MISSION 0 - History Speaks

1134 words - 2.3 OF Standard Post Measure
Nicholas was sitting in the little park that was on Deck 10, waiting for Orin to arrive. They were supposed to have met at 1230 hours, but it was pushing closer to 1300 hours while Nicholas was sitting on that bench. Still alone. Something was telling him that there was something going on with Orin, as he was usually never late to meetings. Especially with the type of person that Orin was and the work that he was engaged in. Being late was never apart of the game....or you were so late, but came with something major to part with to the other side.
Nicholas was about to head out when he saw Orin walking his way. Once the distance was closed between them, the two mean embraced for a moment before Nicholas asked, "What happened? We were supposed to meet for lunch almost half an hour ago by now. Was there some big meeting or something? Does it have to do with that Romulan ship that we've had with us for a little bit? Please, do tell."
Orin looked at Nicholas and said, "No, it wasn't the Romulans and you know that I couldn't tell you everything with that. Even if it was about them. But, take a look at the rank pips for a second and you'd see why I was late."
Nicholas looked at the ranks and realized that there was now a new one in the place of the Consul ranking. He gasped for a second and said, "They didn't?" Orin nodded before Nicholas said, "Congrats on the promotion! I've been hearing a buzz all around the ship about multiple promotions. I was wondering if you might have gotten one as well."
"Yeah, I think quite a few of us got promotions. Heck, I think several of the guys on the Diplomatic Protection Team got it as well. I'm excited to see what the future holds for all of us," Orin said with a cheeky smile on his face. He pointed towards one of the various shops and places to eat before asking, "You still hungry or did you eat without me? Cause, I know that you have an iron stomach that can eat a ton!"
Nicholas slapped Orin on the arm before saying, "I haven't gotten anything to eat yet. So, I'm still starving. But, I thought the same thing about you! You have the stomach of a million people. Especially since you've got that gut slug in your stomach."
As the two men starting walking and Orin listened to Nicholas, he waved Nicholas off before saying, "Just cause I have a symbiant doesn't mean that I have the fortitude of a million mean in the area of eating. Just means that I know what I like and can eat quite a bit. Now, you shush it or tell us what we're eating or where we're going. capeesh?"
"Since when did you start picking up Human slang all of the sudden? It doesn't have to do with you learning the phrases and sayings of the various worlds around the universe, does it? Nicholas asked as he pointed out one of the Starlight Lounge near the school.
Orin shrugged and said, "I don't know. I've just heard a few of the Human crew members say it a million times before. Just thought it meant something like 'don't mess with me' or 'do you understand' or something? Lord only knows!"
Nicholas chuckled a little bit as the pair of them sat down and started to look over the menu. "Well, LEGATE, you never cease to amaze me. For someone as old as you are, I'm surprised that you haven't heard of some of the basic stuff from places like Earth, Vulcan, or Andor before. Especially being a diplomat like yourself."
Orin shrugged again and said, "I don't know. For me, I hear so much in daily conversations and it goes right through one ear and out of the other. Heck, sometimes the universal translator picks something up and doesn't have a proper Trill or El-Aurian word for it. Then, other times, it gives me something a bit funny in my native tongues. So, forgive me if I don't always understand everything that comes out of the mouths of people."
"Yeah, that makes sense. I forgot that sometimes, things don't always translate quite right. But, it does interest me knowing what and how the universal translator might translate something like capeesh or other words like that. How does it translate?" Nicholas asked as he continued to look over the menu for a little bit, trying to figure out what he was hungry for.
Orin chuckled himself as he thought about it and said, "Literally, when it comes out through the Universal Translator, it comes out in one of a few ways. One of the big ones is....do you understand? Or something like that. But, it could also come out as are we clear or is that understood? Just some wierd ways, depending on the person and the way that they said it. I guess that's why I've been working on those idioms and sayings from around the universe."
"How has that been going by the way? Have you found any insight into the worlds that you've been looking into?" Nicholas asked as the waiter came by and took their orders, both for drinks and meals. They handed the waiter the menus while Orin thought about the question.
"Well, it has been interesting to see what the various worlds have said in their past and how they've been used over the years. Like, for Bajorans, I think they've talked a lot about their fighting spirit or something? Betazoids have talked about getting to the heart or truth of the matter. Plus, so many more things. I'll have to show you the database that I've been using to collect it all. If you'd like?" Orin asked as the food and drink was eventually brought out over the few minutes that they were talking.
As they began to eat, Nicholas nodded and said, "Yeah, I'd love that."
The two men began to eat and it was a good meal. Eventually, they had to get back to duty or other duties onboard the Elysium. They said their goodbyes and eventually headed onwards. Before completely parting ways, Nicholas said to Orin, "Congrats again on that promotion. We'll have to do something eventually to celebrate it. My treat. Might have to use some of my holodeck time to splurg on you."
"You don't have to do that, but I appreciate the sentiment. Go back to work and have a good rest of your shift!" Orin said before completely parting and heading back to duties himself.
