"We can not miss this because you're having one of your Trill Temper Tantrums!" Exclaimed Jisaa the eldest of the two Orion twins. Even if it was only by a few minutes but it meant that they were technically born on different days Jisaa was born two minutes before midnight and Threshi who was standing across the room looking in the mirror scowling at her stockman boots that had an intricate woven design around then.

Octavia emerged from the en-suite wearing her own boots, Crossfire Picante Western Boots in addition to her blue swirling lines she also had spots that matched her own Trill spots, she was also wearing a pair of blue denim jeans which were tucked into her boots, a brown leather belt that had a large silver buckle which sported a picture of her families crest and a black low cut cropped long sleeve shirt. "I'm not having a tantrum but you know how I feel about karaoke, you always get me to sing and I always feel embarrassed, then we drink too much and I have the worst headache!" She moaned.

Michelle was listening as she pulled her left boot over her foot and tucked in her jeans. "Oh come of it Tai, you say the exact same thing every time the Genie has a karaoke throw-down and you sing that song what is it the good at something or whatever..." Before Michelle could finish her sentence the Trill fourth year cut her off causing her best friend to place her hands on her hips annoyed.

"It's called Somethin' I'm Good At sung by Brett Eldredge, who by the way is the single most handsome man from her to the delta quadrant. Shame time travel isn't permitted." Octavia chuckled shocking her head and taking another sip of her drink.

Threshi clicked her finger, "So that's the issue! You haven't gotten yourself a male slave as half the ship's female population does. Honestly, the Elysium puts us Orion to shame!" Her sister nodded in agreement as she drank from her champagne flute. "So what is this celebration for? I swear you find any excuse to have us drink this awful human beverage and sing terribly."

"It's to celebrate the passing of the human calendar from one year into the next, there's singing, dancing, drinking and at midnight we kiss someone we like or eat 12 grapes I can't remember to be honest." Michelle looked to Octavia who was the more educated in Earth traditions despite being Trill she showed a large interest in their culture, they always joked that she was more Human than Humans.

"The twelve grape thing is Spanish, and they stopped doing that a very long time ago" Tai corrected, "But yes the rest is right, except you don't have to kiss anyone if you don't want to." She looked between the group of girls, "Then again I don't think you girls need any excuse to kiss anyone." They all looked very cowgirl, and in the words of Marcus "HAWT!" These were the exact words he said when they made their way out of their shared quarters and into the corridor where the boys were waiting.

"You girls look..." He was cut of with them all and Carl their other male friend said the word "HAWT" in unison and then burst out laughing. Carl shrugged and smiled, "Well can't say I'm not predictable, now come on we're already running late and they said they'll hold the table for another fifteen minutes. And I for one don't plan on standing for the next five hours in these boots you've made us wear Taichelle" Taichelle being the name they called the friends Octavia and Michelle.

The journey down to deck ten was short and mostly full of Marcus and Carl flirting with the Orion twins whilst Octavia and Michelle rolled their eyes and told them to get a room. Octavia had zero desire to be matched up with anyone, Michelle would joke and exclaim that she had taken a vow of celibacy. Nonetheless, she just hadn't met anyone or even had an idea of who that person would be and so she just didn't look.

"Wow, it's busy tonight!" Carl said as they walked through the promenade where most of the shops were still open for late night shopping and of course making the most out of the increased clientele celebrating the Human new years party." Every drinking establishment and restaurant had its own themes from the deck of cards, boys vs girls and of course country. The Whisky Genie would usually be serving food but today they had more room for the dance floor and tables spilling out onto the street to accommodate the influx of people.

The group quickly made their way to the waiter, "Table for Raain," Tai said waiting nervously even though she knew with absolute certainty she'd booked weeks in advance, after a short pause the waiter found their booking and showed them to the table where the complementary bottle of Cardassian Whisky and six glasses waited for them. He took their individual orders. Tai asked for their mock moonshine since it was banned before the federation was a thing due to the high level of alcohol-related deaths, this contained a fraction but still enough to feel the effect. The Orion sisters order Orion Wine and a shot of Ferengi Furnace Sambuca for everyone, Michelle followed Octavia's example and ordered the moonshine (of course) and the two boys ordered the Steiner Lonestar beer and a shot of whisky for everyone.

