Having completed his Gamma Shift in Sickbay, T'Kek walked into his quarters, collapsing into a nearby chair. His roommate was out, likely in the Mess Hall eating. Let me get promoted so I can have my own quarters, he thought. Or get married...but then I still wouldn't have my own quarters. The shift in Sickbay had seemed longer than usual due to the lack on patients and his thoughts constantly drifting to his sister.

Her ship had been severely damaged when the Warp Core apparently experienced a feedback in it's system. However, T'Pral was tough and smart. They had been close growing up despite the fights that brothers and sisters normally had. His sister was an engineer aboard the USS Roanoke which caused him to worry more since a feedback in the warp core would be more devastating in Main Engineering where his sister would have most logically been located.

A beep from his terminal caught his attention causing him to stand and approach the terminal more quickly than a typical vulcan would have. He had never been good at suppressing his emotions as a feminine voice came over the comm. "Communications to Ensign T'Kek. There is a subspace transmission for you from a Captain Kanna Kim of the USS Elizabeth Blackwell."

"Put it through," he replied eagerly at the mention of his mother's name as he sat down in the chair in front of the terminal.

"Acknowledge."

The screen on his terminal switched to the image of an Asian woman with greying black hair worn up and wearing a Starfleet Captain's uniform. "Mother," he greeted with a grin.

His mother returned the smile. "It is good to see you, T'Kek," she said warmly.
"How are you?"

"I am well but worried about T'Pral. Do you have any news?" he asked, leaning forward in his seat.

His mother nodded, maintaining a smile. "Yes. Your sister, along with the remaining crew have been evacuated to my ship and are receiving medical aid. She sustained several second degree burns and smoke inhalation but is otherwise fine. She will make a full recovery. However, the Roanoke is beyond repair so we're going to scuttle the ship and then head to Starbase 315 to offload the crew of the Roanoke.

T'Kek let out a sigh of relief. "I am relieved to hear that. Do you know what caused the feedback?"

His mother let out a sigh. "Some of the remaining engineers, T'Pral included believe that a micro facture occurred in the reaction chamber while the Roanoke was at warp. They reported a loss in pressure in the chamber five seconds before the feedback. They're lucky the ship wasn't destroyed.

The information was a reminder to T'Kek that even with all of the Federation technology, going to Warp was still inherently dangerous. "When you see T'Pral, please tell her that my thoughts are with her."

Kanna nodded and smiled. "I will, T'Kek. I'll contact you again when I can."

"Thank you, mother," T'Kek replied, grinning.

"Captain Kim, out," his mother said before terminating the link.

T'Kek sat back in the chair, still grinning, overjoyed that his sister was alive and safe. With a look at the chronometer on his desk, he decided to head to the mess hall himself to grab a bite to eat.
