734 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure
Kara had heard the rumours. Nothing got past her, not in engineering anyway. From her office in Main Engineering she tapped her comm-badge. =A= Crewman Justice, can you report to the Chief Engineer's office please. =A=
Kara had heard Crewman Justice might be thinking of leaving the Elysium. It was Kara's duty as her department senior, to see if there's anything she could do to help the situation.
Great, Sami thought, now Gallia's girlfriend is going to try and get me to stay. Shaking it off, she headed to the Chief Engineer's office and walked in, coming to attention, "Reporting as ordered, sir."
Kara shook her head. "Relax Samantha, please have a seat. Would you like some tea?" Kara asked, her tone kind and almost motherly.
"Uh, tea, sure." Sami nodded; what could tea hurt after all?
Kara stood, heading to the replicator. "Two cinnamon Chai tea's, hot, please." The two mugs arrived and she picked them up, placing one beside Samanatha and taking the other one back to her position at her desk as she sat. The room filled with the zingy smell of cinnamon.
"So Samantha, I think you know why I've asked you here. I'll explain anyway. I've heard that you're wanting to leave the Elysium. I wanted to ask, if there is anything I can do as your department head to make things easier for you. I know that fighting for you to stay, well it wouldn't be healthy, you've probably got a good reason why you wish to leave right?" Kara asked politely, taking a sip of her tea.
"I just wanted you to know that no matter where you go, or for how long you go. There will always be a place for you here. I'll make sure of it."
"Leaving Gallia and Liorga behind, it's going to suck." Sami answered flatly, hiding her pain beneath an unemotional facade, "But I want to go to the Academy, become an officer, make something of myself." Get away from Anya and that bitch from science... She thought, though she'd never voice the words, she just couldn't bring hatred into the open air.
Kara nodded, taking a sip of her tea. "I just want to make sure that your making this choice, with a positive mindset. There are plenty of opportunities on-board to learn. You can always take your academy training here, I am suitably qualified to act as your tutor I do believe. Would you like that?" Kara asked, frowning a little.
"I appreciate the offer, Lieutenant, I really do." Sami smiled weakly, "But I worry that I'm getting too comfortable here, that I might impede my own growth. I'll miss you all, a lot, but I really think going to Frisco is the best way for me."
Kara nodded, sipping the last of her tea. "Well, it's a real shame y'know. cause you ARE needed here. however I cannot, absolutely will not. Stand in your way. In fact I'll write a letter of recommendation for you, it will be placed into your permanent file for all time. If you meet commander K'illara then mention my name. You'll be honoured among his security and tactical class. That I promise you" Kara winked, and held out her hand for a handshake, standing as she did so.
Sami shook her soon to be former chief's hand, trying hard to put on a brave face, "Thank you." She smiled, "And if it makes you feel any better, it's not like I'll be completely alone there. I mean, I'm bound to have some classes with Cdr. Gronkill, so I'll be taken care of. I appreciate your concerns though."
~Matias...~ Kara drifted away in thought for a few moments, before snapping back to reality. "Let him know that all is well here. We all miss him." She said finally.
"I will." Sami nodded, "And, thanks. I mean, for everything."
Kara stood slowly. "You've not left yet though. I intend to put you through your paces. Now I know why you're leaving, I want to prepare you as best as I can. Afterall, if we wish to be known as one of the best Engineering team's in the Galaxy, we gotta work hard at it."
"That's fair." Sami nodded, she wanted whoever she wound up serving under to receive an officer they'd brag about to other commanders, "Anything you got, I can take."
