USS ELYSIUM – EXTERIOR – DOCKED AT THE A’JANIE SHIP

Captain Samuel Woolheater used a tricorder to scan the area where Private Corelli was attacked, he squats down and scans the area closely while his personal log is recorded:

(V.O.) =A= Marine Captain’s log. Stardate 75173.8. There are only two hours to go before I have to make my report to the Colonel and then turn over the investigation of Marine Private Christopher Corelli’s attack to ship’s Security. This junction, “W-23” is a highly trafficked area. Which is itself concerning that no one heard anything. I am beginning to get a bad feeling that the problem goes deeper and further than anyone thinks. DNA reveals every marine on the deck was here. We’ve searched the sleeping areas and common areas as well. Corelli mentioned that the attackers wore balaclava masks and voice modulators. I’ve been searching for those too, but time is running out. =A=

“You need any help, Captain?” asked Lance Corporal Evan Griffin.

Sam got to his feet holding the tricorder and closed it after saving the scans. “Corporal” he said with firmness and then a long sigh.

“That bad huh Cap?” the Marine Sapper asked.

“There’s been too much activity here. Even the tricorder scans that we took on the day of the attack have been botched. I’m going to have my ass handed to me when I report this…tragedy…to the Colonel”. Sam rubbed his eyes and then looked at the younger man, “What’s your duty station today Corporal?”

Evan answered, “Joining ship’s Security at 1600 for patrol. Making sure that they know the ship and we know the ship. Y’know…for the fight?”

Sam nodded, “Yeah. The fight that everybody knows is coming. Well, I’m going to download this tricorder and see what I can find. Listen? Griffin? That night, when Corelli was attacked, did you happen to hear anything?”

Evan shook his head ‘no’, “My bunk is three bulkheads that way” here he indicated with a hand motion away from him and even though I go this way to get to Armory, I didn’t go this way yesterday, the day of the attack. I slept in you know?”

Sam nods, “What about Fenrir? Does he sleep in your area?”

“Negative. Dogs are kept in the kennel unless supervised by their handler. Since I’m the only handler, Fenrir was asleep in his kennel.” Griffin answered and then asked, “Whatcha thinking sir?”

“I was just thinking…hoping really…that Fenrir maybe was near you in your berth and heard something? I could take a look at the footage and see if the animal responded or looked. Or if anyone came back into the sleeping areas. That’s one thing that I can’t account for. No one, on any feed, returns to the sleeping areas. And yet, no one was not in their bunk.” Sam shook his head and put his hand on the shoulder, “I suppose this’ll just have to end up on Security’s plate after all. It’s the lack of anything concrete that irritates me. There’s nothing to go on other than a Marine who ended up in sickbay.”

Evan watched Samuel start to walk away and said, “Yeah, if this were an explosion; it’d be way easier.”

Sam smirked, “Oh? How?”

Evan said, “Well, for one there would be a blast radius. Kinetic energy or thermal there’d be a definite flashpoint. Something where everything from that point goes outward. Unless, of course, you use graviton weapons, and you implode. But nobody does that. So, yeah, hell there’s be ripples all over the place. Just like dropping a stone in the water.”

Sam cocked his head, “Yeah…huh. Like a stone in the water…”. He said to himself and then the wheels in his mind started turning. “Ripples…”

“Sorry I couldn’t be more help Cap”, Evan said and nodded to Sam as he left.

Sam nodded, “You may have given me one though Corporal.”

“Sir?” he asked.

“An idea” he said and then closed the tricorder and left the marine deck.
