Mission: MISSION 0 - History Speaks
Location: Montgomery Scott
Timeline: 2389
5185 words - 10.4 OF Standard Post Measure

Later at the Crew Mess, Phoenix entered and looked around, she was right on time.

Mattias, as usual, was a few minutes early. He was sitting at the rear table, with his back to the bulkhead. Seeing Phoenix enter, he stood and smiled warmly.

Spotting him, she moved through the tables and slipped up to stand beside his table. "Good evening" Phoenix said politely.

Mattias bowed again, "Your Highness." His eyes glistened with happiness that Phoenix had agreed to have dinner with him. He moved over and pulled out her chair.

"Shhh" she said taking the seat. "I do not advertise it Mattias. Its not who I am anymore."

After Phoenix was seated, Mattias sat down across from her. "I'm sorry. I'll always think of you as royalty, because of how you held yourself when your father did what he did. I thought you were very brave and extremely strong." There was honesty and admiration in his voice as he spoke.

"Yeah, until I screamed. Pallas... my twin, he had it videoed. On Holo cam. He showed it to me when I got back. Said he was going to have it played on HIS birthday, at HIS party." She shrugged. "I kicked him in the groin for that."

Smiling an evil grin, Mattias thought to himself, Atta girl!, but said, "One hopes that he got the message." Shaking his head sadly, he continued. "Watching you get whipped like that...has got to be the hardest thing I ever saw. Have they...."he blushed alittle, asking such a personal question, "have the scars healed and been removed?" He still saw the angry gashes that laced her beautiful flesh whenever he thought about her, which was often.

"No. I do not want them removed.," She stated.

Mattias thought about his next questiom carefully. "So you will have a constant reminder of what they tried to do to you?"

"Yes" She said softly. "They did it and I will remember"

"To make you submit to their will, why else?" Mattias's question, while powerful, held zero negative tone towards Phoenix.

"No they did it to prove the weakness of women, to prove male superiority and that their way is the only way. Its not."

Mattias shook his head in disgust. "I'm sorry, Phoenix. Most of all, I'm sorry that I didn't react sooner." He still felt shame by not disobeying orders. He wanted to save her the moment their eyes met in that plaza. But, he was a young lieutenant at the time and his superior officer had given him a direct order. The treaty with the planet was apparently too important to risk an incident.

"I understand why people didn't both my people and yours. I was not well educated but I am not stupid. I have come a long way in 4 years." she added with a smile.

Hearing the strength in her voice, Mattias grinned. "Yes, I can definitely see that, Phoenix. You seem stronger, more sure of yourself," he blushed a little as he added, "prettier too."

"Older you mean. At 16 I was still a child. In most ways." She laughed softly.

Mattias chuckled. "Well, yes. Older too. But, I meant what I said. You are quiet prettier. And it's not just from your looks. The way you carry yourself, how far you have improved yourself, plus, yes, a few more years. They all have added to your attractiveness." He knew he was making a fool of himself. But, there was something about this woman that just made him want to be completely honest with her.

She blushed. "Thank you. So where have you been for the past 4 years?"

Tipping his head in acknowledgement, Mattias then chuckled softly. "Actually? I've been here since I was pulled from your side. The chief diplomat at our embassy on your homeworld wanted to rake me across the coals for doing what I did, pulling you off that post. Course, he didn't realize that I had stronger friends. So, I was sent here. And now, I'm the commander of a full unit."

"I met him." Came the flat reply. "He gave me the Prime Directive speech. My world is not prewarp so I told him it didn't apply." She sniffed. "I met him again at my graduation. He tried to be all buddy buddy. He got ignored."

Mattias chuckled. "Yup, that sounds like him. He was always going on about first contact this and prime directive that. In the end, we usually just ignored him anyways." He paused a beat then continued. "So, Phee, what is it that you do now, now that you're out here in the fleet?"

"I am a flight controller." She said with a smile, pride in the accomplishment was there. "Women on my world are not even allowed to go to school, so.. it's a great thing for me."

Nodding appreciatively, Mattias responded. "Very impressive. Having to keep an eye on every shuttle and ship in the area at all times. Very demanding job. Im sure you'll kick ass." He gave her a soft grin. He then added, "I'm really glad you're here and safe. I never stopped thinking about you, all these years."

