Doctor...Counselor...Mother?

413 words; about a 2 minute read

It had been some time since Feyth had stunned Tate at their previous birthing class. As much as she knew she needed to think more about it and soon, the truth was, Sullivan didn't know what she was going to do. For now, the mother to be seemed satisfied that she was willing to give the idea some serious thought but she knew there would come a time when she would have to make a serious commitment. Of course, Sullivan knew she would raise the baby herself if it meant sparing the child a life within a foster home, but even so, she knew that sentiment was born out of emotion, not practicality. There were so many logistics she would have to figure out, including what she would do with her career. The truth was, she wanted to be a mother more than anything, but she always figured when it happened, she would be married or at least have a partner to share parenting responsibilities with. Could she be a good enough mother to this baby girl if she were to be a single parent? Of course, Sullivan wasn't asking the question in a general sense. She knew many single parents who were doing just fine and whose children were quite well adjusted. No, she was just wondering if she were capable of being a single parent.

Then there was the fact the child's father would more than likely still be living if anything happened to Feyth. Would River ever allow Tate to raise his daughter, part time or otherwise?

She had meant what she told Feyth. She had yet to meet this baby girl, but she loved her already. She was certain if any of the brass with Starfleet Counseling heard such an admission, they would question whether she had crossed the line as a counselor by becoming so emotionally invested in the course of her professional duties. What started as a genuine desire to offer support to a scared young woman in need had turned into something more. Would she have gotten this invested if there was not a baby involved? Tate couldn't be sure, but now that there was, she knew she had to sort things out.

Sullivan had also meant it when she said she owed it to this baby to do whatever she could to make sure she had a father in her life. Now the question was, wood River want the same thing?

Only time will tell.
