Kayala had spent so much time as Nine of Twelve, Primary adjunct to Trimatrix 332. She didn't think she was capable of disobeying the collective. She just followed the commands, because... she had to survive. Who was she?
The cube comes across a Danube runabout with two on board. Scanners indicate they were in self destruct mode. The cube beams the two on board and manages to end the self destruction.
Salom was giving the standard Borg greeting about not resisting. The two fired back missing. They started to run.
They come right into Kayala. "Please mercy."
Kayala grabbed one of them. She looked at him and then plunged her tubules into him. Subduing him, A pang of guilt hit her. She tried to ignore it. 'Eight of Seventeen. Human subdued. Proceeding with assimilation.'
She picked up the human while drugged and walked him to an assimilation chamber. Thoughts zipped around in her head, was this right. She was borg.
Lt. Niles Pertwee says to her, "I can tell you are not fully assimilated and you are questioning this. I have proposition for you. What if you supply me with Borg intell, so we can prevent further assimilations."
"They are inside my mind, I must comply, or they will notice and completely assimilate me." Nine of Twelve noted.
"You may be the only hope for Billions of other people," Miles says with air in his throat.
Kayala spoke. "Do you have a way I could deceive the collective? Otherwise, I will have to comply. I'm not exactly myself. If I refuse, they will know. If I show any emotion, they will know. Even talking to you might attract their attention."
"If I give you a place to send messages to and we never talk, that might help," Miles says, "You deceive them by not talking. Borgs who talk are a dead give away. Second, you have continue doing your work until we can find a way to rescue you."
Kayala nodded. "You must do so, and you must escape. They will soon wonder why I am not assimilating you. Once your done, do not let me catch you."
He gave her a location to send the messages to when she could.
"Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated." She began to advance on him. Holding up her prosthesis.
He had to trip her as she fell back. He set up a chaos scenario that caused power blips all across the cube. By the time the blips were gone, he was gone in his runabout.
Kayala was given new commands and she saw to them.
Three months had gone by as Niles thought about his narrow escape. His link to the satellite received a message. He read the message as it indicated a Borg offensive in headed towards Magna Roma. An order was sent to several ships to do a routine patrol of the area. The next day, the Borg came to assimilate but they were intercepted. The aperture of the transwarp conduit was collapsed by photon torpedoes, causing one cube to be destroyed, three cubes damaged and two headed back to the Delta Quadrant. Just another mission conducted by them that the rest of the Federation would never know about.
Kayala finished with her assigned maintenance and then proceeded to an empty alcove, she stepped into it and began to regenerate. She stared at Salom in front of her. Feelings began to emerge. She did her best to suppress any emotion. She was beginning to lose hope just staring her husband in the eyes emotionlessly.
Next day there was a major meeting at Section 31. They realized they had an operative inside a Borg Cube. No one knew her name, just she was not fully assimilated. She was now a major asset. Plus they each knew they could not tell others where they are getting Intel from because it could jeopardize everything and most of all, they have to all stay on Earth for special insurance.