She smiled and inclined her head. "I wanted to thank you properly, I was pretty out of it on painkillers for a while there."

Tilting his head again, Mattias reied, his eyes never leaving Phoenix's. "It was my honor, Phee.

At that point, one of the lounge waiters came over to their table. "My apologies on the delay, folks." The portly Bolian stated. "Do you know what you would like to have today?"

Phoenix looked up. "Just a ceasar salad thank you" she said.

"Very good, Ma'am." The Bolian replied with a friendly grin. He then looked over to Mattias. "And you, Captain Ruchardson? Would you care for your usual?"

Mattias nodded. "Yeah, Rixx, thanks. And Rixx, allow me to introduce Ensign Phoenix Lalor, the Monty's newest and brightest Flight Control Officer." He was grinning a little proudly as he talked about her.

The Bolian smiled brighter. Extending his right hand to Phoenix, he said, "Oh! Welcome aboard Ensign Lalor. Anytime you want something to eat, you just come see old Rixx." He leaned closer and whispered conspiratorially, "Whatever you want, I'll charge it to his bill."

She laughed "I will keep that in mind" And she sat back and looked at Mattias. "So what is your usual?"

Shrugging slightly, Mattias replied. "Depends on the day. As today is Thursday, it's a steak sandwich with sliced mozzarella cheese, on a toasted hero, with salt, pepper and mayo. It comes with a side of sweet potato fries and a root beer float."

She let her eyes widen. "Well I guess Marines burn through a lot more calories than fleeters."

Mattias chuckled. "You have no Idea, Phee." He paused bofore continuing. "So, What all would you like to do during your time on Monty?"

"I want to do my job, keep my head down." Phoenix said softly. "I don't need issues or anyone saying that I am slacking."

Sitting forward towards her, Mattias said in a serious tone. "If, at any point, anyone is giving you a hard time, unnecessarily, or if you are being treated inappropriately, in any way. You tell me, immediately. Okay? I know there are a few shitbag uniform fillers on this boat. I will not stand by if they try to make your life difficult just to make their dicks hard."

"Thank you. I will keep that in mind as well." She smiled at him.

Nodding, Mattias gave her a friendly grin. "If you'd like, I mean, if you didn't already have plans, perhaps after dinner, I could give you a tour?"

Phoenix nodded. "That would nice, I hate being lost."

This made Mattias smile warmly. Then, before he could reply, their food arrived.

Rixx first placed Phoenix's order in front of her, then Mattias'. "Enjoy! If you need anything, please let me know."

"Thanks, Rixx." Mattias responded with a friendly grin.

"Thank you" Phoenix said with a smile as well. "Looks good."

Rixx seemed to turn a brighter shade of blue. He bowed slightly and then moved off.

"He's really a great guy." Mattias said before laying his napkin in his lap.

They ate in comfortable companionship and then after they had finished Phoenix followed Mattias out of the crew lounge.

"Well, how familiar are you with the Ambassador Class starship?" Mattias asked as they started the tour.

"I am a little familiar. I have been trying to study up on it. I know how to fly it." Phoenix said brightly.

Mattias paused as they walked. "You can fly this beast? Well, damn! I guess I know who to come see if I wanna take her out one night after bedtime!"

"I.. have not flown it yet but I know how to fly one. Flight Simulations," She admitted.

"I see." Mattias shook his head, feigning disappointment. "And here I though you'd be my driver." He held the frown for a few beats, then, peeking out of one eye, he finally smiled a broad, friendly grin. "Just kidding, Phee!"

She gave him a friendly shove. "Laugh it up Mattias. We all know Marines are lazy and they cannot drive or fly themselves to places" she teased back.

They entered an empty turbolift car as Phoenix shoved Mattias. Once the doors closed, he reached out and pulled her to him. The look in his eyes was powerfully arousing. "You should be careful who you call lazy, your highness." After a few beats of gazing into her mesmerizingly silver eyes, he leaned in and gave her a gentle kiss.

She stared for a moment and then shyly stepped back. Her cheeks were going red as she did so.

