To the Counselor

Mission: MISSION 0 - History Speaks
Location: Counselor's Office

Matias was pacing back and forth in front of the counselor's office. He was nervous, and...afraid. He knew what he had to say, but would she listen? This could ruin everything for him. But he finally got the nerve and chimed the door.

"Come in," Tate called out. She wasn't expecting anyone, but her yeoman had told her Matias was waiting. The doors hissed open and Tate came forward. "Hello." She hadn't had a lot of interaction with him and had only ever observed him on the bridge, but he seemed a bit on edge. "How may I help?"

Matias came in and sat down. "I'm having problems with relationships here on the ship. Nothing seems to work." he said.

Sullivan sat across from him and used the time to consider his words. "I'm sorry to hear that. Will you elaborate more on what you mean?"

"Romantic relationships," said Matias. "I have one who is always trying to back out, and I strike out, using a human term, with others."

"I'm not sure I follow what you're saying," Tate replied. "When you say you have someone who is always trying to back out, are you saying this person is frequently trying to end a romantic relationship with you?"

"That is right," said Matias. "But then she keeps coming back."

"I'm going to need a little more information to make sense of this," Tate began. "Are the two of you arguing when these break ups happen? I'm also wondering if these decisions are mutual or one sided?" There were many different interpretations she could make based on what he was offering. She wasn't sure if she was talking to a broken hearted man or someone who had a more volatile relationship with his partners generally.

"I am more forward than I dare to here," he said. "My romantic relationships have always been vigorous. Not like a Klingon, but it's all out for me, all or nothing."

"I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying your feelings are intense and you want to get serious with your partners fairly quickly, or are you just referring to the sexual connection you have with your partners?"

"I would say both. I'm like the Terran wolf," said Matias.

"So does that mean you're aggressive and territorial?" He wasn't saying a whole lot, so Tate could do nothing but infer things from his statements. "Perhaps it would help me to understand things better if you tell me more about what she says when she breaks up with you and then comes back."

"Maybe not territorial, like Terran wolves are, but she is very confused," said Matias. "She doesn't like me putting her up on a pedestal, but then...I don't know, she wants me to."

"Tell me more about that. In what ways do you put her on a pedestal? What does that mean to you and to her?"

His eyes shone for a moment as he looked like he was in rapture. "She is amazing, so high in virtue and beauty that poetry barely describes her. When I am with her, I feel complete. I guess it frightens her for some reason." He sighed. "But as for what I feel about her, this ancient song by a Terran group called The Beatles says it all. Computer, play 'Something' by the Beatles."

The melody started to play, and although it was unfamiliar to Sullivan, it was pleasing. She smiled. "I can understand how much you care for her and want to show how much, but have you considered the way you see her creates pressure for her to live up to your expectations?"
