Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter

EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?

RK: “I watch over and maintain the Elysium’s brig. Maintaining the forcefield generators, checking the cell walls for structural integrity, keeping the backup generator fully functional, cleaning and testing the local weapon storage, flushing the local computer memory at random intervals and loading from backup images to make trojan or hacking attempts as difficult as possible for potential enemies. The list of procedures is actually rather extensive, and I’m not allowed to go into detail for obvious reasons.

You might assume I’m standing guard over some enemy of the Federation, but most of the time these cells are either empty or occupied by misbehaving crew members. Anything can land someone in “detention” for a little while. Bar fights, unprofessional behavior, insubordination, destruction of property, etc. Most of these things don’t happen very often, but with the sheer size and population of the USS Elysium, what’s uncommon on the grand scale is still more than enough to fill my humble accommodations, twelve cells, once every other week.

My job, no matter who is in that cell, is to ensure they are not a threat to themselves or to others. Keeping them confined but safe, as well as treating them with courtesy and respect, isn’t just my professional obligation- it’s my personal duty to those I serve and protect.”

EPR: What made you choose that line of work?

RK: “I believe in order. So does Starfleet. I want to make the galaxy a safer place. This post, while not flashy or exciting, is essential to a properly running ship and security team. I know I can make a difference, whether I’m defending us from without or within. If I can save only one person, today, then I know I’ve become the difference that I wish to see in the Federation I fight for.”

EPR: How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?

RK: “If you’re talented enough, passionate enough, or stubborn enough… you can prepare yourself for quite a lot. I’ve spent my entire life preparing for the scrutiny of my peers and the responsibility of representing Starfleet. The pressure is just another part of me. It adds weight to my mind like my equipment adds weight to my uniform. You get used to it the more you carry it with you.”

EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?

RK: “Don’t get complacent. Practice over and over until you get it perfect. Be prepared all the time.”

EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?

RK: “I spent the vast majority of my time studying and training. I suppose graduation was the best part, for me.”

EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?

RK: “Does giving hypospray-nunchucks to a Vulcan count? Oops. Guess I should've built up to that.”
