knowing the protocol, Samuel came to attention and addressing himself to the colors saluted crisply. He was in a clean unform thanks to meeting Staff Sergeant Colton Renth earlier. Ending the salute he spoke to the officer on duty (OOD), “First Lieutenant Samuel Woolheater, requesting permission to come aboard?”

The OOD answered, “Permission granted.” Sam stepped closer to the kiosk that had been setup here for arrivals. He handed over his now corrected transfer orders on a PaDD. The OOD said, “Welcome aboard first lieutenant. And what’s your purpose in wanting to come aboard sir?” The question was a normal one. One was trained to never assume anything. Sam answered, “Reporting in for duty to my new PCS (permanent change of station).” The OOD nodded, all was normal and in order. “How are you doing sir? Any trouble getting here?” Sam thought about an answer for a split second and opted for, “Just fine. Thank you. Just glad to be here.” The OOD checked the PaDD against the computer and reconciled Sam’s earlier check in to the Starbase barracks. “And what is your duty station lieutenant?” Sam said, “Second platoon CO, Sniper/Scout.” The OOD nodded, “Everything looks to be in order lieutenant. We have a few ‘bush-wookies’ here on the ship already.” Sam commented, “Well, you never can have enough.” The OOD laughed, “Yes sir.”

Handing the PaDD back to Sam the OOD tapped a comm, =A= Escort to airlock number ten please =A= The OOD then said, “Someone will be here to escort you to Marine County in just a moment sir. Are you familiar with the Elysium class sir?” Taking the PaDD and putting it away Sam answered, “No, not really. Just what I read in the brochure.”

At that moment, a Boatswain’s mate 1 (BM1) appeared emerging from the airlock. He said, “Lieutenant? Boatswain’s mate Trevor Bell. I’m your escort to deck thirty-two.” Sam smiled, “Thank you OOD. Thank you BM1 Bell, lead on.” They exchanged pleasantries and the crewman gave Sam the world’s fastest tour from what they could see on the journey from the airlock to deck thirty-two. Elysium was busy with all kinds of repairs. Lots of people some coming onboard, looks like some leaving. Along the way, “Deck six will give you access to the shipboard arboretum. That’s of course a few decks above us. You can consult the computer if you ever get lost. I haven’t seen too many marines off deck thirty-two. But there is a lot of ship to explore when you have time sir. Deck ten is good. Repairs on it now but it got lots of shops, restaurants, holodeck access, a school. Civilian promenade. You got kids el tee?” Sam said, “No, not yet. Kind of…well…I suppose I just haven’t made the time for that sort of thing.” Bell asked, “What do you do?” Woolheater answered, “Second platoon CO and sniper.” They made some more conversation that Sam found refreshing proving that not all fleeters were terrible.

Bell continued as they rode the turbolift, “Deck nineteen is the demarcation point between the ship’s stardrive and saucer section. Most living quarters for crew are below deck fourteen.” Sam asked, “Were you a member of the crew for the last mission?” Bell answered, “Yes sir.” Sam looked at him and asked, “I heard it was pretty rough?” Bell nodded, “It was. Ended in a deck-by-deck firefight in some places. It was the most extreme circumstance that I’ve ever been in I’ll tell you that much el tee.” Sam nodded, “I can imagine. But you survived.” Trevor Bell said, “Yeah, I wasn’t going down without a fight.” Sam nodded, “I can see that small arms were used. On the deck, the corridors.” Trevor agreed, “Yeah, Starbase is gonna have to order a shitload of grey paint after we leave.” Sam smiled and chuckled, and they shared a laugh.

Exiting the turbolift on deck thirty-two, Bell was finishing up the world’s fastest tour, “…battle-bridge on twenty-three, twenty-five is the mess. Thirty-five start the starfighter decks and drop access for the fighters. Well, sir. This is where my part of the tour ends.” Sam said, “Than you Bell. I appreciate the tour. I hope I’ll see you around?” Bell said, “Yes sir. Anytime.”

=== DECK THIRTY-TWO ===

Sam touched the LCARS panel and let someone know that he was requesting access. After a moment, the doors opened and a Lance Corporal stepped out and saluted, “Lance Corporal Baty, welcome aboard Lieutenant. May I see your orders sir?” Sam got the PaDD out and Baty checked it. She was satisfied and handed it back. “Thank you, Lieutenant. Welcome to Marine County.”

Baty was all business, “Your quarters are Corridor ‘N’ as in ‘Nora’, Cabin 12. I’ll show you to your quarters if you’ll follow me sir?” “Thank you, Lance Corporal, I’d appreciate that.” As they walked the only thing she said was, “So? You’re the new second platoon commander?” Sam suppressed a laugh. Her question sounded so deflating; Woolheater let it go. He hadn’t yet read the reports of how the MARDET had fared or what they had done. Sam simply said, “Yeah. That’s me.”

Baty said, “We heard that some motarded, dumb-ass marine got on the wrong ship and had to be jettisoned in a torpedo to get here. What a dumb-ass! Glad to know that it wasn’t you Lieutenant” she said with disdain. Sam just took it on the chin. “Yeah…” and kept his mouth shut.

“Here we are el tee. Cabin Nora Twelve. Sam stepped inside. It was a very nice space. Clean and comfortable. It even had a window. Woolheater set his things down. Baty was still standing there and he said, “This will do nicely. Thank you.” She said, “Come on, I’ll show you the rest.”

‘The rest’ was even faster than what he got from Boatswain’s Mate Bell. “These are the barracks for the people who work, here are their lockers, their coffin racks. That’s the head. You’ll have to use the head and share the showers Lieutenant. I hope you don’t mind?” Sam said, “Not at all. Very efficient.” After a bit they ended up at the galley. “Here’s the galley and mess hall. If there’s nothing else?”

Sam said, "Thank you Baty. Nothing else" he answered. "Who is the OOD now?" Without missing a beat, she touched the nearest LCARS panel and looked it up, “We have these things, they’re called computers. According to this computer, the officer-on-duty starts his shift in twenty-minutes. That would be you. Sir.” Woolheater came alongside and looked at the panel, “Well ain’t that grand? Thank you, Lance Corporal.” Baty walked away and Sam let her go saying softly, mostly to himself, “You’re dismissed.”

Sam went back to his new quarters to unpack his stuff, get some coffee and report for duty pulling his first OOD and not knowing shit.