"You know we still have like four and a half hours before midnight right?" Octavia pointed out to the large clock display that had been projected on the ceiling. "Lets not over do it?" Her protesters were quickly drowned out by the music spinning up followed by a loud cheer and their drinks arriving. The first song of the night she didn't recognize but the console on their table (a bit like a PADD that displayed the menu and music choices that you could select on a normal night) showed that it was Florida Georgia Line - Simple.

As the main chorus approached the bartender returned with their drinks and a selection of nachos and dips in the background the chorus carried forward the mood of the night;

Ain't no need to complicate it
We both know that's overrated
We've been there, it's safe to say it ain't our style
It's just that simple, S-I-M-P-L-E
Simple as can be

"So the Karaoke starts in thirty minutes, shall we warm ourselves up?" Michelle asked pointing to where a few of the crew and civilians and diplomatic attache were line dancing, it was a simple walk two three kick but you could tell the more experienced from the not-so by the way they shacked their hips and threw their arms about as if almost dancing with two separate bodies.

"Sure," Octavia said but not before she snatched a shot of whisky and finished it in one fluid motion, it was in fact going to be one of those notes she decided. They reached the dance floor and hopped into the line between her Michelle was an older Klingon man who awkwardly stepped out of sync but seemed to be having fun. Who knows? The song changed now to Rock me, shuttle baby, by Tahr Th'shennir a remake of Darius Ruckers 21st century version Wagon Wheel. Tai started slowly swinging her hips along with most of the other woman, the men moved around them before they all split into lines meaning she was now a few people away from Michelle. Jisaa had joined them but she was near the front... Obviously. They began like before with a two-three step but now they were adding in some twist and a clap.

Headin' out now too old Tellar prime
I'm thumbin' my way into North Ka'roline
Starin' out the window and praying to myself I see starlight
I made it across the sect' in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of Tellar Marshwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Cha'leigh, I can see my baby tonight

So, rock me mama like a shuttle will
Rock me mama any way you feel
Hey... mama rock me

Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a Risa-bound train
Hey... mama rock me

The dance had evolved and Tai was now; Front step, left behind, Right step to the side, left brush forward, right behind, toe strut forward, right quarter joust, back into a jazz box and a side mumbo and finally a rocking chair to end the line before starting the dance again. For the fanatic line dancer (and there weren't many as fanatic as Tai and Michelle ever since her Texan friend introduced her to it back at the academy it was simple but effective. Most line dances was simple and that's why tai liked it, Michele always said she had the hips for it.

The song finished and Octavia felt her hand being pulled back to the table, she knew the soft touch fo Jisaa and back at the table she found all her friends waiting for a 'ring of fire game waiting for her. "Oh come on you guys really? We have like twenty minutes until the karaoke and you are all terrible when you're slurring your little words." She joked the mock moonshine and whisky already warming her soul.

"Octavia, you know this is tradition! We can not start any good night without a good old fashion academy game of ring of fire!" Marcus declared as they began playing. The game more or less went the same way it always did, at first it was any reason not to drink before it went to any reason too drink. The bartender had been keeping their drinks topped, as any good barman would and the night was going well. The karaoke had started an hour ago but they were to busy enjoying themselves. After a particularly fun rendition of Planet like a backroad Michelle finally paused the game declaring herself as winner and the rest fo them as losses by 1. downing her drink and 2 planting an L on her forward.

"Right Octavia, I think you're ready! We want to hear you sing girl!" She grabbed the Trills hand and dragged her to the booth where the DJ was waiting to take their request. He was dressed perhaps a little too over the top for any country boy or girl for that matter, especially for Romulan.

"What will it be ladies?" He asked but before Octaivai could speak Michelle spoke for her, "She'll be singing Something I'm good at but just play the instrumental version, she had her own lyrics" she said proudly!

"Alrighty then, the crowd are pretty fired so go get erm." He said as the backing tune began to play and he pointed to the stage and solo mic.

Octavia rolled her eyes, "I don't have a choice do I?" She said begrudgingly just as she turned to go on stage Carl arrived and trusted another shot of green liquid in front of her "For luck" He added. Taking the drink she sniffed at it and then drank the sour flavour burning her throat. "Yuk What is that?" She asked. handing the glass back in distain and pretending to clean her mouth out.

"Some kind of Klingon Apple sour?" He shrugged and hurried off.

The Trill turned around and went up to the Mic, she was small for her age and there were a few points and chuckles, she always looked like the shy timid girl. She loved proving them wrong. She began swaying and tapping her thighs waiting for the point to start singing. She could see all her friends jeering and clapping at their table, there were a lot of people there.

