Gary sat in the operations building it was the nerve center for planet. He was waiting for Victor Barclay de Tolly the Elysium's chief engineer. He wanted to get a first-hand report from Victor on just how badly the Elysium was hurt and an extremely ballpark estimate on how long repairs would take to get the Elysium livable and begin the long journey home.
As he waited for Victor, Gary reflected on how lucky they were. It seemed odd to think like that, but they were despite losing over thirty percent of the crew and the crippling damage to the ship. They were alive and had shelter even if it was on an ice cube of a world. They were taking care of the wounded both the physically wounded and those with mental trauma. Phoenix was recovering from her injury but not yet ready to resume command of the Elysium.
Victor walked in to the operations building holding a PADD which consisted of a list of the seven engineers who had died. Plus it had how bad Engineering was hit. Victor always a stickler for military protocol spoke first after he saluted Gary. “Captain Taylor,” he said as breath paused. “I have here my report but I rather give it to you verbally. We lost seven engineers. One was Cadet Travis Trent, he is the nephew of Ambassador Annabelle Angelis. The Engineering Department got blindsided like we all did but you will see in my report, it would have been worse. Thanks to team work and the Marines, I feel optimistic we will be able to succeed Sir.”
Gary took the PaDD and skimmed over it. "I am sorry Victor, the people we lost, the number is overwhelming." He paused, "No department was spared however I am pleased to hear that you are optimistic about repairing the Elysium." Gary went on, we're going to rotate repair teams to the Elysium to begin repairs with priority given to life support and the engines with shields right behind." He paused, "Your thoughts?"
“Like our Vulcan friends would say sir,” Victor smiled, “That would be logical. Once we get life support fully optimal, we will be able to handle the engines with the shields.” Victor’s face shifted back to seriousness. “I do hope the marines who have been helping us will continue to help us. A few of them have Engineering background. “
"I don't see why they wouldn't Victor however if the balk at continuing to help you, 'request' them which means order them and if that doesn't work, say I ordered them to help you for as long as they are needed." Gary replied firmly.
“Thank you Sir,” Victor replied, “I will keep you informed of any setbacks which I feel confidently there would be none. If there are no other updates, I do have happy news. My wife Tonya is expecting. We conceived a child on our wedding night. She is strictly doing logistics now as in handling parts we need to requisition and making sure the replicators are working functionally on the ship. Lt. Napoleon Bond is the main engineer who repairs the replicators , followed by Ensign Lorelei Lee. We were about to get an Assistant Chief of Engineering which has not shown up yet, so Bond will be the Acting Assistsnt Chief until we get one.”
Gary's face broke into a happy smile, "That is wonderful news Victor! Congratulations to you and Tonya. I hope her pregnancy proceeds normally with no problems." He then switched back to the business at hand. "I am sure both Mr. Bond and Ensign Lee are up to the challenge. Thank you letting me know and I will tell the Commodore that Mr. Bond is also acting assistant chief and we can discuss any questions or problems with him if you are unavailable." Gary replied.
“We need to come up with a plan so this will never happen again,” Victor said as they got back to the business at hand. “We need to come with a way to protect our backup equipment. If we get hit by another anomaly, we need to be prepared. If anything hits the whole ship, we need emergency equipment protected in a Pod that could withstand everything from an EMP Pulse to an electrical storm. I do have several ideas like what satellite dishes are made from. It has to be non metallic due to electrical storms.”
"I couldn't agree more Victor, that is both an excellent and prudent idea. A safeguard option is exactly what we need an I think your idea of a pod or storage boxmade of non-metallic material is the way to go. It will insure that we will have equipment to use." Gary commented.
“Tonya and I are working with the replicators to experiment what will work best,” Victor said as he saw Tarr Zell, the Ingavi Engineer walking up. “Tarr, what’s up?”
“Lieutenant,” Tarr said smiling, “We were going through the equipment in storage and the ship replicator we placed there, it was barely hurt. We think we could get it working in a week.”
“Delay that,” Victor said, “We have to get approval from the Senior Staff, that unless the Captain here wants us to repair it. If you recall, Starfleet asked us to get approval and one felt we were playing God. So we just boxed it. So we have three options Sir, we repair it, we refurbish it to create an enormous replicator capable of creating many things from protective Pods to weapons and the third option where we just box it back up.”
Gary listened to the options Victor laid out before him. After a moment's hesitation he spoke. "Option two Victor. Refurbish it so we can use it for wide range of possibilities. One that every department can make use of if need be. I believe that to be the most beneficial for everyone." Gary replied.
“That would be the wisest decision,” Victor answered, “Considering the circumstances because survival is of he upmost Sir. That should take about three to four days then instead of taking a whole week and if we ever desire a ship replicator, I will have Tonya requisition a new one. Anything else Sir?”
Gary shook his head, "No Victor. I think that covers everything and I have already taken enough of your time. If anything, else arises I will let you know. If you run into any delays, please let me know so I can make the necessary announcement."
“Agreed,” Victor replied.