Mattias instantly kicked himself mentally when he saw Phoenix's reaction. "I..I'm sorry...for being so forward, Phoenix. I...when I pulled you close, I don't know what came over me." He was blushing now. You fucking idiot! he screamed at himself. In what fucking reality would a woman as intelligent and beautiful as Phoenix Lalor, EVER be intersted in the likes of you?!

He stepped back to his side of the turbolift car, wanting yo look into her eyes again. Finally, he straightened up and looked straight at her. "Phoenix. I won't lie to you. I have been attracted to you since our eyes met back in that courtyard. I have thought about you constantly since I was ordered from your side. I also have wanted to kiss you since I saw you in the shuttlebay. I almost did earlier, in the other turbolift, but, I wanted to get to know how you've been. I've missed you." He took a deep breath and continued.

"I know that what I just did, could be considered against regulations. I forced myself upon you, and I am ashamed that I have made you uncomfortable. Should you choose to press charges, I will not dispute them. I'm...I'm sorry, Phoenix."

She took a breath. "I am not going to press charges." she said softly. "You just shocked me. I am sorry, I am not used to such things." She took a breath. "Shall we continue the tour?"

Nodding slowly, Mattias slowly let out the breath that he hadn't realized he had been holding. "Of course," he replied quietly, while the voice inside his head continued to scream that it was right.

"Deck Twenty-Nine, Aft." The car quickly set out towards the requested destination. "Figure we'd start in the area that you might be working in first. He stopped staring into Phoenix's beautiful eyes and turned to face the door. "And, thank you. For choosing not to press charges. I give you my word that I will never treat you like that again." His voice had lost some of the heat, but, the affection was still there, clear as a bell.

She inclined her head. "I believe you. I still trust you Mattias" Phoenix looked at him. "Whats on deck 29?"

A small grin creased his face as he cleared his throat and replied. “Ahem! It’s..uh..where main flight control for the shuttle bay is located. Both the shuttles for the ship and transports for my Marines fly in and out of the same shuttlebay.”

"Ah so back to the scene of this morning?" She asked lightly.

Tipping his head to the left slightly, Mattias replied. “Yes and no. We’ll be entering the command gondola located at the fore of the shuttlebay.”

"Ah the Marine Command gondola or is it general?" She asked curiously

Turning to look at her, Mattias had a slightly impish grin on his face. “Now, what makes you think that you are allowed into my sanctum, young lady? Hmmm?” It was clear that he was only kidding with her, though, she had yet to realize why she would, in fact, earn certain special privileges. Special privileges that most of the Fleeter crew would never obtain.

"Hmm not sure. But I would like to see the Marine Shuttles..."

This made Mattias chuckle. Then, smiling fully, he nodded. “Very well, my dear. Computer, reset destination to deck thirty-three, Marine County, transport storage.” The turbo lift paused briefly, then resumed its normal speed, but heading to the new requested destination.

"At the Academy they say that Marine shuttles were configured differently and have greater maneuverability."

As the turbo lift car reached its destination, the doors slid open, and Mattias stood aside. “Ladies first.”

Phoenix nodded and stepped from the Turbolift.

As he followed her out of the car, Mattias responded to her statement. “Yes, they are. And they need to be. A normal shuttle would get shot out of the sky, delivering my Marines to a combat zone. It’s unavoidable. There are just too many failsafes built in to them.” They finally reached a sealed door that had an armed Marine standing at the ready. After saluting Mattias, she moved aside and allowed them to enter. Mattias reached over and punched in a secure code as he spoke. “Marine transports and starfighters are built for one thing and one thing only,” the doors slid open, revealing a long bay, filled with eight craft, four were Hawks, the Marine variant of the Fleet Raptor space superiority starfighter. The other four craft were the Clydesdales, the Marine varian of the Powell, which was the long range warp shuttle currently in use in the fleet.

“To bring the fighting to our enemies.” The door slid shut behind them as he finished speaking, leaving them alone in the storage bay. As Mattias continued further into the compartment, he lovingly ran his right hand along the underside of the closest Hawk, tail number 5-5-8. “ these beauties are designed to go faster, turn sharper, and deliver a heavier hit than anything Intel says is out there gunning for us. And those,” he pointed to the Clydesdale that they were approaching. “Are practically flying tanks. They have three times the ablative and reactionary armor that the Powell’s have, with only the barest of creature comforts for the flight crew. Wanna see?”

