The doors hissed open and Gary stepped inside. it was dark, night yet stars filled the sky. He looked up and a tiny smile crossed his face. It was here, just outside his parents home in Cheyenne Wyoming that he had fallen in love with the stars and the promise they held. He laid down in the cool grass, his hands going behind his head and he continued to look upward at the same stars, stars that once held a bright future but now seemed to laugh and mock him. Lia was gone. Transferred off due to medical reasons. There was no telling when or more importantly if she was coming back. Gary had long ago given up on miracles.
Lying there, he reflected bitterly that the reason he was such a good card player was because he was so damn unlucky in love. He had two loves in his life. Catlin and Lia and now both were taken from him. How could the universe be so cruel? He didn't know and no longer cared. No one would ever get close again. The walls that had been built but crumbled under Lia's love would go up stronger than before. He was done getting hurt. Oh, he would be polite even friendly but keep people at arms length. He sighed and thought of Lia. She was strong, beautiful, smart and fiercely independent. They had fought like cats and dogs when they first met. He blinked back tears as he thought on how she had helped him to live again, to love again, to trust again and now with the arrival of a few papers she was gone. Lia had made him complete again. Not a shadow pretending to be a man. He thought of resigning, the thought was tempting but he pushed it aside. The Elysium and it's crew were his home and family. Besides he really had no other place to go.
As he lay in the grass he got angry. Angry at letting himself feel sorry for himself. That wasn't the way he had been raised to be a complainer a whiner. He held his hurt, his pain inside until Lia had shown him a better way, to talk, to express himself. When he had been a prisoner of the Romulans he didn't let himself feel sorry. He had been convinced release would (and finally did) happen and he had been reunited with Catlin and life had been good. Good until she was killed in a senseless accident and he had been too far away to even attend the services. He knew Lia would be disappointed in him if she knew he was moping around. He owed it to Lia, to live, to go on with his life as she would have wanted him to, no matter how much it hurt.
A smile graced his face as he looked at the stars, they once again shimmered and shined and held promise, hope.
"Computer play Somewhere Out There." An instant later the first notes of the song could be heard filling the holodeck.
Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight
Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there
And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky
Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true
And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky
Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there.
