Brief Interview with Ms Elisha Pryce-Randal - onboard Ship Reporter
EPR: What is your role on the Elysium? And what does it entail?
HDLR: My role? I’m Head Nurse of the USS Elysium. I’m responsible for assisting the medical staff when needed, overseeing the nursing staff making sure they’re all settled and sorting out any problems they may face, and making sure that the ship has plenty of medical supplies ready for whatever we might face. I am qualified to deal with minor injuries that patients may come in with, I can also run the usual boarding medicals for new arrivals.
EPR: What made you choose that line of work?
HDLR: It’s more or less in my blood. My mother is a Doctor and my father is a marine, I followed in both their footsteps. I used to be part of the Marine contingent onboard ship, I’m a fully qualified Combat Medic. Given my pregnancy I decided to become a full time nurse. I’ve also been given the opportunity to study to become an Officer to that end I’m currently studying with the onboard Academy.
EPR:How do you handle the pressure that comes with being a Starfleet officer?
HDLR: Lots of cuddles with my husband Fernando, and plenty of chocolate! *grins* honestly though it comes with the territory, once you’ve been in the marine corps you can pretty much handle anything that’s thrown your way. I tend to focus on my patients, they need my care and at the end of the day I pride myself on having helped those who’ve needed it.
EPR: What would you say to a cadet aspiring to do what you do?
HDLR: I would say to follow your dreams! It’s a lot of hard work but it’s all worth it in the end. To be a nurse you need to have confidence in yourself, people’s lives are in your hands so you can’t afford to make mistakes. At the same time you can aspire to be anything you want to be you just have to be willing to put that effort into it. If there’s one thing I’ve come to love it’s that you gain a family when you join the crew of a ship, not just loved ones but a family as a whole.
EPR: What is your favorite memory of your time at the academy?
HDLR: My favourite memory is being the only student in my group left standing at the medical autopsy whilst training to be a nurse. The pathology team used to run a bet on how many students would still be standing at the end. They had a habit of being somewhat melodramatic but no matter what they did it didn’t bother me. You could say I ruined their track record!
EPR: Do you have any funny tales to tell about your time on the USS Elysium?
HDLR: Funny tales... None that I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.