Phoenix nodded. "Sure. they are nicer than the Erisian fighters."

Mattias gave her a pleased grin. He then moved to the port hatch controls and, after imputing his command codes, the door slid open and the internal power activated and went into standby mode.

Again, Mattias indicated that Phoenix should enter first.

Phoenix slid into the craft and looked around. "Way nicer." she said with a smile. She moved to the pilots seat as if drawn to it.

Mattias grinned happily as he watched Phoenix move around in his world, as if she had always been there. "Yeah, she sure is. I've put hundreds of hours of my life in war hourses like this ol girl." He lowered himself down into his commander's seat and swiveled to watch Phoenix.

She didn't notice as she ran her hands over the console. "I always wanted to fly. Riding horses were just not fast enough. When I joined the fleet, they tried to push me into counseling or science. I am not that way minded. I wanted to fly something. Watching my brother be able to fly a hover vehicle or a shuttle was painful. Hamfisted as my instructors would say. Couldn't fly his way out of a brown paper bag."

After yhinking about what she had just said, Mattias reached over and activated the comm panel. "Captain Harrison, Captain Richardson here, Sir. Request permission to take one of my Clydes out for a quick training flight?"

The reply came a moment later. "Go ahead, Mattias, were gonna be investigating this nebula for the next two days. Feel free to catch up to us, Harrison out."

She spun and stared at him. "Mattias?"

Leaning back in his seat, Mattias grinned warmly. "Well, Ensign Lalor?" He tried to sound official behind his grin. "You heard him! Contact Flight Control and state that we are going on a short training flight."

"okay" She smiled and sat down in the seat. "Clyde Heavy One to Flight Control. Preparing for launch. Requesting a clear deck."

"Acknowledged Clyde Heavy One. Deck Clear, you can proceed."

Phoenix grinned and her fingers danced over the console. She had been trained by the best. She brought the craft up off the deck and smoothly took it out of the bay.

Sitting back, Mattias said nothing. He was enjoying the view too much. Seeing Phoenix smile as brightly as she was made her seem even more beautiful to him. "Ms Lalor, you may...indulge yourself."

Phoenix did so. She let her fingers move and the craft responded to her commands. It shot away from the Scott and a quick flick had it barrel rolling without hesitation.

Mattias chuckled. "Oh come on, Phee! This tub can do warp three without breaking a sweat. Show me what you can really do!"

"Warp 3... Hmm" She studied the console and plotted a course. The craft zipped into warp, and then dropped out a few moments later, and turned on a dime to face the direction it had come. Then it went back to warp and she let it go for a few minutes until they were well passed the Scott's last known location. And then she dropped them out, in the middle of the nebular.

Mattias was giggling now. "Damn, girl, if I didn't know any better, you were actually a Marine pilot!" He got up from his seat and moved to stand over her left shoulder, one hand on the back of her seat, the other on the console, right next to her hand, their fingers nearly touching. "You are certainly a woman of many skills, Phoenix Lalor." As he spoke, he marvelled at how the bright colors of the nebula outside the shuttle made her look even more beautiful, if that was even possible.

In a quieter tone he added, "One of them being, the natural ability to claim my heart."

She flushed and turned her attention to the console. "I was always in the flight simulators at the academy." she admitted. "Or in the Library, catching up."

Suddenly realizing the issue, Mattias features, and tone, turned softer, more caring. He slowly spun her seat to face him, then knelt down in front of her, so that her eys were higher than his. "Phee," he spoke softly as he took her hands in his, his hard calluses suddenly feeling soft as velvet. "Have you never been with a man before?" There was no judgment in his eyes or his voice, only warm tenderness.

She shook her head and looked out towards the nebular. "Mik'hai was to be my husband before Pallas killed him. I was always told not to think about it. When I got to Earth, I had a lot to think about, and learn and I did not even know about that sort of stuff." And she had found it hard to make connections because of it. "Oh I got asked to dinner. A few Admiral's sons who thought having a woman with my heritage on their arm would be a good thing. But those were just dinner."

Mattias nodded. He now understood her reaction to his kiss in the turbolift earlier. "Phee, I know I already apologized earlier. However, I had no idea of the scope of my actions. Were I able, I would gladly have made our first kiss much more romantic and special. I hope that you would do me the honor of allowing me to correct my error."