The music continued and then it was time, she began to sing her own version of Brett Eldredge's - Something I'm Good At.

I'm a real bad liar, I'm a warp-speed kinda Gal
Or if I try to raise a tribble I'd raise them all
I ain't a mover or a shaker, can't keep up with the pacer
Never met a dancefloor that ever did me any good

I can't change the world, no I can't change a core
If you give me your heart, boy, well, you may never get it back
You said you'd never smile again, but oh no, here it comes
Would you look at that?
I finally found somethin' I'm good at

I got a poor sense of direction, sometimes too strong of affection
For a whiskey made in Treeburn, Dekandii three
If there's a hole in my boat son, you bet that's all he wrote
I'm the Kobyashu blowing up into that D.M.Z

Octavia was getting into it now, she was swaying, clapping and dancing whilst singing on the stage and she'd amassed a few people including her friends on the dance floor, the final of the song eventually come;

I can't change the world, no I can't change a flat
If you give me your heart, boy, well, you may never get it back
You said you'd never smile again, but oh no, here it comes
Would you look at that?
I finally found somethin' I'm so good at
Hahaha, engage!

As she finished winked and quickly and swiftly joined her friends on the dance floor as the next person took their spot on the stage, another Cadet who she recognised but couldn't put a name to face.

"That was great, you should sing so much more you'd actually find a boy!" Michelle said as the song started behind her and they made their way back to the table where of course a fresh round of drinks and some chicken wings waited.

A few songs went by and the time edged closer to midnight when another one of their favourites come on, a classic and the answer to her burning question as to why the dance floor has a grate around it. The song in question was displayed on a computer screen in the middle of the table as Luke Combs's - When it rains it pours and Octavia looked to see what she was wearing - good black. She eyes the others and saw the Orion twins wearing white and she hoped they were wearing bras.

"You know what this means!" Jisaa said with a smile, "Let's get wet!" They all made their way to the dance floor where the floor had started to swell with people equally excited to join in on the antics. The dance was possibly the hardest of the night with 32 counts, two wall, one tag and two restarts...

Then I won a hundred bucks on a scratch-off ticket
Bought two 12-packs and a tank of gas with it
She swore they were a waste of time
Oh, but she was wrong
And I was caller number five on a radio station
Won a four day three-night beach vacation
Deep sea seƱorita fishin' down in Panama
And I ain't gotta see my
Ex-future-mother-in-law anymore
Oh Lord, when it rains it pours
When it rains it pours

The song was nearing its finale when the sprinklers came on and it quite literally poured, the effect was instant as everyone seemed to pick up the pace and the DJ played another verse of the song which meant as they went into their steps they splashed and flicked water up around.

After the song finished the group and anyone in close proximity of the dance floor was wet but they were all smiling and in good spirits as everyone clapped. This time the same academy boy returned to the stage and looked directly at Octavia. She looked behind her but besides a pillar that held up the top floor, she was all that he could have been looking at. The song started and her stomach dropped;

Hey girl, go on now!
You know you've got everybody lookin'
Got a little boom in my big truck
Gonna open up the doors and turn it up
Gonna stomp my boots in the Georgia mud
Gonna watch you make me fall in love
Get up on the hood of my daddy's tractor
Up on the toolbox, it don't matter
Down on the tailgate
Girl I can't wait
To watch you do your thing

Heart in mouth she didn't exactly know when Michelle had dragged her onto the table, nor did she know she was dancing. "Come on Octavia just let go! He likes you!" She teased bumping her and using her as well.. a pole. The chorus brought Octavia back to the room and she finally started some form of dance. Eventually, she made it off the table and back onto the dance floor with the help of Marcus and she swore she'd eject anyone out of an airlock if they so much as tried it with her this drunk.

The song finished and the guy who sang thankfully didn't come over, apparently, another woman had got their first and distracted him long enough to allow her to escape, besides it was almost midnight now. Sitting back at the table it was five to midnight, Octavia's feet hurt and she was soaked but overall she was happy, much happier than she had been the past few weeks so she had her friends to thank for that.

By the time the gang had all returned the thirty-second counter was displayed and they were all standing will little explosive paper boxes that shot string out of them and whistles that had weird noises and coiled and uncoiled as you blew them. Weird.

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!" - Octavia turned and hugged her friends and most certainly didn't kiss anyone that night.
