Alicia sat on the sofa, her feet stretched out giving her swollen ankles a rest. A drink and snack were on the nearby coffee table where she could reach them if she needed to. With recent events with Sthilg she needed to contact her mother and talk about her decision to become the adopted daughter of the Gorn Doctor.
Requesting a secure channel to her mother’s ship she waited hoping that the ship wasn’t out of communication range.

Deanna Kelea was sitting in her office pouring over the latest Counselling reports, like her daughter she too was a Chief Counsellor. Many years of experience under her belt she was a Commander by rank but had refused the option to become First Officer preferring to keep her role as a Counsellor. An incoming communication from her daughter made her smile.

“Alicia!” Her smile practically shone. “How are you? How are my grandchild and son-in-law?”

“Hi mum!” Alicia smiled warmly. “We’re all fine, as you can see I’m blooming!” She held up the PADD She was using for comms for her mother to see her bump. “I feel like a baby space whale!”

Deanna grinned. “I understand completely! Now you know how I felt with you!” She grinned. “Why the monitor?” She motioned to the monitor Sthilg had put on Alicia’s neck.

Alicia had quite forgotten about the monitor. “Oh my blood pressure is up some that’s all, it’s for monitoring so Doctor Sthilg can keep an eye on it.”

Her mother nodded. “Well you take it easy, I don’t want any calls saying anything has happened to either of you!”

Alicia nodded. “Don’t worry mum I’m in good hands. Actually that’s kind of why I’m calling. I need to speak to you about Sthilg.”

“Ohh?” Her mother looked at Alicia curiously. “I get the impression that this is something significant?”

Alicia nodded. “Mum I ... Sthilg has adopted me. I gave him my permission for him to become part of my family, the ritual his people perform is an adoption ritual. I’m his daughter now.”

“I see” Deanna looked at Alicia curiously. “May I ask more about this Sthilg?”

Alicia nodded. “He’s a Gorn. The only member of his family now, he lost his wife and daughter years ago. He has my upmost respect and trust, he’s a dedicated physician and Chief Medical Officer of the Elysium.”

Deanna nodded. “I would like to meet your ... father” She offered a smile. “I trust your judgement Alicia, I know it hasn’t been easy for you since you lost Kal, your baby and your father. You lost so much, yet you have found a whole new family now. I’m proud of you!”

Alicia nodded and wiped away a few emotional tears. “I’m sorry mum I never meant to put you through all that stress. At the time life didn’t feel worthy of living.”

“Don’t you dare apologise young lady!” Deanna gave her daughter an annoyed look. “Life took a cruel turn for you back then, I don’t blame you for what happened!” Her voice lowered and returned to a softer tone. “I love you Alicia, no matter what I will always be here for you. Now tell this Doctor Sthilg, I will be in touch. I want to meet the man that has proved himself worthy of my daughters love and respect.”

Alicia nodded and smiled. “I will Mum I promise!”

Deanna nodded. “I’m afraid I have to go, I have an appointment soon. You take care of yourself and my grandchild, say hello to Savar for me.”

“I will’ Alicia nodded. “Love you Mum”

“I love you too pumpkin.” Her mother grinned. “We’ll speak again soon.”

As the screen went blank Alicia smiled to herself. She missed her mother, and she had no doubt she’d see her once the baby was born. A grandchild was something her mother had always wanted. Putting her PADD down she picked up her drink, for now she had time to rest and that was just what she was planning on doing.