Phoenix looked at him. "Its ok, no one expects a 20 year old to be an innocent or inexperienced."

Reaching up with his right hand, he gently cupped the left side of her face. Then, slowly rising up, he leaned in and kissed her. While the kiss was not deep, there was no denying the passion and desire behind it.

Her response was tentative and shy, she didn't really know what she was doing.

Mattias continued their kiss, allowing Phoenix to dictate the speed that she was comfortable with. Readjusting the position of her right hand, he interlaced the fingers of his left hand with hers.

After a few minutes she gently pulled back, her cheeks red. Phoenix was struggling to understand the feelings the kiss evoked. She did not untangle their fingers as she drew back.

Looking into her silvery eyes, Mattias was a little out of breath. "Well, Phee, you certainly kiss very nicely." Still holding her right hand in his left, he used the side of his right index finger to tilt her chin towards him. "We will go as fast or as slow, and as far as you feel comfortable, okay?"

"okay." She said softly in reply with a shy smile. "we.. should get back."

Mattias shrugged slightly, a soft smile on his face. "Perhaps but, is there a rush? It's not often that two people are all alone in a beautiful nebula. We could stay and watch the stellar winds move the different colors about?" There was no pressure in his words, he simply did not want this perfect moment to end.

She gave a small shrug. "ok." She sat back in her chair.

Unlacing their fingers, Mattias stood and asked with a smile, "Would you like something to drink?"

"Water thanks" She said as she checked their status.

Nodding, Mattias moved over to the aft replicator, his back to Phoenix. Speaking to the computer, he said, "Two sparking Altair waters, chilled, please."

Phoenix checked their location. "There is a lot of dense gasses up ahead" she said over her shoulder.

Picking up the two glasses, Mattias started to turn back towards the bow when, suddenly, the shuttle vibrated slightly from space turbulence. "Anything you haven't trained for?"

"I completed the Academy. I was not trained in heavy weapons but i have my basic Phaser competency."

Handing one of the waters to Phoenix, Mattias replied softly. "While I will certainly help you with those, right now, I was referring to the dense gases up ahead."

"Oh I am trained for this." She said softly.

After Phoenix took her water, Mattias moved to the co-pilots seat. "In that case, Would you mind if this old warhorse takes the helm? I might even be able to dhow you a few new tricks."

"All yours" She waved a hand with a smile.

Grinning excitedly, Mattias transferred the helm to his station. Then, once he had control of the shuttle, he activated the sensors and looked for a path through the gas pockets. Finding one, he gave Phoenix a mischievous grin. "Hold on to your ass, Phee. We goin for a joy ride!"

He reached over and activated their emergency restraints then, once they were both secured to their seats, he lowered the internal gravity and then sent them into a steep nose dive. As they descended along their original z axis, Mattias sent them into a spiraling corkscrew.

Phoenix grinned, she was a speed freak at times, and this was fun.

A few hundred meters along their current path, Mattias forced the shuttle to suddenly flip ass over tea kettle and then, as the structural generators were screaming in protest, he shot them off hard to starboard.

Several minutes of high stress manoeuvres later, and he brought the shuttle back to a relative even heading, deeper into the nebula. Laughing aloud, he sat back and said, "Now that was fun, eh, Phee?" He looked over, only to see his beautiful companion soaked by the water that had been floating in the air after he lowered the gravity. "Oh shit!"

She blinked and wiped the water from her face. "Really?" she asked with look that promised retribution.

"Now, Phee," Mattias said as he released their restraints and locked the shuttle in a relative standstill. As he floated from his seat, he raised his hands in a defensive nature, all the while, trying not to grin or laugh too much. "It was just water, though, I must say that you do look very sexy wet."

She glanced down at her uniform. "I bet you loved the wet teeshirt run at the Academy." She pushed off into the Zero G.

Reaching out to grab the ceiling, Mattias smirked and giggled. "I might have, though, I never made it through the run without being soaked. Course, now, with further training, I have gotten better at dodging."

She rolled her eyes and headed for the replicator. "I need a towel." she muttered and did a somersault in the air as she did so.

