Previously:

If a Vulcan could shrug he would 've. But in instead Kett simply said. “Humans are not logical”

Rani rolled her eyes, none the wiser if the plane would take off slowly, land vertically or fly upside down, but she wasn't going to ask anymore questions.

Current:

It was clear that Kett wasn't going to open his wonderful, impressive, hugely intelligent mind far enough to understand that what he had said, without the information he knew about Flight and means to take off and land, all of which was a foreign language to Rani, was never going to make sense to her just by describing it with words that she couldn't envisage. She gave up trying to match his intellect, which wasn't going to happen, and decided to wait to see what might happen that could cast some light on what he was trying to describe.

Putting on the clothing that the Holosuite provided for them had been difficult enough but she finally had it the right way up - she hoped - and was ready to stand in front of Kett for "inspection" and from thence to the planes. Part of her dreaded what might happen to show herself up more, and part of her was so excited to be (at least in some way) on the fringes of something from his world that he enjoyed,

"Will I do?" she asked.

"indeed" said Kett with an approving and simple nod. As the holodeck shimmered around them. Their nostrils filled with the smell sea air and jet fuel and a brisk south Atlantic breeze pulled on their jump suits as the two Starfleet officers and jump jet appeared on a aircraft carrier.

They were flagged in and as they approached the sling to catch and slow them, Kett took the controls and Rani was very pleased he had because it was obvious that she would have had a struggle to achieve that kind of accuracy, especially on her first lesson.

After an impressive show of skill by Kett, Rani was more keen that ever to try to make this work and that if she could be good at this, they might become closer over a shared interest? She could but hope and it was worth a try. She just didn't know if she would be able to impress him as she was starting from so far back from where he was with the craft. He'd been doing it as a profession and she'd barely even seen any in the skies, let alone attempted to guide one in a straight line! It was a long shot but she needed to try and to really get results as this was very important in getting his attention and respect. Steeling herself so as not to fall out of the cockpit and onto the carrier in an awkward unaccustomed climb down, Rani managed not to end up head over heels and hoped she had struggled down without too much lack of grace.

They were shown below and taken through to a staff area where many other pilots, crew and colleagues were gathered around, drinks in hands, boisterous banter and witticisms flying around the cheery, chatty room. It was a little bit daunting to someone as new to their numbers as Rani was but she did at least have Kett at her side, to translate the acronyms and slang and lingo they were all accustomed to.

Or so she thought.

They hadn't been through the first door before there were shouts of welcome and raucous laughter, with jokes and pats on the shoulder and a little bit of spilling of drinks all over them as the crowd recognised Kett and were very clearly happy to see him.

Amongst the very welcoming, smiling, laughing and garrulous crowd however, there was several lovely lady pilots in the group, almost all of which were very attractive and their sunny reception made them all seem brilliant to be amongst. This did have a double edged effect on Rani. In such an intense situation, she did feel a bit like a fish out of water which made the loveliness of the others a bit threatening but their kind and happy atmosphere and welcome made her very glad she was with someone like Kett of whom they all clearly thought a lot.

Rani tried to take Kett's arm as the throng moved around and they became separated by the tables and the chairs and the barstools and the people. It was clear she was just going to have to chill and wait for him to greet people and return. She didn't mind this as so many were being so good to her, she had a drink within minutes of arriving and a group of sunny faces smiling and chatting to her as if she were an old friend and right at home. It was lovely and Rani was feeling so glad she had put herself into this group by coming out flying with Kett.

The holo-characters were so much fun to be with they had a wonderful time and finally their session was at an end, too quickly for Rani. They emerged full of chatter and high spirits and returned to their own quarters with enthusiastic promises to return and do that again very soon.
