Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter
EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?
KH: Well my role onboard our fine home, is Chief Engineer. Although I could go on for several days about the exhaustive list of duties, Systems and personnel i'm responsible for, I'll keep it brief. Basically I'm in charge of all engineering personnel stationed all over the ship and of course responsible for the well being of the Elysium. I conduct daily maintenance checks on pretty much every system here, on a rotating weekly rota. This ensures proper staff coverage and maintenance for all areas of the ship. I also am technically part of the chain of command, so if anything happens to incapacitate or remove pretty much the entirety of the command team I can take-over as acting captain and am fully trained to do so, in such an emergency. Let's hope that never bloody happens though!
EPR: What made you choose that line of work?
KH: It was my God-Father Captain Jake Trease, who saw my potential. He was visiting my parents and found a few of my old school projects. Said to my parents I'd make a damn good engineer someday if I worked for it. Turns out his hunch was spot on afterall. I'm glad i'm here, there's nowhere I'd rather be.
EPR:How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?
KH: Every career has it's own trials and difficulties. I'm sure your position has its own ups and downs, especially dealing with people. My fiance and daughter help to keep me sane onboard. Plus an occasional foray into a holoprogram every now and again helps if I get too upset or emotional. Not to mention we have fantastic senior command staff, who never fail to listen and take good care of all of us.
EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?
KH: I think the best advice is can give is to be creative. Engineering requires brute force sometimes and at other times you just gotta try something different. Don't be afraid to fail. A mistake afterall, is another learning opportunity.
EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?
KH: I'd have to say it was my third year of Starship technical Engineering. Professor Greyhar sadly now retired, was always fun to be in class with. His wacky and sometimes downright dangerous teaching methods won't be forgotten by any of us in that class. I'll hopefully be going to visit him, when I can find time that is.
EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?
KH: Well, I suppose it's not exactly funny more ironic really, as I actually have become friends with him. While I was relatively new to this position another staff member confronted me about my lack of experience etc in front of the Captain. As it turned out, he was the one who ended up in trouble and a demotion with a sudden turnaround promotion for me in exchange. I'll never forget that day, not so much funny. More sentimental. I knew then our Captain, is a keeper. Also Commander Taylor. Everything he does, is full of fun, he never ceases to brighten my day for sure.
