A console exploded, sending sparks flying as the lighting in the deck flickered. The corridor dimmed as Cam walked through the debris. Burnt stench of melted metal and exposed wiring filled the corridor. The scattered, ruined metal and fallen panels littered the ground. With a tricorder on hand, she scanned for damage and assessed the most important ones. Exposed wiring hung from the ceiling and from the walls as she ducked under the coiled tubes. The deck she was currently walking on was one of the most damaged ones during the attack. The steady hum from her tricorder led her to a pile of rubbish, a mash of destroyed conduits and torn metal pieces.
Kneeling, she guided the locator through the mess, studying the readings on her small LCARS screen. Moving several pieces of the broken wall, she pulled out a PADD. Closing her tricorder and pocketing it, she wiped the dirt and grime from the screen and studied the flickering PADD. Tapping a few icons, she activated the screen. An incomplete repair manifest scrolled, signed by Petty Officer Criags, an engineer. Just below her was an open junction access tube, adjacent to the Jefferies. Pocketing the PADD, she crawled into the open accessway and pulled an engineering toolkit towards her.
Taking a hair tie from around her wrist, she pulled her hair back and moved the strands of her hair behind her head. Tying her hair into a knot, she arranged the tools in the open kit. Closing the kit, she crawled into the small, tight tube. Smoke billowed as the exposed pipe hissed at her. It nearly hit her head as she ducked under the boiling steam. Instinctively, she keyed in the nearby keypad, tapping on the LCARS screen to divert the deuterium flow. The hissing steam ceased. The surface felt warm to her touch as she crawled towards the other end of the limited access.
Pressing the button, the second door opened as Cam paused to remove her tricorder. Scanning the other end of the tube, she identified the problem spot according to the petty officer’s repair manifest. Pushing the engineer's toolkit forward, she knelt before the frayed conduit. Scanning the exposed wiring, she opened the kit and picked up a cylindrical device. It sparked as she placed it near the wiring. Picking up another tool, a small elongated stabilizer, it emitted a beam that stabilized and promoted the repair process. The sparking ceased as she put away the tools.
Rubbing her sweaty, greasy hands, she tapped in the small panel, erecting a localized containment field around the small conduit. Moving the stabilizer tool along the conduits, she melded the micro fissures along the wires. Tapping the keypad, power slowly returned through the bio-neural circuitry. Tapping her combadge, she spoke, "Input the repair log as complete by Lieutenant Junior Grade Camryn Shepard. Incorporate it into the report for the chief engineer."
Closing the conduit, she rerouted her path out of the access towards the ladder. She shifted her weight and climbed up through the bowels of the Elysium to another deck. The access hatch above her opened as she climbed out. Carrying the engineer kit, she flicked her tricorder open and scanned for additional breaches along the upper deck. Several engineers rushed past her as she stepped out of the junction access.
Lights flickered ominously as sparks flew from the exposed ceiling. Several officers ran past her as she walked with a steady, deliberate pace through the fallen debris. Her locator beeped steadily with a hum, guiding her through the crowded corridor towards another EPS conduit. Locating the stagnant power line through the malfunctioning conduit, she closed her tricorder. Putting down the kit, she placed her hand along the relay. Feeling along the line of the access hatch, she pulled it with a grunt and placed it on the ground while leaning it against the wall.
Kneeling on the ground, Cam opened the kit and browsed the selection of tools available to her. Taking the micro-spanner, she stood up and pulled out her tricorder. Flicking it open, she scanned the circuitry to localize the fault. Moving the micro-spanner along the wiring, she swept the tool along the lower section of the relay as the light flickered on while clearing the scorched residue. Putting the tool back into the kit, she keyed in a sequence on the small control pad, rerouting the power from the secondary system while creating a new bypass. The EPS power conduit slowly regained energy, powering up.
Closing the tricorder, she picked up the cover and placed it back into the relay, recovering the EPS conduit. Rubbing her hands together, she closed the kit and grabbed the nearby engineering NCO, asking him to return the toolkit properly. Walking back towards the turbolift, she entered and turned while pulling out her PADD.
"Deck 24, my quarters," Cam exhaled wearily as the lift moved. She looked over her PADD, scrolling through her updated repair manifest. The lift hummed steadily as she browsed the list. A few were automatically marked as done by other engineers in her department. However, the damage done from the first battle still needed attention. They could move, but how long could they breathe before the next wave?
As the lift stopped, Cam walked along the dimmed corridor. The damage done to her deck appeared superficial. However, additional engineers worked on several conduits, repairing and assessing the structural damage. Finding her quarters, she entered and walked straight to the bathroom. Stopping before the sink, she wrung her hands, massaging her sore joints. Turning on the water, she washed her hands free of grease and grime. Splashing some water on her face, she groaned, moving her neck to crack her neck bones and rolling her shoulders to release the tension. Her soreness pulled her down. However, her redundant Klingon physiology sustained her physically.
Her PADD beeped. Tapping the small screen, she read the new, updated message.
Lieutenant Shepard, you are requested for a quick strategy session. Be there in thirty minutes, sharp.
Cam exhaled, groaning softly as she tapped the PADD, confirming her attendance. Placing her hand against the back of her neck, she massaged her trapezius, pulling her head while feeling a small pop in her muscles. Opening the compartment, she pulled out a headache medicine and popped in a few to reduce her small headache and muscle cramps. Turning on the water, she filled the empty glass and drank the cold liquid.
Turning off the water, she grabbed the PADD and headed out to her next destination.
