Alice was sitting alone feeling melancholy in Ten Forward lounge drinking a margarita. She was staring at the stars when Athena walked up to her table.
“May I join you?” Athena asked cordially.
“By all means,” Alice said. “I am having Margaritas. Today is Phillips’s birthday. That is my husband who went missing when he was serving on the USS Florida.”
Athena grinned. “I like margaritas, pina coladas, walking in the rain…., “ Athena paused for a moment. “So what happen to the Florida?”
Alice sighed. “The Florida was not his regular ship. The Captain of the ship went to a conference, our trip was in dry dock, so Phillip went to fill in. There was a batte on the second day of some ship they had never seen before, there was an explosion and both ships were gone. There was a little debris but not conclusive to say kill in action.”
“Wow,” Athena replied, “That must be tough to bare. I understand your grief.”
Alice’s eyebrow went up. Athena had no tact but Alice understood she was trying. “Very true. So today is his birthday. He and I use to drink margaritas.”
“Well I like margaritas but my favorite mixed drinks are vodka martinis,” Athena smiled as she picks up a margarita. Thor likes beer and meade.”
“My father liked the honey wine,” Alice said tipping Alice’s glass.
A few of the other engineers walked up as more joined in the celebration. They all understood it is important to celebrate life, instead of mourning a lost.
One of the Engineers named Chief Petty Officer Jarred Cartier interjected. “My wife Rosie was on the Florida when it went missing. Every day I still think she is out in the universe trying to get home.”
“What did she do on the Florida and did you two have any children?” Alice asked.
“She was a botanist and she was pregnant and the time,” Jarred replied.
“Oh my,” Athena said, “I sure hope they are okay.”
Alice and Jarred both sighed.
“He has been gone for five years,” Alice said as she looked at the window. “Wherever he is, I sure hope he is okay.”
Athena was no counselor but she did have experience as a friend. “Well we must honor him. If he is out there, I am sure he is thinking about you as well.”
“Look at Voyager,” Alice added, “They were missing for years until they were discovered to still be alive.”
“Hope comes from Faith and Love,” Jarred said as he poured himself a drink. “We must never give up. I miss my Rosie.”
“I am sure you do,” Alice breathed in.
A few more officers walked up as they all poured themselves a drink. Each one recounted what they were greatful for.
After the party was over with, Athena made sure Alice got back to her quarters okay. Athena felt after she left Alice, she had made a new friend. She was thankful Thor, their son and herself were all together on one ship.