What she hadn't counted on was when Mattias collided with her, wrapping her in a close embrace, twisting them to use his body as a bumper against the deck plating. They then hung there in zero g, his hands on her back and his eyes locked on hers. "I'm sorry for soaking you. Allow me to make it up to you?"

She raised an eyebrow at him, silvery blue eyes watching him carefully. "How?"

"Allow me to give you a night's enjoyment, starting with a fully drawn bath, with calming scents and music, then, a home cooked meal, made by my hands, followed by whatever you wish to do."

Phoenix studied him for a moment. Then she gently squirmed free in the Zero G. "Mattias..." She said softly as she did so. "How.." she took a breath. "dinner, in a public place will do."

Mattias didn't stop Phoenix from breaking free of his hold. He sighed to himself. He knew that he kept moving a little too fast but, whenever he looked into Phoenix's beautiful silver-blue eyes, he found that he couldn't help himself. If he wasn't careful, he'd turn her away from him. "I'm sorry, Phee."

"No, I am sorry, I keep forgetting how different things are, On Erisia, we would not be alone, and you would not be able to do anything but kiss my hand. My reactions are not what you expect, I am sorry if I am leading you on, Mattias."

Smiling warmly, Mattias reached out and gently took hold of Phoenix's right hand. "Then, I humbly ask for you to join me for dinner, my lady." He pulled her hand to his lips and gently kissed her knuckles.

Now she rolled her eyes and smiled. "When kind sir?"

Seeing her smile caused Mattias's heart to skip a beat. Returning her smile, he asked, "Would tomorrow night be too soon?"

Phoenix considered him carefully. "No tomorrow night sounds great." She replied with a small smile. She reached the replicator and replicated a towel as she spoke.

Grinning like a schoolboy, Mattias moved back to the controls. "Are you comfortable in zero g, or would you prefer going back to normal?"

"I am fine." she answered. "I was ok in Zero G training." The console chirped and she moved to it with a push off of the wall. She used the towel to dry her hair as she did so, untying it so it fell free.

When Mattias saw her beautiful long hair, floating free in zero g, his heart caught in his chest. With it still glistening from being soaked, it floated around her as if she were Eve of old. It made him think she was all the more perfect.

"Hmm might wanna strap in." Phoenix called to him. "Geothermal eddies and pockets of explosive gas ahead"

Mattias shook himself out of the daydream. "Huh? Oh! Yeah!" He kicked off the aft bulkhead and was about to pull himself into his seat, when the shuttle was rocked by an explosion off the port aft quarter. The resulting sudden changecin positioning of the shuttle had Nattias yanked forward and slammed his face into the overhead console. Suddenly, all but energency power went out on the shuttle.

Phoenix cursed and managed to strap in as she fought for control of the shuttle. She brought it under control, restored gravity and brought them to a halt before unstrapping and moving to check on Mattias.

As gravity regained its claim on Mattias's unconcious form, he fell to the deck, the impact jarring him awake. His face was a mess. Nose broken, black eyes already forming, top lip slip and two broken teeth. "Owwww..." he groaned. "Did you...get the number of that Birdof prey that just landed on my face?"

"Nope" She quipped and looked around. She found the medkit and opened it. She found a painkiller and pressed it to his neck. "Here. I will jump us back to the Montgomery Scott." She placed the towel under his nose. "Hold that there."

He hissed in pain but held tbe towel in place where she had put it. As he breathed through his mouth, he could taste the sweetness of the products that she used in her hair. It helped to distract him from the pain.

swiftly she moved back to the controls and hit the comm "Clyde Heavy One to Montgomery Scott. Medical Emergency inbound. ETA 2 minutes." She put the course in and hit the warp button as the comm replied with an affirmative.

[Clyde Heavy One please elaborate on the medical emergency."]

"We lost gravity, Captain Richardson was flung into a console." She replied. "Injuries to the face."

[Acknowledge Clyde Heavy One. Medical team standing by.]

Phoenix concentrated on her piloting and brought the craft out of warp right behind the Scott. She braked and brought it into the shuttle bay without hesitation as soon as she got the green light from landing control. Clyde Heavy One landed gracefully with a soft, feather light touch down in the marine hanger. As soon as it touched down, Phoenix released the hatch and her seat straps.

The hatch descended and feet pounded up the ramp and into the cabin.
