Yuto Yamoshita continued to search for help. His skin felt cold and clammy. His breathing was coming rapid fire, just as his heart rate seemed to not slow down. He looked at his hands. Seeing the gray-blue tint under his fingernails caused Yamoshita concern. If he could see his lips, he would have notice the same hue.

His body seemed to not want to move. Hurting all over and feeling tired, Yuto tried to push on, but couldn’t. He sat down, his back against the wall. He felt himself drooping to one side. Try as he might, Yamoshita couldn’t catch his breath.

His leg was throbbing. He had tried to ignore the pain like a Vulcan should, but he couldn’t. Not be raised as a Vulcan, Yuto couldn’t ignore his pain. He couldn’t suppress his fear as he felt his body failing him, going further in shock.

He tried once more. “I. Am. Vulcan,” he mustered in a whisper. “There is no pain. There is no ah-aaahh!”

He tried to stay awake. Yamoshita thought he would let others down if he didn’t direct them to the shuttle bay. He was afraid if he closed his eye, he would never reopen them.

Yuto looked down at his skewed left leg. He was certain it was broken. He closed his eyes as things began to get hazy. He saw lights dancing before his eyes. Growing up on Terra, Yuto had often heard of others seeing the light coming to take them to the afterlife. He was certain that’s what it was.

He could hear voices now. “Got one here. It appears his leg is broken.”

“This man is in shock,” another voice replied. “Turn his body and have him lay on his back. Put something under his feet. Get a medic up here!”

“Others,” Yamoshita managed to say, pointing toward the shuttle bay.

“Hanson! Johansen!” came an authoritative voice. “Get into that bay and report! Where’s that medic!”

“Here sir!”

As the world faded, Yuto heard the sound of a medical tricorder. The last words he heard were, “We got here just in time!”
