Mission: Season 2: Episode 3: Determination is not always a good thing
Location: Anje's Office
Timeline: after arriving at DS9
619 words - 1.2 OF Standard Post Measure

Anje sat in her darkened office, alone, sipping on some of Dr. Sthilg's special blend coffee, realizing after the first sip that it was something that had to be done slowly, "Could fuel a T-34 all the way to Berlin with a cup of this." She laughed, slowly, almost at a stop, taking another drink as she prepared for the first major report of her Elysium career, "Computer, begin recording."

=Beginning Recording=

"Final operational report and mission summary for Ops, USS Elysium in regard to Cortic VI disaster and relief operations." Anje began, taking another blast of the powerful brew, "Lt. Cdr. Anje Brett reporting."

"Casualty numbers are still not exact from the series of tremors and related disasters, though Cortic Home Guard estimates loss of life in the tens of thousands. Injuries in the millions, as are the numbers of people left homeless or otherwise displaced." Anje said, shuddering a little at exactly how bad the news was, but forced herself to continue.

"There's no exact monetary value on damages done to the planet's infrastructure." She relayed, "But with the entire planet set to be evacuated I don't expect an assessment to be completed."

"In regard to the destruction of the charity relief vessel, SS Nightingale, the death toll is now confirmed at fifty eight." That made her pause for a second, she had to take a deep breath before continuing, "Thirty six Cortic refugees, ranging in age from six months to ninety four years old, twenty two crew, including the Captain, Robert Fergie, a thirty year Starfleet veteran and silver star winner, and Mother Harila, a finalist for the Federation Peace Prize in 2366 and 89."

"In response to Cdr. Taylor's question as to why they warped into the system inside of the perimeter set up to keep vessels out of the range of the orbital cannon..." Anje stopped and drained her coffee, this was the part that was really bothering her, "Someone from the Cortic disaster authorities, possibly from the Home Guard, encoded the message. If they did receive the message, they couldn't translate it. Fifty eight lives were lost because some dumb bastard wanted to play 'Enigma' with a warning beacon..."

"Computer, strike that last comment from the official record." Anje ordered, she meant what she said, but she knew the official report had to be military, "Efforts to identify the responsible party have thus far proven fruitless." That was saying the least of it, so far all she'd gotten had been finger pointing and denials from various politicians, hadn't heard anything from Col. vel-Cro yet, but she and her troops at least had the alibi of being busier than Hell.

"No major injuries to report amongst the Elysium crew." Anje continued, finally hitting a part that gave her reason to smile, "Lt. JG Gallia Norris sprained an ankle and bruised some ribs in a fall, multiple crew members were sickened by an as yet unknown virus planetside, though Lt. Cdr. Hertz and Lt. Cdr. Sthilg worked in concert to cure the virus and we can report no loss of life amongst the crew."

"Summary: relief efforts on Cortic VI were successful beyond reasonable expectation in the wake of a disaster of this magnitude, especially coupled with the instances of violence, rioting, and criminal activity we faced as well as the viral threat." Anje finished, then stood to leave, it was time to look ahead to newer, better things, "Computer, stop recording and transmit to Capt. Phoenix Lalor and Cdr. Gary Taylor on USS Elysium for distribution to relevant higher authority."

=Recording stopped.=

"Good night, computer." Anje smiled, walking out into the brightly lit corridor and thinking about going for a swim.

-Off
