After receiving the news and hearing back about the position of the Chief Diplomatic Officer onboard the USS Elysium, Orin knew that he would have to tell his bosses at the Diplomatic Corps on Earth. He was scared, nervous, excited. A little bit of everything all mixed up into one big bag of Orin and Andrinn.
As he walked from his apartment in San Francisco to the Diplomatic Complex near Starfleet Headquarters, Andrinn took in all of the sights and sounds that he had taken in for well over a century by this point. But, something about it had Andrinn looking especially hard this morning because he knew that it was the morning that he told his bosses that he was transferring to the Elysium and he wasn't sure how they'd take it.
Walking in through the front door of the Trill Embassy on Earth, it was abuzz with life. Diplomats from all over the Milky Way Galaxy were meeting in various spots throughout the complex. Someone was always using words in anger because they didn't get what they wanted from someone else, but knew that they'd have to compromise. So, they weren't happy and were always yelling about something.
Andrinn walked over to the row of turbolifts and the first one that he picked opened right up for him. He had some of the highest and oldest diplomatic authority for all of the Trill Ambassadors, so most of the stuff like the turbolifts would come for him more instantly than for the more junior diplomats on the Trill team.
He walked inside and ordered the Turbolift to the top floor, where the head Ambassador's Office was and it took mere moments for the lift to deposit Andrinn onto the level. Stepping out and looking about, Andrinn smiled when he saw that the office to the door was wide open and he could hear Ambassador Farhal yelling at someone from inside the office. Walking over and standing just outside the office doors, as he watched the exchange, Andrinn couldn't help but snicker because he knew that Farhal was a big softie at heart.
When he was done with the diplomat that he was working with, Andrinn stepped just inside the doorway of Farhal's office and knocked on the frame of the door. "Ambassador Farhal? Do you have a minute?" Andrinn said as he watched the Ambassador turn back to see who it was before a smile formed on his face.
Coming back to his head and pointing to the row of seats in front of it, Farhal said, "Andrinn! Come in and take a seat. Tell me what's on your mind!" Andrinn walked into the office and took the middle seat, which was the one he usually sat at when there was ever a meeting between him and Farhal. Taking a seat, Andrinn pulled out the PADD that he had received when he got the transfer orders to become the CDO of the Elsyium.
Andrinn handed the PADD over and said, "I....just wanted to let you know personally that I've put in for a request to be transferred over to the USS Elsyium to become the Chief Diplomatic Officer. They had an opening and I needed a change. So, I thought why not apply and....they accepted the transfer. It's nothing against you or the embassy, but I just knew that I needed a change because I've been here for so long. That's why I wanted to come to you before you saw the transfer through the comm logs."
Farhal just looked over all the information within the PADD and stroked his gotee. He didn't say anything for a few more moments, making Andrinn a bit worried that he might've upset his boss. That wasn't his intention, but Andrinn knew that he wasn't going to move up in the universe unless he took some risks.
As the emotions and thoughts were floating around his head and right before he was about to say something else, Farhal smiled and said, "Well, congratulations on the transfer, Mr. Orin! I know the CO from the grapevine and she will definitely make you feel welcome, as I assume the crew will as well. Why didn't you tell me about this sooner?"
Andrinn audibbly let out a sigh of relief once he heard the words coming from his boss and a mentor of his. Hearing the question posed by the Ambassador, it took Andrinn a moment before he could truly think of an answer....an honest answer.
He wasn't sure why he didn't mention this to the Ambassador. Andrinn thought of this man as a mentor, even though he was younger than him. As he thought about it, one of the biggest things came up over and over again. Looking at the younger man, Andrinn said, "I didn't want to be a disappointment to you, sir. You've given me so much over the years and have helped me to grow as a person that I didn't want to lose or disappoint you. I guess....I got scared about the future for a few moments."
Farhal looked the older man over once or twice before he let out a sigh himself. He could tell that Andrinn was having a time with this and said, "You could never disappoint me. You've been one of my best diplomats and I couldn't have asked for anyone better. But, can you make me a promise when you head out there into the galaxy? Can you promise me that you won't keep anything to yourself like you did with me today? Cause I can tell that you put yourself into everything that you do and you need to remember that everyone will love you for you, as long as you open up to them. Just remember that."
Andrinn just sat there and listened to his mentor as he spoke those beautiful words. A tear formed in his eyes and Andrinn had to wipe them away as they continued to form. Andrinn was at a loss for words and couldn't believe that he was viewed in such high regards, but he appreciated it nonetheless. He had always had to push towards excellence and was glad that his work was finally paying off. Looking back at the Ambassador, Andrinn smiled and replied, "Thank you, sir. That means a lot to me honestly. I don't even know what to say except that I will try. That's part of the reason why I did this. It was because I knew that I had been stuck for a bit and needed some new challenges. Not that there aren't plenty here....especially with the Tellarites, Vulcans, Andorians, ect. But, I knew that there was so much more out in the universe that I could try. So, I told myself to do it. I just wanted you to be proud of me. I wanted everyone to be proud of me. Thank you for your kind words, sir. I'll be here for another two to three weeks and then, I head off to the Elysium. Again, thank you for everything."
Farhal just smiled and said, "No, thank you, Mr. Orin. You've made this place better with your grace and presence. You're going to be missed. Now, go out there and get to work before I kick your butt out there."
Andrinn just laughed and replied, "Yes, sir. I've got a meeting with the Klingons and the Ferengi. You know that's going to be an interesting meeting."
Andrinn stood up after begin dismissed and as he walked out of the office, he turned back and could hear the ambassador getting on the comms and telling someone that they would need a new diplomat because Orin was leaving. He couldn't help but smile when he heard the Ambassador said he was going to miss that big guy. Andrinn walked out and head towards the Conference Rooms that were assigned to him for the day and towards the next few weeks of working back on Earth before he left.
